Buy an AMD XP for my K7S5A or a Thunderbird?

I have read been reading this newsgroup for a little while and have
noticed that there "appears" to be a problem with AMD Thunderbird
processors in the 1.4ghz range when used in conjuction with an ECS
K7S5A board. Some posts indicate that slower Thunderbirds will work
fine.(in the 1ghz range)

I am ready to assemble my system and all that's left to purchase is
the processor but I'm stumped. (BTW, money IS an issue) If it weren't
then I would go ahead and buy an AMD XP 1600+, 1700+, or 1800+ and be
done with it.

My question is this... Given that ECS boards *appear* to have a
problem with Thunderbird cpu's in the 1.4ghz range should I buy a
1.2ghz or "play it safe" and buy a 1ghz Thunderbird? My current system
now consists of an AMD 850
Duron and this is my first step up to a Thunderbird cpu. Given my
proposed use of this system (listed below) is there a "perceivable"
difference in performance between a 1.4 and a 1.2 Thunderbird? I am
guessing that there is not but I would like to hear other opinions
from this group.

My goal is to end up with a stable system and not the fastest one on
the block.

Thank you in advance for any input! It is much appreciated!

My setup consists of:

Processor: unknown
ECS K7S5A (BIOS not known yet, # 4 sticker near the PCI slots)
256mb of 2100 DDR by Crucial
20gb IBM 7200rpm drive
Acer 4x6x32 RW drive
Toshiba 16x DVD drive
Enlight 7237 case with 300watt power supply

Proposed use:
Gaming is not important to me
Surfing and some photo editing (nothing demanding)
Watching DVD's
Overclocking is not an issue (or I would not have bought this board)

I'm running a 1.4GHz Thunderbird with one of my K7S5A boards with NO
problems.

Please remember that most of the posts here are from people with
problems, don't forget about the tens of thousands of people running
this board without problems.

I've also got an XP 1500+ and so far the 1.4GHz Thunderbird seems faster
in games and benchmarks. Depending on the price, you may want to go with
an XP.

go to www.ocworkbench.com

click on form ...then go to the ECS form...you can read from thousands of
post of people with this motherboard

I got 3 of them....one runs at 1 gig...no problems....the other 2 with 1.4
gig Athlons....alot of problems...have had to slow the FSB to 124.....and
then there is the cold boot problem....

actually one of the 2 works fine with an 1600+XP Athlon....It died during a
reflash of the bios....got a new bios chip from badflash.com and it has
worked perfect since then

What are you useing to clock it to 142? My 1500+ will run 150 but I get
explorer errers in windows. I havn't volted it because I didn't know how to
do the XP.

if you're running DDR set memory to Normal, 2.5, 7, 4.

This has worked for me with my XP1500 at 10x150.

the newer revisions of the board have the resistance change as directed by
AMD from 40 to 56 Ohm. 1.4 GHz 266C's cause alot of trouble. Go with an
XP..... or anything other than the original 1.4
