Greetings from Sydney, Australia.

I am having problems with the remote unit that controls the alarm/central
door-locking. When I press the button nothing happens.

What I would like to know is whether the remote unit simply needs a battery
or it is a sealed unit. There does not seem to be any way to lever the thing
open. I don't want to force it open and further damage something!

The car is an Australian 1999 Camry Conquest. The alarm is the factory alarm
that came with the car. One press of the button on the remote unit arms the
alarm and locks all the doors. Another press of the button switches off the
alarm and unlocks all doors. The remote unit is black, rectangular in shape
and has one grey button on it. The second remote unit that my wife carries
with her around works fine.

Thanking you all in advance for your help.

Cheers,
Nick

Sounds like the battery is run down. It will open, right below the area
where the alarm/control hooks onto your key chain. You can pry it open with
a very small screw driver. Our old one took small round batteries for each
control.
