I was just browsing the short-wave band tonight on a Zenith 8S643 that I
fixed up. I haven't really paid any attention to short-wave in the past,
as I mostly fixed up standard broadcast band sets. A program caught my ear
and I was wondering what it might be. It was just above the '7' mark on the
dial, but not quite to the halfway point between '7' and '8'. The
reception was good with just the wavemagnet antenna here in upstate New York
state. I caught the broadcast around 6:40pm NY time. It seemed to be a
collage of old radio jingles and outtakes along with loops of music. Anyone
know what I am listening to and where it's coming from?

Jon---You may have better luck asking over at the rec.radio.shortwave group,
they keep an "ear" on the SW programming.

When you find an answer, let us know. Sounds like it may be of interest to
some of us.

Sounds like one of the shows on WBCQ - The Planet -- all the way from
Maine. It's a leased-access station owned by Alan Weiner (of off shore
pirate Radio New York/Radio Sarah fame).

Do a google search on WBCQ.

Actually, I got an IM from someone identifying it as WBCQ. I did a MSN
search and found them at this web site:
http://www.complexvariablesstudio.com/ Looks like a pretty eclectic lineup,
but I'm enjoying the lost discs program that was just on.

Sure are - but I wish there were some captions to explain what we're
seeing. I miss the old AM rigs. In 1999 or 2000, I was working on the old
Gates 5kw transmitter of WENE-AM in Endicott, NY that had been installed in
1949, when the wires leading to the plate transformer arced and started a
fire. Knowing that the rig was full of PCB laden caps and transformers, I
hit the master disconnect, called 911 and ran! That transmitter took up
quite a bit of floor space spread out across 5 cabinets (3 for the
transmitter, 2 for the 5 tower phasor). Boy it sure sounded sweet though!
It was on the air while the 70's vintage Continental was under the weather.
Now the big beast is gone and a little solid state BE transmitter, about the
size of a typical home refrigerator sits there. I have a picture of the
transmitter on my radio station tribute website, along with some other
vintage radio station pictures. (http://www.binghamtonradio.com for anyone
interested).
It's fun being on both sides of the hobby/business. I get to play with
vintage radios and transmitters!

Jon, have you ever listened to the programs on BBC 2?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio2_promo.shtml

Great music for your old radios....Malcolm Laycock's weekly
dance/swing program from the 20's and 30's is posted on
alt.binaries.sounds.78rpm-era each week by someone in 4 sections in
MP3.

The fidelity isn't fantastic, but is more than great for AM radios.
BBC has an amazing UNSCRATCHED collection of era music.

Desmond Carrington, Big Band Special, David Jacobs are also great.

I'm using a product called Total Recorder from
http://www.HighCriteria.com which is $30. Total Recorder sits between
the computer and its soundcard as a proxy engine. ANY wav coming out
of the soundcard OR, more importantly, any wav going INTO the
soundcard for play, can be diverted by Total Recorder onto a disk file
in several formats. Total Recorder does a fantastic job of taking
streaming programs right off the net, compressing the data into an MP3
at whatever speed blows your dress up, and stores it on the disk. The
new version can even break up a huge program into several files at X
minutes, never missing a note....all on the fly as the stream plays
from any program. It'll steal the soundtrack off an encrypted DVD as
clear as the DVD is playing it because it's all done in DATA, not
analog. Way cool product to get around the no-recording
products....(c;

Archos Studio 20 MP3 player with 20GB built in hard drive is my MP3
player of choice. There's even a hacker group of open source Swedes
who have their own firmware to run on it! http://rockbox.haxx.se is
where it can be downloaded for free....with instructions. My Archos
has a 40GB hard drive I installed in it. At 128Kbps MP3 it will store
about 1400 CDs full.....all in a box in your pocket....or hidden in
the battery compartment of my Motorola 41D portable radio...(c;

WDIX in Dixie's Gates 5KW beast is buried under Prince of Orange Mall
in Orangeburg, SC. The building caught fire and when the wooden floor
burned, the old Gates fell into the basement. The station went dark
forever, the tow tower array on 1150 destroyed by bulldozers as they
buried the whole station under the parking lot.

Some of the locals say they can still hear the most popular radio
personality Pa Johnson and his radio dog, both now dead, if you stand
over where the Gates is buried in the parking lot in Pa's early
morning slot still doing his personal, live, expensive spots telling
Orangeburg what a great breakfast he had at some sponsor's restaurant,
or had his car fixed at some sponsor's car repair shop on Broughton
Street, "across from....".

Pa used to have a red light bulb duct taped to the mic in front of
him. The station owner got tired of him going on for 5 minutes about
one of his sponsors who only bought a 30 second spot. The bulb was
hooked through a timer relay set to 60 seconds that was set when the
mic opened. When the red light came on, it was time for Pa to talk
about something else....(c;

When his dog died of old age, the entire city went into mourning for
over a month. The dog was his only "guest" at 6AM....and everyone in
town knew that dog by sight on the streets because Pa was never
without her.

THAT's the power of radio, now lost forever.

You beat me to it. Not only would that be my first guess, I am certain
that was the station to which he was listening.

There are various WBCQ links, but the one you provided is the one that
is up-to-date.
