Greetings Furries!

Just letting you know that while I was at ConFurence 12, Kevin
Duane(owner of Digital Impudendum) paid me the $120 due to me for my
work in "Animal Magnetism IV". In addition he also gave me a copy of
the new Taral Wayne compilation "Off-Color" and a copy of "Cat
Scratches" for my personal pleasure.

My patience has paid off, and so has Kevin :)

Sincerely,
Michael Angel Peña(AKA Sparrow...A Rabbit)

I'd like to add, since this is on topic, that at Conifur last year, Kevin
settled, in full, for my work in "Stripe Tease" and "Hare Trigger". My
thanks.

Patience is a virtue which can pay dividends.

Well, I do hope that you're both happy, then. :x)

I hope though Kevin will pay Fernado soon.

As we speak...

I should point out, there may have been a different understanding in the
past. Fernando may have been thinking of using the money to come to the U.S.
for a furry con, and may have been hoping to make enough through Kevin Duane
that Kevin would be purchasing his plane ticket.

That may now be in negotiation on other fronts, so the money in question is
now being designated for other purchases. The issue should be completed very
soon.

As someone new to the furry scene, I had not reailized that there was
a problem with the artists of these CDs getting paid.

I am very glad to hear that the problem is being resolved, since I'd
now feel very guilty having bought the CDs in question not knowing the
situation.

Would Kevin be the person who runs the furry dealer room at the Arisia
con in Boston every year? I know the person I'm thinking of is
usually the only dealer with furry stuff at Arisia. Mostly a
curiosity question.

Actually, the fact that you DID buy one is what ensures that the artists
were paid... Consider what I stated earlier about independant comics (and
many other forms of publications that pay artists only after publication),
that many of them are unable to pay their artists until after the comics,
etc, make enough to cover publication, distribution, etc... In other words,
the artists get a portion of the profit... A comic or disk that pays all
it's artists in advance cannot afford to go to press afterwards (unless it's
one of the mainstream comics/magazine publishers in question)...

I've got news for you-- the mainstream comics pay after publication as well.
The artists may get an advance, depending on their level of popularity or
depending on the title they're involved with (which is then taken out of the
after-publication royalties), but the days of paying artists in advance for
artwork are long dead.

Of course, there are a lot of comic companies that now work on the music
industry model for paying people as well-- you get a certain amount of
royalties after publication, but the "expenses" of producing, advertising, etc
the book are taken out of the royalties. That's why the Image creator-owned
plan is a little weird- friends of mine who worked there have told me how they
had to pay from their royalties to have everything done from advertising in
Previews to having the Image production guys assemble the book. Then there was
the mysterious "office fee". And with some companies, "creator-owned" doesn't
really mean the creator has the rights. Witness the Reality Check situation....

Thanks Elin, I was hoping you'd chime in to corroborate my claims (and
correct any errors)... Maybe independant comics
publishers/writers/illustrators should write a book on the subject... I
mean, there's some that cover the craft, others that cover the history, but
little (that I know of) that cover subjects like 'So you want to publish
comics'... Something that improves the chances of the small/independant
publisher's chance at success, as well as something that prevents another
independant comics crash similar to what happened in the late 80's...:)

The fellow who has the furry stuff at the last few Arisias was not Mr.
Duane.
He did have some of his CDs for sale, and the fench in that room does get
strong at times, but that can be attributed to some of the customers, not the
proprietor. He does have the habit of running on the room TV a non-stop
video show, which contributes to the crowding.
