There was a thread going a while ago about how long RMD has been here.
Here's a new twist: how long have *you* been here?

I'll start:
I first found out about RMD about 5 or 6 years ago, when I got my first
Internet account. I didn't start reading and posting regularly until about a
year and a half ago.

I have been around almost 2 years now. I started lurking and didn't post
much until maybe a year ago. I have been a lot more active since I got my
WR250 and have met several RMD'ers already (High Lord Gomer, Scott Wilson
(the other one in SC), Lee, MX Tuner and soon to meet Freddie (that scares
me).

All the RMD'ers I met have been great. Gomer helped me with a flat about
two weeks ago and Tuner has helped me with various questions via e-mail.

All in all the majority of the people who post to RMD are cool. I pick out
certain posts by those that I have met and others Mike Baxter, Uwe, Rich
Rohrich, Peter Patton, SER, Ghost Rider just to name a few.

I have seen the group decline a little and noticed some people leave and
posts fluctuate in number. However, the core of the group moderates itself
very, very well.

Been lurking for about 7 years. Found it in the days when there would
only be 10-20 new posts a day.

A year and a half now, though I tend to lurk until a thread about ATVs is
posted.
I've learned much from this ng, as well as gotten some good tips from
questions I've posted.

Well, I'm an old timer when it comes to RMD. Before RMD came about, all we had
was rec.motorcycles. That was OK, but the traffic made it difficult to keep
with all the post on the Unix system at Texas Instruments. No threading
software then. So all of the motorcyclist shared this group until someone
called a vote to start some sub groups. The vote passed and RMD was born along
with r.m.racing and r.m.harley. What most of you guys don't realize is that
you missed the adventures of George Couyant. Those were the days!!!

I remember when there was only rec.motorcycles. My first time on line
was about the mid 80's. Back then it was pretty much just academic and
large company access. I remember the discussions that ensued when the
proposal for a rec.motorcycles.dirt was made. When the group was first
formed I joined, but I was more into street bikes so I unsubscribed and
forgot about it. I hooked back up again about the time I took my '85
CR125R out of mothballs which was a few years back. I was amazed at the
difference and happy to see that R.M.D. had survived and prospered into
what it is today.

Started lurking about a year and a half ago. Been annoying people with my
lack of knowledge for about a year. Have learned a ton in a very short time &
have met (online) lots of VERY cool people. Can't wait to meet some RMDers
face to face....July 5th meeting Jason Clishe, John Payer...and Kim, and Rob
Schafer. Probably just long enough for them to tell me what an a**hole I
really am <VBG>

Yea, it was a waste of time to check your news more than once a day,
little traffic back then. There was only 3-4 threads at a time, but still
quality stuff. I have appeared and disappeared many times through out
the last 8 years, usually depending on how new my bike was!

I was around when there was just rec.motorcycles. Mostly at
that time there seemed to be more posts about street bikes and
riding the canyon roads in Cailfornia. I myself had a 83 GPZ750
which I managed to wad up several times. At that time I was riding
KTMS, a '81 KTM250WR and a 83 KTM420WR. Mike Baxter was one of
the first dirt guys I became familar with as he seemed to break
bones alot. I remember when he broke his neck. I think I was
running Hell Hole MX Raceway at that time. ANd I do remember
George! Good grief!..This guy was a hoot! Some of the stories.
Makes ours today look boring.

Uh... a couple years and a half ago, first whilst riding a DramCycle and living
in a dream world? Before the XR400 - it was around the time of the Great
Horned One and Orange Pumps, back when TMaxel posted and raced and posted and
his kids raced and he posted, after George and during BonusSock, after Atlanta
and before the icy Spodefest Norwest, before I ever "raced" an enduro, right
around the birth of the Yellow Turd...

involves old CR500's, NY riding, and stupid questions...(just kidding about the

I started after living in DFW for a year and finally getting enough time away

Just checked DejaNews. My first post was in 1997/09/09

I used to be pretty busy on Compuserve in the Borland C++ forums. The usenet
C++ groups had too much crap for my taste. But RMD has just the right amount

Discovered RMD 3 or 4 years ago, but the system I was using made it a
real pain to access, so I quit lurking. Changed jobs, and have been
checking posts daily for maybe a year. I rarely post; I generally don't
have a lot to say. It's fun to read everyone's opinions on various
things, though. In general it's a pretty classy bunch.

I has been interesting to me to read threads by people who obviously
know each other well; it's amazing how you can get a feel for people's
personalities. I have not met any RMD'ers in person yet.

Great idea, Jason!

I have always been here. Before I got a computer I was here. I was
here the first time any of you watched while the posts were downloaded
for this newsgroup. I was there the first time you read that post that
hit home so much that you began sobbing uncontrollably. I was there
when we found out our good friends got injured--staring at the screen
in disbelief. You were all here when I bought my dream cycle. I was
there when you bought yours. I was there, man!

The internet connection we have is only symbolic of the real eternal
bond we all share. A simple electronic toy. Maybe its real value is to
underline this point. It is especially obvious with this common
interest that we are as one! In our hearts and souls we know each
other all too well. Are we really separate? What are we really doing
when we compete against each other at times? Is this insanity? For
some, maybe. For others, just an excuse to get out and ride with their
brothers. These technological terrors we ride are nothing compared to
the power of the eternal soul--our connection to God or spirit or
whatever you want to call it!! Our connection to each other! Time and
space are nothing to this--like the feathers filling a pillow of God's
own dreams!

We must listen to our souls sweet harmonies, see with the inner light
the things God would have us see. Unsheath the sword of truth bound in
the stone of our blindness. That is the mighty aspiration God has for
each of us. See that all beauty and meaning comes from oneness.
Realize truly that your fellow man is as important to you as any
family member--as important as yourself! fear is one end of a
continuum, and faith is on the other end. Oh, the unspeakable power
and beauty of it! That's how long I have been here!

Other than that, in earth time, I have been on this group just over a
year--right after I bought this new computer with an adequate modem
(my last computer was a 386SX, but I did like the "SX" part!).

You guys are all great--I have enjoyed it immensely and look forward
to more of the same, and more of the different perhaps too! Thanks!

It seems like I've been on here for ages, at least to me. I checked

not as far back as I thought.
I really miss some parts of the old RMD but change is to be expected.

Well, maybe not quite always, but I was branded a "proponent" in the flame

well, i'm a complete newbie. just found it about 3 weeks ago. been
riding for a few years but couldn't really find a decent source of
information/conversation untill rmd. very nice ng for sure.
unfortunately, i'm trying to find a cheap used bike (read older than
dirt) for a friend of mine who wants to learn how to ride so i've been
forced to post a lot of "knowledge withdrawal" type questions right off
the bat.

gotten really usefull responses (along with some subtle suggestions
that my riding habits resemble a lot of peoples wives - ex. "yeah thats
a thing you could do to your bike, i did it for my wife's bike and it
worked fine") oh well, i like a thinly veiled insult as much as the
next guy so keep it coming.

anyway, i'll try not to get to needy with my questions.

I looked through that today and the moderated version seemed pretty decent. I
was trying to find ways to improve std::string performance in large std::map.
800,000 plus records of 200+ length. The profiler pegs at the operator< used
for traversing.

Now that C++ has evolved into a standard and me having used it for the last 6
years, there isn't as much to learn about it and most of the groups get
repetitive. Too many kids wanting you to do their homework.<g>

I am a full time carpenter with extremely rough hands (ask my wife) and a
bad back from constently bending over.
After baking in the sun all day, all week , its tough to go racing in the
sun all day (but worth it).
Any falls that leave wounds on the hands, ankles, knees, back and arms make
Monday a little tough to deal with.
Sometimes it's hard to get the pants done up over the beer gut, cause you
can't pound nails without pounding ales.

But I have great grip strength! (from work??)

Here's a thought.... Stay in your air conditioned office and exersize!
I'm sure your wife loves your baby soft hands.

Ditto on the soft hands, but I keep a hand exercizer next to the
keyboard and use it while compiles run. Since alot of of my compiles
run 15- 60 sec and I do about a zillion compiles a day the old grip is
pretty good. It helps that I let the compiler find all my syntax
errors.

This may sound far-fetched, but it is a well known fact that the color
of your grips plays a big role in blister formation. If I were to
hazard a guess, I would say that you have black grips. Black is a
brutish, harsh, masculine color. Black grips are usually formulated
from a mixture of spent ammo and recycled monster truck tires. Black
grip riders usually secure the grips to the bike with a combination of
fish hooks, barbed wire, and razor blades.

Try switching to grips that are a quiet pastel, polite earthtone, or, if
you feel like making a statement, a bold neon color. Glue them on with
an environmentally friendly adhesive, such as a mixture of flour &
water. For maximum effect, repaint & anodize parts of your bike to
match your kinder, gentler grips. Become a Sensitive New Age Rider.

Take care now.

I have two carpenters that work for me that spend their freetime riding
bulls. I don't know about staying in shape, but one
downside is if they get injured bull riding and can't work, they
don't get paid.

My office job can still be performed if I can speak, hear, see and type [with
at least one hand]. Last Spring I had to
business from my hospital bed after crushing my fermal artery
on the handle bars while trying to dismount in fifth gear. I
now have a 2" section of Dacron in my leg to connect the
two ends of the artery.

Hey now,

Just cause we engineers didn't actually make it down out of "the tree"until
quite recently, doesn't mean we are an easy target. ~:-) Its occasionally
useful to tell people that one of the prime constituents of chocolate is
'dirt', and more specifically, clay.

Some of us *actually* think we know the caramilk secret. Hanging car stunts
aren't as easy as they look. 5 man concrete toboggans that do 60km/hr are
way cool, especially the ones that can stop in less than 5 ft! No joke. I
wouldn't ride it - got the Mechy's to pilot the thing. Heh heh! I should

Thanks Gary, but I hated it!
When I signed on for access at the BBS I used, it immediately asked
for a screen name. I typed in the first stupid thing that came to my
head, and it was dirtboy.

When I finally got rid of it, I just wanted to use my first name, then
realized about 4 different "Tim's" were posting. =8^/

Yeah, that was it! I thought it was the coolest thing when a buddy
told me about it. At the time I didn't think there were that many of us
dirt-bike types around. Man, I sure have met and made a bunch of good
friends and riding buddies thanks to those humble beginnings. Heck,
I've even learned a trick or two.....

I'll second that. Troy needs to quit work, get on welfare, then he'd

I'd have probably been doing the same thing if you hadn't of warned me of

It is with a heavy heart that I regret to inform you that Jeff Deeney
appears to have been seriously injured during some sort of
motorcycle accident.

I wasn't listening closely enough to the local cable-station news to
catch what it was all about. I also haven't been able to contact his
wife, he may not even be in the local hospitals because they seem to
have no knowlege of him. (Flight for Life will often take victims to
their own facility)

The news said it was "awful." I hope they're wrong.

They're not.

A guy a couple of cubicles down is always plugged into a scanner so
I asked him if he picked up anything on this. After giving me the
usual ".. those thing are dangerous ...you're all nuts ...", he said there
had been a single vehicle accident involving a motorcycle seven miles
southwest of town. There was a fire involved as the Masonville Volunteer
Fire Dept. was called to the scene to put out a grass fire and the rider
was airlifted to DGH Burn Unit. Not good. I'm trying to find out more.

Damn!

Summary: How many trucks does it take to run a CBR900RR off the road?
Originator: matthews@ajsh
Nntp-Posting-Host: ajsh.colorado.edu

I heard the strangest story today. Those of you who live away from
the Colorado Front Range are probably often amused by the strange
juxtiposition of civilized and backwoods mentalities here in
Colorado, but you local folks should listen up seriously because it
looks like this time we have a real maniac to deal with.

I was just down at a local shop to pick up some fork dust boots
that I ordered for the GS450s, and one of the parts guys was all aflame
about an "accident" he saw on his way into work today. He
was riding in through the foothills and was nearly run off the
road by - get this - a truck with *llamas* in it! That by itself
might not be too bad, even a bit amusing on a good day, but later on
down the road he came across a group of emergency trucks strung out
across a field, with oil on the outside of a turn and what looked like
a burning motorcycle over across a field. He was nearly stopped anyway
trying to tiptoe around the oil, so he rode up to one of the
firemen and asked what was happening. The reply was that the
cyclist was pretty badly burned and they were clearing a helicopter
landing area to fly him to a hospital. The fireman didn't know how
it happened, so the parts guy told him about the crazy truck driver,
thinking that the truck ran the bike off the road.

The fireman said he'd radio it in, so the driver is probably behind
bars now, but it left all of us with major new jitters about meeting
trucks on the wrong side of a canyon road. With the laws as lax as they
are we can probably look forward to meeting up with this idiot
truck in the near future, as the courts will probably just slap his
wrist and let him keep his license "for the continuance of his
business." Business? Llamas? Sheesh, let the granola yuppies
grow their own pack animals; let's put this driver in the electric
chair and pour gasoline over him.

Sorry for the diatribe, but after having been run off the road once
by a drink driver I don't take too kindly to that sort of lunacy.
*sigh* April's just around the corner, maybe I should just take a
deep breath, wait for spring, and leave the flaming to someone else.

Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Yes, I had a mishap,
but I've been released from the hospital and I'm now at home for a few
weeks. Too bad I can't say the same for my motorcycle. Writing is a
little awkward with some of the bandages, so please excuse any errors.

I've got good news and bad news. The good news is that I finally got
the 750 put back together. Ron Miller was over a couple of nights ago
and helped me wrestle the engine back into the frame. Another late
night in the garage had the pipes and carburetors back on. The next
morning, I hooked up the fuel and fired it up. It took a few minutes
for the engine to catch, but it eventually started firing. First on
one, two, three, and finally all four cylinders. The garage and
driveway were filled with blue smoke as the assembly lubrication burned
off.

Before I tell you any more, I have a confession to make. Ron knows all
about this and has threatened to make my frugality public, so I may as
well beat him to it. Because I place little value on the street pig, I
didn't want to invest any more than necessary to get her running again.
The only new parts I bought for the top end rebuild were one exhaust
valve and a top end seal kit. I reused the cam chains, the chain wear
blocks, and even the piston rings. Everything was still well within
specification after 37k miles and 11 years and I saw no reason to
replace them. If only I'd known then what I know now. :-(

After about an hour of gentle riding around town, I decided to take her
out in the country for some high speed break-in. There's a nice little
two-lane here that winds around Horsetooth Reservoir above town. After
warming up on several miles of twisties, I turned South at Masonville.
There are some good straight stretches here so I decided to open it up
for a long burst.

Not long after the 85mph speedometer buried the needle, I begin to
detect that something was not right. Within a matter of seconds, a dull
ticking grew to a loud clacking and the entire motorcycle begin to
shudder. I just started to shut down the throttle when one of the rods
snapped and proceeded to ventilate the crankcases. The engine suddenly
stopped turning and locked the rear wheel; which was now thoroughly
coated with oil.

The back end came around on me just before I regained enough composure
to pull the clutch in. Being halfway sideways, the bars violently
wrenched my shoulders and I was almost tossed off as the bike
straightened out. By this time, I would estimate that I was still doing
at least 80 miles per hour. Having focused on getting the bike back
under control, I had failed to notice the sharp corner coming up. When
I tried the brakes, I quickly learned that the engine had hurled oil
over all three disks. What I wouldn't have given for good old drum
brakes right about then!

When it became obvious that there was no way I was going to make the
corner with no brakes and oil covered tires, I stood the bike up and
tried to pick a path with the minimum number of hazards. I think that I
got some air as I left the roadway and dropped down the slight bank into
a field. I narrowly missed a fence post and punched through a barbed
wire fence.

If you've ridden along the county road South of Masonville, you've
probably seen the large llama ranch to the East of the County road.
Well, the field that I had rocketed into happened to be occupied by a
herd of very surprised llamas. They scattered as I approached, but I
still managed to clip the hindquarters of a large brown and white male,
sending waves of pain through my left hand and forearm. Having cleared
the shaggy creatures, I found myself headed for a ditch with a berm on
the side that I was approaching. I had the choice of hitting the ditch
square, or trying to lay the bike down. I realized that with my current
rate of speed, even sliding, I would still hit the ditch at high speed,
so I opted to square up as best I could, stand up on the pegs, and
prepare for the impact. It's really amazing how fast the brain
processes information in the adrenelin induced time expansion.

The suspension bottomed with a loud Ker-THUNK at both ends as I hit the
embankment. I pulled back hard on the bars as I crested the mound to
prevent the back end from kicking up into the air. Ideally I would have
used a burst of throttle at this point to maintain the proper attitude.
For a while, I thought that I was going to clear the entire ditch, but
when I landed, the frame smacked into the soft dirt lining the opposite
lip of the ditch. I could hear the pipes crumple and grind beneath me.

The impact tore my hands from the bars and the chin of my helmet smacked
into the tank, scattering stars across the inside of my faceshield. I
was actually quite lucky that my hands were not on the bars at this
point. You see, as irrigation ditches in Colorado often have, this one
was lined with large cottonwood trees. Through some kind of divine
intervention, my trajectory took me squarely between two of them. This
would have been OK if the trees were six inches further apart. Each end
of the handlebars sent up a shower of coarse, dry bark as the bars
received a modified cafe racer bend.

I managed to wrestle control of the mangled handlebars just as I looked
up to see an electric fence approaching. By this time, my speed had
been slowed considerably. I was able to bring the back end around and
slide to a stop within inches of the fence. I sat there for a few
moments to take inventory of all major limbs. I was astounded to
discover that other than some sore muscles, I was pretty much unscathed.

Then I noticed the strong smell of gasoline. I stepped of the bike and
put it on the sidestand. The source of the gasoline was a deep gouge in
the leading edge of the tank, probably from the barbed wire fence.
Hearing an approaching vehicle, I turned to see the llama rancher
blazing across the field on a 4-wheeler. The last thing I remember was
walking toward him, loosening my helmet, and trying to think up an
appropriate opening line like, "I meant to do that! He-He".

I'm told that the fireball created when the sidestand sunk in the soft
dirt and the bike tipped into the electric fence was quite spectacular.
I was very fortunate that the rancher was able to douse my flaming
clothing in short order. Unfortunately, the only thing he had to douse
the flames with was a couple gallons of insecticide. Nevertheless, the
doctors tell me that my chances of leading a normal life are pretty
good. The bandages should be off in time for our dirt riding trip to
Canyonlands, but I would imagine I'll have to stay out of the sun as
much as possible.

So here it is, the first of April, spring is here in full force, and I'm
stuck inside until some of these lesions either explode or fall off. Let
this be a lesson, don't scrimp on repairs, or you'll pay, painfully. :-/

Hmph! Once you get a reputation as being older than dirt, I guess it
sticks. :-)

I'm drawing a blank on who started the mailing list, but it almost seems
he was a doctor? I've probably got some stuff archived at home, but it's

Thanks! Just to let you know my luck hasn't changed at all: I got back
from a fun, but uneventful weekend of trail riding with a friend, parked
the XR600 and went to get the monster cable lock, and while my back was
turned the sidestand dug in and the bike went flatside down. The result
was a shattered clutch perch, and silly thing was stationary at the time.
