Hi, I did encounter some severe problems when trying to install the
locked version of SP1 for Inventor R5.
The computer has W2K SP2 UK version, with the new Windows Installer 2.0
Redistributable for Windows NT 4.0 and 2000.
The Windows Installer returns following message:

Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Autodesk
Inventor 5. The Windows installer cannot continue.

And yes it is the original Inventor R5 CD I did put into the drive
(reg. the Knowledgebase article below.)

The MS installer first ask's for:
\Inventor\Setup.msi
On the CD, I'm browsing for that file, next the MS installer ask's for:
\Inventor\Setup1.cab
And I'm browsing for that file too, and the whoosh, Error 1706

On another computer also with W2K SP2 UK, but with the original and
older MS installer the error message was exactly the same.
On both computers i'm logged in as the "Administrator".

One thing that I have to admire (it was comming to my mind :-) is that
the Inventor R5 installations was based on the final Inventor R5 build
(M.5.5000.5058e) posted on the ADN ftp-site the 12'th of september. I
just couldn't wait :-) and I guess that this really shouldn't count or
what???

Knowledgebase article from MS TechNet:

SYMPTOMS
========

When you try to use a feature that is set to Installed on First Use,
you may
receive the following error message:

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is
unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder
containing the
installation package 'data1.msi' in the box below.

However, you cannot type anything in the box at the bottom of the
dialog box, and
there is no Browse button.

When you click Cancel, an error message similar to the following
appears:

Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product <Office 2000
product>. The Windows installer cannot continue.

NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Windows 2000, you only receive the
second of
these two error messages.

CAUSE
=====

These symptoms can occur if all of the following are true:

- You are using Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.

- You have Windows Installer version 1.1 installed.

NOTE: Windows 2000 includes Windows Installer version 1.1.

- You are logged on as either a user or a power user.

- The AllowLockdownBrowse policy is not in effect.

WORKAROUND
==========

If you are logged on as a user or power user and you want to browse to
an Office
source location, you must turn on the AllowLockdownBrowse system
policy.

policy:

1. Log on as a member of the Administrators group.

click OK.

4. Add the Group Policy snap-in.

expand the
view.

6. Click the plus sign (+) next to Computer Configuration to expand the
view.

7. Expand Administrative Templates.

8. Expand Windows Components, and then click Windows Installer, so that
the
Windows Installer policy settings appear in the right pane.

setting on"

policy
setting.

13. Click Enabled, and then click to select the "Check to force this
setting on"
check box.

14. Click OK to accept the new policy setting.

15. Quit Microsoft Management Console and then restart the computer.

NOTE: For more information about how to turn on these policies in
Windows 2000,
please see online Help in the Microsoft Management Console.

In Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

it. If
you are running Windows NT or Windows 2000, you should also update your

and then
click DWORD Value.

10. With New Value #1 selected, type "AllowLockdownMedia" (without the
quotation
marks), and then press ENTER.

11. Double-click the new AllowLockdownMedia DWORD value.

12. Type "1" (without the quotation marks) in the Value data box, and
then click
OK.

13. On the Registry menu, click Exit.

14. Log off as the administrator, and log back on as a user or power
user.

MORE INFORMATION
================

If you turn on the AllowLockdownBrowse policy, the Browse button is
displayed in
the error message dialog box. However, if you browse to a valid .msi
file on
your CD, you continue to receive the 1706 error message. In order to
browse to
the .msi file on your CD, you also must turn on the AllowLockdownMedia
policy.

Lars,

Try it again, but insert the CD into the drive BEFORE running the service pack.

Thanks for your answer, but this was already my procedure.
SP1 executables was copied to the local harddrive, then the original IV R5 CD was placed in the
CD-ROM drive, then I activated the SP1 executable. After this I got the Error 1706 message from
the MS Installer.
