| Hi!
| I'm looking for access numbers for internet access in the Bahamas. ??
| Thanks! Ross
|

Ross,
try going to http://oi.net/information/index.htm
it is the information page for the Abacos, and there are links for internet
access. I haven't followed the links, because when I went, I wanted NO
contact with the outside.

Ross, maybe this will help a bit?

Email in the Abacos:
More and more cruisers these days are relying on their computers,
email, and the Internet to stay in touch. The folks in the Abacos are
already hip to this and have had email service into and out of the Abacos
available for some time now.
Every morning on the VHF, the Cruiser’s Net offers email announcements
and where to pick up and send email from the Abacos. Check with the net for
the latest word on email, but for now, as of this writing several places
throughout the Hub of Abaco offer email services. The folks that offer
these services ask that you follow a few simple guidelines. Please refrain
from frivolous and/or lengthy messages and NO attachments please.
In Marsh Harbour, Sapodilly’s Bar and Grill will send and receive email
for you. To receive email via Sapodilly’s have the email addressed to
sapo...@oii.net and put your boat’s name in the subject field. Incoming
email is posted on the bulletin board by the bar on the deck.
Over on Man-O-War Cay, Man-O-War Marina has now taken over the job of
forwarding e-mail to cruisers that may not be in Marsh Harbour. To receive
your email via Man-O-War Marina have it addressed to crui...@oii.net with
the boat’s name in the subject field. Man-O-War Marina will announce any
mail they are holding during the “Announcements” portion of the Cruisers Net
immediately following the weather. Man-O-War Marina has a strong signal and
they are sometimes heard as far north as Allans-Pensacola and beyond. If
you miss the morning Cruisers Net you can still check on your email by
calling Man-O-War Marina on VHF ch.16.
In Hope Town, Club Soleil offers email service. Have your maid
addressed to crui...@clubsoleil.com with your boat’s name in the subject
field.
For Northern Abaco, Fox Town Texaco and the Tangelo Hotel have
volunteered to broadcast the weather and announce waiting email each morning
on the VHF.
For those cruisers who wish to send their own email, there are several
possibilities. You can take your laptop into the local Batelco office and
make arrangements to use their phone lines for your own Internet access.
Some Batelco offices do not provide this service so you’ll have to check
first. Several businesses allow the use of their phone lines for email
access; The Conch Inn Marina in Marsh Harbour will allow their guests to
hook into their phone lines for Internet service. Be sure to bring with you
a phone line with a standard RJ11 connector.
Acoustic couplers are popular items with some cruisers. These allow
you to hook up your computer directly to any pay phone in the Bahamas to
access the net. The only problem you might run into is that the ambient
noise can be a factor in making and maintaining a connection. There’s a
nifty little item out now called Pocketmail, a self-contained portable
e-mail device. These are very popular with boaters who don't have computers
or Internet access. They range in price from $99 to $199 and the service
itself is $9.99 per month.
Be advised that there are no 800 numbers in Abaco for stateside service
providers in The Bahamas. All calls to AOL, CompuServe, Prodigy and other
ISP’s have to be made as an international long distance call. The costs are
approximately $1 a minute direct dial calls and $3-$7 a minute for credit
card or operator assisted calls. AOL and CompuServe uses can now check
their email through any Internet connection directly from the
http://www.aol.com website using Netscape or IE. Even for subscribers of
other ISP’s there is not longer any need to configure an email program
(Outlook Express, Netscape Mail, Eudora, etc.) to check your email account.
Yahooo, Hotmail and others now let you get mail from your “POP” account
using your browser.
If you want to access the Internet directly here on Abaco, you have to
deal with BatelNet, the only Internet service provider on Abaco with local
phone number access. You can visit BatelNet’s website:
http://www.batelnet.bs/.
There is a new ISP coming to Abaco, the Internet service of 100JAMZ, an
FM station with studios in Nassau. 100JAMZ has a remote transmitter in
Marsh Harbour that uses a satellite bounce to connect their studio with the
Abaco transmitter. 100JAMZ is also licensed to serve the internet in the
Bahamas and this service should be available by mid-1999. Short-term
visitors wanting Internet access may purchase a Net Card for $25 for 8 hours
of Internet access. These cards are to be available at shops and marinas
all over Abaco. This service will be available as a local phone call from
anywhere on Abaco.
If you need computer supplies, repairs, or if you’re simply having
trouble accessing your account, see the folks at Abacom, Ltd., the owners of
oii.net. They’re located in downtown Marsh Harbour and their phone number is
242-367-3475 and their webmaster can be reached in Treasure Cay at
242-365-8800.
