Hello everybody, I've just two short questions.
1.
The left hand of my Iconbar gets overloaded (3 HD,1 FD,1 Resource). Now
I'am searching for a programm which replaces the 5 big device Icon with
one Icon. You should have easy access to all the devices by just this one
Icon. I'm using !Multidrive for a while but this isn't a good solution IMHO.
Can someone of you please help me?

2.
I've just added a new Syquest 270MB-Device to my system, but now I've a small
problem. If there's no Cartridge inside the new drive, the System does not
boot up and waits in the initialisation-screen until i insert a cartridge.
This problem has never appeared with my old (which is in fact a newer
Version than the 'new' drive) Syquest-drive.
The new drive (which causes this problem has Firmware version 2.05 on and
the old drive has firmware Version 3.14 on.
The jumpers 4 till 7 are equal. Jumpers 1-3 are different, because they set
the ID-Number for the devices.

Many thanx to anyone who can help me,

You think that's overloaded? I've got CD, Zip, hard drive, apps, network
and printer. :-)

There are apps that do this and until recently I would have sent you
one of the free ones- but my hard drive took a pounding from an
errant Linux and, well, the rest is history. As is most of my data.

You think that's overloaded? I've got CD, 4 HDs, floppy, Apps, FontFS, 2
network mounts, Socketeer, plus occasionally a printer, occasionally a
Zip, and DeltaNet when I'm serving pages to the PC.

I forgot to mention the NFS mounts (three of them), the copy of
Zap (ever present), Newsbase (serving news and mail to the PalmPilot
and the PC), WebServe, CSD Tool, MemNow, or the clock.

When I wrote the above, I didn't have these (sob).

They work now :-)

I find that my 270 SyQ will do the same unless
the spin-up flags are set to:

Auto spin-up / on
Load media on spin-up / on

(Cumana SCSI II)

Hope this helps.

What SCSI card are you using to drive the Syquest? My Eesox card simply
reports an empty drive- it even changes the icon appropriately! ISTR that
some other SCSI cards have variables that can be set to overcome the
problem - eg something like 'max boot wait' or similar.

I was talking purely about icons on the left-hand side of my icon bar,
which was what the thread was originally about.

Now if we're going to include the right-hand side as well....

There is (was) only one app that ever did this that I found - Storage.
It's not being developed anymore AFAIK, later versions didn't work with my

So, no, there isn't a solution apart from Multidrive, which I use too.

Same with my EZ135 :-( (Well, something or other time-outs eventually and
the m/c continues booting).

And I can't change carts without getting (irrelevant disc errors).
However, Storage did suppress those...

Using pinboard the directory icons get lost under other windows. Tinydirs
may not look as pretty, but you can always bring the icon bar to the front
to get at the directory you want.

And, more precisely, about the number of drive icons.

I found a lovely app many, many years ago called !Kysmet written
by Tracy of the SICK crew. Unfortunately the site that the most
recent version came from seems to have vanished (it was a *LONG*
time ago now) but I've spk'd up the version I'm using (it still
has all its help files, etc..) and you can find it at:

<URL:ftp://xavier.bangor.ac.uk/pub/pdapps/kysmet.zip>

What does it do?

Well, as well as a Menon replacement, it allows you to create a
stack of icons for various drives / fs's / directories / whatever
which climbs up an ibar-following window just above the left edge
of the ibar.

>Now if we're going to include the right-hand side as well....

Nar! If that's what you want then get yourself an Apple and only
have one application icon visible at once ;-)

About Left hand iconbar:

I've just found another solution: !Director. Try it, it's good. And if you
unplug your SCSIFiler, your iconbar gets emty and you still hav control over
your devices.

Not an answer but a suggestion to any knowledgable people out there,
whould it be possible to use smaller icons, eg the HD icon is about
twice the width of the CD icon, is there a way of using smaller HD,
SCSI, FD etc icons so they take up less space? I tried loading new icons
into the spritepool but it didn't work, I assume the width is hard coded
into some module, has anyone managed to change it?

Another thing to remeber is that overly long disk names can unnecessarily
clutter the IconBar.

Yes, you're right. But 'Free' works fine. The only problem I have is
'Format','Verify' and 'Name Disc' (I have a German RiscOS version, it could
be that I've translated the Names wrong, sorry). I've contacted the Author

I changed mine into something the same size :-(
I found that the SCSI/CDFS icons need to be loaded from Boot:Tasks all
others were done in Boot:Predek.
If you use smaller icons you will also need smaller names !

It's very foolproof. It's just that fools using it tend to destroy

[snip... lots of stuff about director & disc icons.]

I have just put a small (5k) ArcFS archive on my website containing a quick
hack, working name : !MiniDisc.

See http://www.parsed-out.demon.co.uk/minidisc.arc

This is a Director app which replaces any /filecore/ drive icons with a
single one.

Existing problems :

1) No documentation
2) No interactive floppy formatting
3) No 'Verify' or 'Share'

Let me know if you like it (It /really/ seems 2 neaten up the icon bar).

I have not included any RMKill's in the startup as yet, as who knows what
FSN's you're all using. I may put in a bit of auto-detection 2 RMKill any
xxxFiler modules if requested.

I expect to round it off this weekend sometime.

Later...

Why don't you just use Director? It can do exactly the same without BASIC
progs. Or have I understood you wrong (sorry then)? Can you

Your Basic-program is a good idea. You could open all the Filer-Windows
(Format, Verify a.s.o.) and execute the commands as a own wimptask.

Ah, good :-)

I like it :-)

I do that myself (but I'd rather not). However, that's not to great when
<Shift>booting. Storage managed to kill disk icons and restore them when
quit...

Good. And do include ResourceFS too.

> I expect to round it off this weekend sometime.

Well, include some serious help please! It doesn't work out of the box,
and in fact all I've managed to do is to get it to *replace* one of
Director's menus (I'd much rather add it to an existing menu) by including
'-menu "Dynamic:JTUtils -FCList"' in the default menu file.

It would also be very nice if you could also navigate the disk from this
menu. And what about the disk's name rather than the FS name?

Is 'Storage' a similar program? I'm having trouble putting the icons back,
no-matter if I Unplug or RMKill them. Where can I find this prog, as I'd
like 2 do a little investigating. - I've no PRM's :-(

I'll add a switch 2 allow this if you like, I'm not keen on it as a default
for 2 reasons :
1) This thread started out as 'Too many icons & loss of 'format' etc...',
ResourceFS only has an 'Open $' menu.
2) I like my current 'Select - Open', 'Adjust - Director path' setup.

Done. My apologies for the lack before, but it was announced as a 'quick
hack'. :-)

Should now work OK. I have created it as a 'stand-alone' app, rather than
as a plugin for my 'JTUtils' program. (... coming soon!)

Done, Done.

It /does/ use Director for icons, menus & filters. I have simply written a
dynamic menu of all drives on that icon, & added a filer-style menu for
'name-disc', 'dismount', 'free'. (more 2 come here.)

Thanks.
Some of the filer operations are causing me problems @ the moment though.

This is an example taglines file for ZapEmail. You should replace this with a
suitably-formatted file of your own.

Weellll....

It performs a similar function.

<http://www.bsdman.demon.co.uk> is the last address I had. If not, it's
available off my HD.

I do, I do ;-)

Awww :-(

So, it falls into the 'too many icons then' :-). As does CDFS, BTW ;-)

OK

Indeed - I was just indicating my level of difficulty in the
setting-up-Director department!

Excellent!
