Not too sure but you may be being getting Log Spamming. By spoofing
the referrer, their site starts to show in your logs, it gets your
interest and you visit their site. Probably more effective than email
spamming !!

...and along those lines the thinking is apparently that alot of
webstats stuff is unprotected and gobbled up by search engine
crawlers, so extra links boost pagerank.

Either way its dodgy :)

I've seen the same with some cheap hosting company - hostitcheap.com? -
which I think is probably more dangerous as they're obviosly trying to steal
business.
