How does the 'rank' field in Index Server work? It seems to return an
enormous range of numbers when all I want is a percentage.

it ranges from 0-1000.

Ranking is a difficult concept to grasp.

The way it works is to recognize that certain words are
used more frequently than others. Give me, that's mine,
get lost, shut up. Other words are used rarely - thank
you, please, your welcome. The great mass of words are
used an average amount.

What this means is that the words that are used rarely
have more resolving power in finding what you are looking
for than words that are used very frequently. For
instance if you were looking for John Smith in the
Manhattan phone book, you would have a tough time finding
the John Smith you are looking for, as the Manhattan phone
book has 12 pages of John Smith (guessing). However if
you are looking for a Aloysha Karamazov, which is a
relatively rare name, chances are if you found this entry
in the Manhattan phone book - this would be the Aloysha
Karamazov you are looking for.

The point is the more rare a word the greater its
resolving power. The more frequent a word the less its
resolving power.

What rank does is measure the occurence of your search
phrase against the number of times the word/phrase appears
in your document and the total number of documents that
are indexed. Frequently occuring words - for
instance 'the' are considered to be noise and not helpful
in coming up with rank. Less frequently occuring words
are considered to have higher resolving power and are
ranked higher.

Is there a way to lower this to 100 from 1000, or do you know of another way
to display rank of only 1-100 ?

divide by 10. You are stuck with the ranking expressed in terms of 1000.
