As far as I know, Javascript is not a trademark of Netscape, and I know
for a fact that Javascript is not a trademark of Sun. "Java" and not
"Javascript" is a Sun trademark. There's a difference between, Java and
Javascript. One (Javascript) is a scripting language for the web and
the other (Java) is a programming language like C ++, Visual Basic, etc.
I forward this question to Clayton Lewis, the JavaScript
Development Manager. This is the response he sent Ceri (and
cc'd me).

Ceri,
Alas, the regular expression Java* and all its instances are trademarks of Sun. The fact that Sun took
the trademark at the time Netscape began the implementation has always been an interesting contradiction
shared by the two companies. Here's the wording that will go into future releases of the browser to
clarify:
Contains JavaScript™ software technology invented and implemented by Netscape Communications
Corporation. Copyright (c) 1994-1998 Netscape Communications Corporation. The JavaScript name
is a trademark or registered trademark of Sun Microsystems, Inc. in the United States and other
countries and is used under license

Opinions are my own. Any similarity to those of
Netscape Communications is purely coincidental.
Not quite a documentation just legalese:
