Hello all-

I was curious about the latest fad in skates, namely the ones with the wheels
inline to replace blades- In other words, I was wondering if any of you out
there have Ultra-Lite (tm), Bauer RoadRollers (tm), or Zetra Rollerblade (r)
brand of these type of skates. Do they (1) Reasonably simulate ice skating?
and (2) Hold-up well after lots of use?

I'm trying to find out if they'd be worth buying... Thanks muchly.

I received a pair for Christmas (I don't recall the brand name) but
have only been able to get out skating a few times. They do a
fairly good job of simulating ice skating if you can find a relatively
flat surface to skate on (such as an outdoor basketball court).
Stopping is completely different (can't snow anyone :-) -- usually I stop
by just turning.

The "blades" can be a little tight at first, but after a few uses will
glide smoothly. IMHO, they are worth the investment if you can't get
to a real ice rink.

These funny roller skates have been around for years. They've never been
terribly popular in these parts, but they exist.

NHL TIDBITS 2/25/90

All the teams in the Patrick division have been in first or tied for first
this season.

Last Monday, St. Louis rookie goaltender Curtis Joseph was named NHL player
of the week for Feb 12-18. This week he's allowed 15 goals in two games,
both losses.

Calgary tied its single-game team record for goals when they beat Toronto
Thursday night 12-2. The record was originally set when the team was based
in Atlanta. In that game, March 21, 1975, they beat the Vancouver Canucks 12-4.

Q: How many Nordiques does it take to change a tire?
A: One, but they'll all be there if it's a blowout.

Chicao is the only team that has not lost a game it led after two periods

About the Adams division: What is the earliest an entire division has
clinched? Also, as I had asked earlier, what is the earliest a single
team has clinched. It looks like the Patrick will be the opposite - I
think it would be 'neat' to see 4 teams up for the last two spots in the
playoffs, and it seems very possible right now. Thanks for any
responses..Caleb

Did you hear that Nordique coach Michel Bergeron is now dressing only 10
players per game? The rest of the players are now able to dress themselves.

[Toronto Star, I think]

Not too much, since you can't do ANY sideways sliding,
stopping, etc... I find it's closer to XC ski-skating, but the basic
motions for power skating are there.

>and (2) Hold-up well after lots of use?

That'll depend on the kind of terrain, the amount of use,
etc. (generic caveats). However, they're pretty sturdy, and you can
get replacement wheels for about $15 a set. The thing to watch for
is the bearings, since they can get ruined if you skate through
puddles or grit.

>I'm trying to find out if they'd be worth buying... Thanks muchly.

I really enjoy mine, even if they're not a perfect simulation of
ice skating. It's a great workout, using the same muscles you'd
use for skating. I don't know what it's like in Rochester, but
that's the closest you'll ever get to skating or skiing (I usually
go to the park in the moring with my XC ski poles) in non-winter
sports areas of the world (New Brunswick, NJ). Buy them!
One more thing: You don't need to get the expensive brand-name
RollerBlades, since you can get a very decent pair for half the price at
Sears! Good Luck!

I just upgraded my younger son's rollerblades by doing the following.
We have three sets in our house. The original two sets were Bauer
RollerBlades with moulded boots. The price about two years ago was
$125 per pair. Tim, the younger, outgrew his pair with three wheels
and graduated to Joey's pair with four wheels. Joey got a new set of
Bauers also with moulded boots at $175. Around Christmas I was in the
basement of Cosby's in Forrestal Village (North of Princeton on RTE 1 in NJ)
and bought a pair of unused five to ten year old CCM Tacks in Tim's
size for $25. Then I went home and pulled the blades off the CCMs
and the boots off the three-wheel RollerBlades. Back to Cosby's where
Chris, the Manager, mounted the roller frames on the CCM boots for
$10 per boot. I replaced the wheels with some $41/set green fluorescent
ones for flash and reconditioned the bearings with a soak in carb. cleaner
(Oh for an ultrasonic cleaner!) followed by a soak and drain in 30 wt.
Total investment $86 and Tim has real leather boots as well. One
happy boy.

As for the usefulness of RollerBlades as a training mechanism. The
boots are significantly heavier than regular ice skates. Tim spends
about 2 to 3 hours per afternoon in our driveway working on his skating
and shooting (38 goals and 22 assists in 24 games). The hockey schools
recommend bringing Roller Blades for off-ice recreation.

Another tidbit. Chris (above) told me that he was at a west-coast
trade show a few weeks ago where he saw demonstrated a set of hockey
boots with detachable blades. Yes, there was also a RollerBlade
attachment. He said that the manufacturer claimed that Patty LaFontaine
had a set and used them. I doubt that he has done so in a game yet.
