Tim O'Brian - Amusement Business
April 1st, 2003

In a move today that stunned the amusement industry and roller coaster
enthusiasts around the world it was announced that four U.S. Paramount
Parks will blast into the coaster wars at warp speed by building
421-foot tall roller coasters. Themed around a common link found in
four Star Trek series produced by Paramount/Viacom during the last 4
decades, the Starship Enterprise, these four identical coasters will
simultaneously open on April 4th, 2004, and claim the world's record
for Tallest Coaster from Cedar Point’s Top Thrill Dragster.

"We're very pleased to be announcing this exciting new coaster," said
Craig Ross, Executive Vice President and General Manager of
Cincinnati-based King's Island. "A ride of this stature is the
perfect addition to our collection of world-class rides and the Star
Trek theme is cherished around the world. Airtime junkies will
finally have a reason to rejoice next year!"

Tim Fisher, executive Vice President and General Manager of
Paramount's Great America in Santa Clara, California, summed his
excitement in one word: "Finally! We've waited for years to be able
to add this kind of coaster to our arsenal. It's taken years of
working in tandem with the city of Santa Clara and the San Jose
International Airport to be granted clearances for such an addition
and we can't wait to break ground."

"This is what our fans have been waiting for," exclaimed Richard
Zimmerman, Executive Vice President and General Manager of King's
Dominion in Doswell, Virginia. "Over the past few of years we've been
polling guests in the park and reading various roller coaster fan
sites such as Coasterbuzz. The number one comment is always about
Apollo's Chariot, at our neighbors down in Willamsburg, and why we
don't have something like it...or better. Well, when the plans are
officially released at ACE's 25th Anniversary Coaster Convention this
June enthusiasts better be prepared to be blown away!"

"We've been working with corporate headquarters for a few years now on
getting a coaster of this magnitude for our park," said Watt Burris,
Executive Vice President and General Manager of Paramount’s Carowinds
just outside Charlotte, North Carolina. "They've always said, 'Its
coming, but we want to do it right.' Well, let me tell you they've
got it right! After adding family-oriented rides and attractions for
the last couple of years thrill seekers better prepare themselves for
an experience like no other!"

Riders will begin their journey at Star Fleet Academy where they will
train to be starship commanders. Training is interrupted by a Borg
attack and each guest must board a starship to escape. Each pre-show
building will feature a short film staring Patrick Stewart, revising
his role as the popular Captain Jean Luc Picard.

The four coasters, designed by Wichita-based Chance-Morgan, are all
421 feet high and over 6,000 feet in length. Like Steel Dragon 2000
at Nagashima Spa land in Japan the lift will feature two individual
chains. Each will feature custom-designed trains sporting a round,
saucer-like lead car and warp engines mounted at the rear. The
Enterprise's ship number, NC1071, will grace each sleek white train.
Track and supports have been in production at their Wichita plant
since January and parts should be arriving at the three east coast
parks first in order to get a jump on the winter weather later this
year. Construction, testing, and extensive theming is estimated to
take approximately nine months.

Matt, please be honest. Is this real?

My heart stopped beating when I read that Great America would be getting a
new coaster in the near future, but then again I looked at the date at the
top of the story.

If this is a joke, you sure know how to mess around with us
hypercoaster-less Bay Area people! :-D

The Enterprise's number actually was NCC-1701. The first Enterprise in
the original Star Trek TV show was NCC-1701A and the Enterprise in Star
Trek The Next Generation was NCC-1701D.

Probably just a typo from their press release.

Though I'm not a HUGE fan of Star Trek, I did watch it a lot when I was
growing up.

For some reason, the classification number on the Enterprise always has
been stuck in my memory.

And I, on the other hand, have never been a fan. I've seen maybe a
few of the original shows and none of any of the others [Next Gen,
etc]. I have seen some of the movies, tho...they were pretty good.
But I couldn't tell you the difference between a Klingon or a Romulan
and I have no idea what that thing is they mention in the press
release...a Borg?

A Borg is a cybernetically enhanced member of any race the Borg
encountered. They assimilate their victims, also thye have a collective
mind which make them able to react and adapt to different situations.
Their slogan is: 'Resistance is Futile'.

Yeah, but at least the joke admitted something I've been saying for a
while now.

"After adding family-oriented rides and attractions for

the last couple of years..."

That's so true, which is why I've been screaming to bring back coaster
wars. Enough of the family rides.

I could see PKI building a 7k foot Chance Morgan coaster like Steal
Dragon because they have the land and the mountain to make the 1st
drop 400+ feet.

TERA TERA TERA.

Yes, I am flying to CP to ride TTD this year. Build it and they will
come. But I've never been on TR TR. Actually I'm visiting PKI
on this trip, but won't go on TR TR first, it will be the coasters.

Tsk, tsk. The original series (ST:TOS) was NCC-1701. The fourth
ST:TOS movie introduced the 1701-A since the first ship (refitted for
the first movie) was blown up in 3rd movie. Enterprise 1701 B was
first seen in the first Next Generation (ST:NG) film on a shakedown
cruise with Captain Harriman. 1701 C was seen in a ST:NG episode were
a ship came out if some time thingy from the past with Captain Rachel
Garret. 1701 D is the ST:NG ship which was lost in the first NG movie
and 1701 E popped up for the 2nd thru 4th NG movies. Of course the
newest Star Trek show Enterprise had to muck things up by having a
starship named Enterprise 100 or so years prior to Kirks time (first
*life*). They solved the continuety problem with the numbering/letters
by labeling it NX-1701.

I hate to point out how much of a nerd I am but the original TV show's
Enterprise was in fact the NCC-1701. The Enterprise became NCC-1701A
after the refit in between the end of the television series and Star
Trek: The Motion Picture and it's first appearance was in TMP. The
Enterprise NCC-1701B showed up in Star Trek: Generations before Kirk
got sucked into the Nexus, and the NCC-1701C showed up in a Star Trek:
The Next Generation episode "Yesterday's Enterprise". The NCC-1701D is
the Enterprise used in Star Trek: The Next Generation and it was
destroyed in Star Trek:Generations. Finally the NCC-1701E made it's
first appearance in Star Trek: First Contact and it will presumably
never be seen again after the failure of Star Trek: Nemesis. I
addition to all of these Enterprises there is also the NX-01(?) which
is being seen now in the Star Trek series Enterprise.

Wasn't it still NCC-1701 in The Motionless Picture? I was under the
impression that was the ship that lasted until it was destroyed in
ST III: The Search for Spock, and that NCC-1701A debuted at the
very end of ST IV: The Voyage Home. I could've gotten the numbers/
letters wrong, but I'm certain that *some* incarnation of the Enterprise
was destroyed in ST III and the next version was in the finale of ST IV.

(I am far, far from being the most rabid follower of Trek. I've
only watched a small handful of the TV shows, and less than half
of the movies, most of those from the first set of them. But with
my alma mater and profession being what they are, there was simply
no way I could've completely avoided Trek, even if I'd wanted to. :-)

Are you serious?! That is so frigin' cool! Could you imagine?

One thing I LOOOOOOOVED all the way from the begining was the massive,
rotary airlock doors. The ones that roll away. I fucking love it. The
whole concept of the Promenade gives me chills, that was probably my
favourite aspect of DS9. The architecture of the station itself is
gorgeous... And the. OH MY GOD. THE CHIME, WHEN SOMEBODY REQUESTS TO
ENTER YOUR QUARTERS. THAT CHIME LIVES INSIDE ME. I FUCKING LOVE IT.

Oh my god. Okay. Collected self. Sorry. But it's a very nice tone.

Sort of like that.

Imagine the train made that tone when it launched.

I think... I would just die. My body would just say "No, no, see, there's
nothing better than that", and just... turn off.

Love DS9.
