This is a formal request for discussion for a new newsgroup: rec.autos.4x4

Group name: rec.autos.4x4
Status: unmoderated
Distribution: world-wide

Summary: This newsgroup would serve as a place where users could ask
questions and get advice about 4-wheel drive vehicles, and places they
could be driven offroad legally.

Rationale: Many people have been using other auto newsgroups like
rec.autos, or rec.autos.makers.chrysler to discuss their 4x4 vehicle
questions. These groups do not give a lot of responses to the 4x4
owner due to the broad nature of information they cover. This group
would be geared towards the 4-wheel drive owner, no matter what make
of vehicle is owned.

Thank you for your consideration.

I am strongly in favor of creating such a newsgroup.

Not to object, but maybe rec.autos.trucks would be a good general area...
4x4s are classified as light trucks in most cases, I think. This way,
more similar vehicles could be discussed in the same place. (I think, but
I could be wrong, that some vehicles are sold both as 2WD and as 4x4).

I thought there was a rec.autos.offroad already, but I'm mistaken.
Just goes to show I think there should be such a group, even if I'm
not a likely participant in it.

Dunno about `4x4', though. `offroad' seems better.

While many vehicles are sold as both 4x2 and 4x4 (most pickups, for
example), some are only sold as 4x4 (Jeep Wranglers, Toyota Land
Cruisers, Range Rovers, and so forth). Additionally, although many are
classified as light trucks, some are not, and the classification may
differ from state to state. For example, how would you classify a Jeep
Grand Cherokee (an honest question, not a flame)? I'd classify it as a
passenger car that happens to have 4wd (if so equipped). I don't know
how Arizona classifies them, or if it distinguishes between a 2wd GC
and a 4wd GC.

Because of the nature of off-highway activities, and the wide variety
of vehicles that can participate, I think a separate group is the way
to go.

I intend to vote yes.

An enthusiastic YES!

While there aree a few mailing lists that deal with the subject to one
degree or another, and an alt.macho-trucks newsgroup, rec.autos.4x4 would
be an excellent alternative or compliment to these groups.

But would rec.autos.offroad be a better name. Are you (the proponents) looking
more for a groups about off-road activities or a group about 4wd for both on
road and off road activities. I suspect the need is there but I really do think
that perhaps the rec.autos.offroad might a better name.

The proposed purpose of the group is for discussions about 4x4's in
general (that's the way I understand it) and where to engage in legal
off-road activities. I don't think rec.autos.offroad is the ideal name
since many 4WD vehicles (Audi Quattro, Porsche C4, Oldsmobile Brava, VW
Synchro, as well as many SUV's) are never used off road. By focusing the
name of the group as you propose, it's quite possible that a large
segment of 4WD vehicles and their owners may feel or be excluded.

If one were to look for an alternative name, perhaps rec.autos.4WD would
be appropriate, as, to some, 4X4 connotes offroad type vehicles, while
4WD is applicable to a broader segment of the market, including vans and
cars that are not designed for, nor will ever be used, off road.

Yep. It will be the third bad name in a row for rec.autos.

It is a very small number of sites that have the problem. They don't
carry some groups like alt.1d etc. because of the problem. They tend
to be leaf nodes so news transfer isn't that bad.

No flame here, but if it's winter driving tips you're looking for, I
think you'll need to post questions to rec.autos.driving.

The purpose of this group, I believe, will be to discuss topics relating
to four-wheel drive vehicles and driving off road; as well as after market
parts, four-wheel drive trails, clubs and the like. Any others?

In my opinion, rec.autos.4x4 is the most descriptive name for such a group.
To me, "4x4" suggests a vehicle equipped for off-road driving... any four-
wheel drive pickup or sport/utility vehicle. I do not believe what was
described in the original RFD to be relevant to four wheel drive sedans,
station wagons and mini-vans; and suspect such traffic will be minimal,
regardless of the group name.

4x4 is a well known term in the UK, although "fwd" is also becoming
widespread (though that is too obscure a tla for a group name).

rec.autos.all-wheel-drive (or AWD or 4WD or something like that)
rec.autos.light.trucks

The first would cover offroad driving and vehicles (4 x 4 stuff).

The second would cover all cars designed for harsh weather conditions
(e.g. Subarus, AMC Eagles, Jeeps, and other 4x4 and 4WD and AWD
vehicles).

The third would cover all those fuel-wasting vehicles driven by urban
cowboys (and those driven by people who actually need them -- a
relatively small percentage, from what I've seen). This would include
the Jeeps, Land Rovers, etc, as well as the Blazers, Dakotas, and all
the other pickups.

I think the group should be better defined. Exactly which audience are
they trying to reach -- the "people trying to be macho by driving big
trucks" (alt.macho.trucks) group, the offroad group, or the people who
like to have traction in winter group?

One legitimate concern which has not been addressed, though raised in an
earlier post, is the localness of the 4x4 designation, taken from the
U.S. Army. How will that be addressed?

I would like these concerns to be responded to before voting.

I support the creation of an off-road vehicle and four-wheel drive sporting
vehicle newsgroup called rec.autos.4x4.

I think the name is clear and not open to much misinterpretation. The charter
should clearly spell out that on-road four-wheel drives are included, ala.
Audi Quattro, Porsche 959 and Carrera (4).

Of the badges the auto industry has employed (FWD, 4WD) 4x4 is preferable.

MHO,

Jim

Actually, this would seem to make a good deal of sense. This would also
provide a place for other off-roading vehicles, like dune buggies, etc.
They would seem to have more in common with 4X4s than any other group.

Really? Does 4 x 4 include AWD? 4WD passenger cars? Or just trucks, which
are generally the only vehicles using the 4x4 badge?

Why?

rec.autos.4x4 is more descriptive than any of the above and would include
the three types of groups you list below...

> The first would cover offroad driving and vehicles (4 x 4 stuff).

Things like lift kits, installing larger tires, winches, Jeep trails,
etc. I assume.

I would be suprised to see much discussion about four wheel drive cars
and wagons... anywhere. However, if an Audi Quattro owner would like
to know what its ramp travel index is; I'm sure they could post an ask.

Fuel wasting urban cowboys or not, the sport/utility vehicle market alone
(not including pickups) is estimated at 1.5 million vehicles.

The target group was defined very well in the original RFD, in my opinion.
The group is for people interested in sport utility vehicles as well as
four wheel drive pickups. The name rec.autos.4x4 is very descriptive and
would seem to be the most appropriate.

As for better traction in winter... how many times can someone to tell
you to "pump the brakes" or "turn into the direction of your skid"???
Come on.

Besides the States, I've seen the term "4x4" in Canada, Mexico, Australia
and England. Any others???

Since I work for a company that seems to have a policy of "company cars are
4x4"
I vote FOR the group...

Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Brazil, Iceland, Switzerland, Sweden,
Germany, Japan - I have met, spoken with, or read about people from those
areas, and they use the term 4x4.
