Should prove interesting. A programmar friend and I were just talking about
Flash MX and its goal of becoming a web interface for advanced applications.
While we both liked the idea on some levels, we are most worried about its
partially closed nature.

That's a horribly written press release. Lot's of Macromedia buzzwords, hype
and spin. Macromedia needs to stop trying to communicate with the public and
hire someone to do that for them, because they just don't get it.

They are not yet using Nielsen to help them, they are using Nielsen as a
shield. That they would actually consider any of Nielsen's advice is lip
service. This is the worst "PR team-up" since Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie
Presley.

I look forward to reading Nielsen's press release, and I look forward to the
inevitable divorce.

Macromedia has a God awful public relation.

For instance they've never came up with a valid argument that why the Flash
player for Mac OS is not really optimized for the PPC Architecture. All I
could find on the net was bunch of myth that people have made up with no
real knowledge backup, and when I asked Macromedia Directly they've sent me
a link to the Flash Player so I can download it !!!!!!!!

Would that be due to the lack of knowledge back bone in their company, I
hope not I really like the concept of Flash myself.

Evidently they still don't 'get it'. Standardized interface components?
Like any designer worth their salt would be caught using standardized
interface components? [sarcasm]

Other than that, it's the same old Macromedia "if we repeat it often
enough we'll start believing it" mumbo jumbo.

http://www.useit.com/ has its comments on the front, talk about a bad press
release, he comes across as a prick. There isn't any reason you should doubt
macromedia looking to improve flash usability. Its not lip service. One of
Flash MX's big deals is that it addresses several old complaints regarding
its usability as well as its value as a design tool. Even includes many
enhancements for disabled in regards to accessibility.

Jakob won't divorce Macromedia, he likes money and press too much. Its a
smart move for both of them. Macromedia will further address its weakest
areas (and gain good press), Jakob will establish mind share in web
designers. Something he's had trouble with in the past. He'll have his
fingers in the documentation of the software and the education of designers,
as well as a say in how the product behaves and how the default templates
for common form items are used.

As far as listening to users and designer/developers, are you aware of

Then Macromedia has also been listening to the standards body with its
latest Dreamweaver release, featuring MUCH easier ways to write valid code
(xhtml, CSS, etc), as well as aid in designing with accessibility in mind

Complain when they ignore the problems, but to complain when they do their
best to address them and as sage Mr. T put it "I Pity the Foo".
