I've just bought the cigarette power cable and realised that it inserts in
the same slot as the data cable. Interesting design concept !!!

I need to have both attached at the same time.

A review of various sites tells me that one or two people in the US produce
a combined cable but Garmin do not. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to
splice the 2 cables I already have (if so I'd appreciate instructions) or do
I need to buy one of the combined ones. If the latter, is there anywhere in
the UK that sells them.

Thanks

Best way is to CUT the power lead, then use a film container to join the 2
cables, by using the cigar lighter plug plus a data (rs232) plug, all joined
within the above box, using nylon terminal blocks(V.small ones). All of the
stuff can be had from Pfrank in your local area, but you do need to very
very handy with a soldering iron, or it is cheaper to buy a combined lead.
Advantage in making your own is that it can be as long as you like! I have
made several of the above, and it is neat and foolproof.

I'm not sure which model you are talking about, but the Garmin 12xl had a
data cable, a power cable, and a combined data/power cable avaulable, as
well as an unterminated cable that ended in bare leads. These were just the
factory selections. I am surprised that they would not offer a data/power
cable for their newer designs. If they don't, see if they offer an
unterminated cable, and then add the rs-232 and power plugs - universal
types of plugs found at radio shack.

By your description I assume that you have one of the Etrex
models. If so, Garmin does indeed make a combination data/DC
cable. The part number is 010-10268-00 and you can order it
directly from Garmin. Your local retailer should be able to
get it for you as well. I'm using mine as I type this and it
works like a charm. Check the following URL for more info:

You don't say which model you have, but I believe Garmin makes a
combined cable power & PC cable for all their models. The part numbers
are:
010-10268-00 for all eTrex models and eMap
010-10165-00 for GPS II/III/III+/V, all 12 series, and all Street
Pilots.

They are also available from non-Garmin sources in the US at somewhat
better prices, or you can get the connectors from the pfranc people and
make your own - just be sure you know the voltage requirements of your
unit.

I recently had a problem with the yellow eTrex not communicating with my pc
(win98 se). The eMap worked fine but the etrex could not be recognized using
the same COM port and cable with the eTrex set for 'Garmin' and the software
set for 'eTrex'. I received the following trouble shooting procedures from
Garmin. They may be of interest to others 'just in case'. I would presume
that they apply to all eTrex models.

Problem: Expert GPS with eMap communicates fine, confirming
that COM1 and cable are functioning. Unplug eMap, plug in eTrex (Yellow),
set interfaces for Garmin, eTrex. "Device not responding." Try to use
UPDATER with 2.11 .rgn file. "Device not responding". (I had previously
updated the eTrex to 2.11 using this cable and settings.) Cleaned contacts
on eTrex with pencil eraser. Applied slight pressure to connector while
trying to communicate. No luck. Can you help? Thanks!....patrick

FIRST REPLY:
Thanks for contacting GARMIN,
Unit could have corrupt data causing it to perform incorrectly. Please try
the following to correct (this will erase all user stored data):
with unit off press and hold "Enter" "PAGE" and "On/Power" at the same time
when display appears take fingers off buttons
unit will display message that all user stored data will be cleared, select
yes then press enter.
unit will flash off then come back on.
take outside for 15 to 25 minutes for re-initialization and update (at this
point you may also try to interface with PC again.
Once unit has signal date should be correct. You may have to adjust time
offset or zone for you area.

(PS-Please include all email correspondence already written when you reply

SECOND REPLY:
Put the unit in NMEA OUT, and see if it will export NMEA sentences in
hyperterminal:
1. No other programs are currently running:
a. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del (opens the close program window).
b. Choose end task for all items except: DO NOT CLOSE "Explorer" or
"Systray"
c. Continue until every program is closed except: DO NOT CLOSE "Explorer" or
"Systray"
d. Try the download again.

2. Confirm that Windows recognizes your COM port:
a. Right-click on "My Computer" Icon and select "properties."
b. Click on Device Manager
c. Confirm your COM port is listed with no errors marked.

3. If any other serial devices (PalmPilots, scanners, digitizers,
trackballs, serial mouse, etc.) you may need to uninstall or disable the
drivers. You may need to contact the device manufacturer for assistance.

Please check to ensure that NMEA data is flowing between your GPS and PC:
You can test the NMEA output of your GPS on many computers as follows:
First, set up your GPS for NMEA output:
1. Go to the Interface menu of your GPS (usually in the System Menu)
2. Change the interface setting to NMEA, or No In, NMEA out.
3. Make sure the Baud rate indicates 4800 if shown.

Next, set up your computer to listen to the GPS as follows:
The following test works on Windows computers with Hyperterminal installed.
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Select "Run..."
3. Type "Hypertrm" (do not type quotation marks) and choose "OK."
4. Enter "GPS" for the name of the connection, and choose "OK."
5. Skip country code, area code, and phone number.
6. Next to "Connect using," use the pull down menu to select the comm port
that your GPS is connected to. (For example: Direct to Com 1) then choose
"OK."

7. Port setting should be set as follows:
Bits Per Second: 4800
Data Bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
Flow control: Hardware

8. Select "OK" to approve settings.

Now, you should see strings of data (letters and numbers) scrolling on the
screen. If the data is visible, then your GPS and computer are able to
communicate. If not, please start back at step one and try with another com
port selected (you may have to try several different ones). If you find the
comm you are able to communicate on, make sure it is selected to that comm
port or choose auto-detect in MapSource. Also, you may need to disable other
devices that use the same com port.

you are incorrect in one bit of this message

the cable you quote for all gps 12's is not strictly true as a GPS 12 not xl
map etc needs a different cable with a 12 to 6 v converter built in the
power lead or puff no more garmin.

the correct cable for this model is 010-10164-00
and it can be sourced in the uk for 31.95 inc post pack and vat from
www.wsplc.com along with a plethora of other cables and they sent it special
delivery next day to me :-)

Uh, for what Garmin? I know of at least four different
Garmin connectors.

At any rate, splicing will be difficult but may be doable.

You connect the negative power lead to the fourth pin, and also the ground
from the PC data lead(pin5 on a 9-pin connector. Your data lead has 3 wires
and the power lead has 2 wires, but since 2 are connected to the same pin,
it uses the 4 pins.

You are absolutely right! The Etrex range is 3 volts and requires voltage
regulation at the cigar lighter plug end, whereas most other Garmins,
particularly the 45 and 48 range, will run off 12 volts, in addition to
their 6-volt internal batteries.

Goto http://www.pfranc.com/cables/index.shtml. Look for the eMax. It has
both a cigarette lighter plug and serial cable all combined into one. They
are $35.00 plus $5 shipping. Works great for my eTrex Legend. You will
receive it within a week if you use paypal.

Garmin makes a combined power and data cable for the eTrex series. I do not
know the model number but I purchased mine online.

Check out these sites:

http://www.thegpsstore.com/site/

http://www.gpsnow.com/

They sell GPS equipment and accessories -- you will find the eTrex combined
power and data cable on both of these sites.
