The Scientist-- on the Penn Library Web

http://www.the-scientist.library.upenn.edu/

The University of Pennsylvania Library became the host and publisher for
the World Wide Web edition of The Scientist beginning with the January
8, 1996 issue. The Scientist is a bi-weekly periodical containing news
and commentary on topics in the life sciences.

The new Penn-based edition of The Scientist, fully designed for the
World Wide Web, includes a number of enhancements over an earlier online
version that appeared in 1992 and continues to be available for Gopher
and other text-only Internet browsers. First, the Web version allows a
stronger emphasis on design. The new format, enriched with graphics,
also features navigational buttons and hot links to earlier editions of
The Scientist; academic, industry, and government homepages; documents
from other Web sites; and e-mail addresses of authors. The reader's
access to source materials -- conceptually linked but physically
distinct from the published text -- is therefore significantly broadened
and facilitated in an altogether new way.

Penn and other research libraries are devoting increasing effort to
defining the preserve of academic information on the Internet, and to
exploring the Internet's potential for disseminating the products of
scholarship. This Web edition is the Penn Library's initial foray into
electronic publishing.

The Scientist joins an expanding set of electronic information resources
available through the Penn Library Web, including library catalogs,
journal citation files, reference works, and fulltext files.

INTERNET PROJECT SEEKS PARTICIPANTS
'UTOPIAN VISIONS '96' - AN INTEGRATED STUDY OF THE PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE

Ever wondered what it was like to live a century ago? Ever pondered what
life will be like a century from now? This project is designed to help
students simultaneously reflect and speculate, considering their place in
history's continuum.

The pilot project, 'Utopian Visions '95,' attracted schools from six
countries and four continents; it was selected as a winner in the ISTE's
annual Activity Plan contest. Thoughtful critiques from our first
participants have guided revisions for 'Utopian Visions '96,' which we're
confident will be even better than its predecessor!

HERE IS A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT:

I. OUR AIM : The end of a millennium approaches. As always, the ending
inspires reflection. We stand upon a moment in time, looking forward to the
future, backward at the past, from the promontory of the present. How did we
get to this point? What 'utopian visions' guided us? Where do we go from
here? What 'visions' will lead us?

Students will examine the 'quality of life' in their respective municipality
(town/city) over a three hundred year time-span. We will begin by 'Looking
Backward' at the century leading to 1896, then consider 'The Present' of
1996, before 'Looking Forward' to 2096. In this manner participants will
view history and current events as part of a continuum, pondering personal
as well as collective issues. We will consider the end of this century and
millennium as an 'historic moment', and think of all contributions to this
project as a 'time capsule' for scholars of the future! Toward that end, we
are presently constructing a Web Page for this project on the WWW.

II. APPLICABLE TO: Students in grades 9 - 12, from virtually all disciplines
(or extra-curricular activities). Participating groups may be large or
small, gathered within an organized body or brought together specifically
for this project. Classroom teachers will have the autonomy to adapt the
project to suit their classroom needs, integrating this study into their
discussion of history, literature, philosophy, and more.

III. THE STRUCTURE - In brief, this is what the project coordinators
envision:
a) Students around the world will discuss 'UTOPIAN VISIONS' (and dystopian
realities) from the perspective of the MUNICIPALITY in which they reside (be
it town, city or state - at the discretion of participating students and
their sponsors).

b) February/March - informal discussion via project listserv and private
email of issues pertaining to 'utopian visions/dystopian realities.'
Students will exchange biographical material, digital photos, and background
information to create both a context and community of inquiry for the
project. All contributions will be archived on the Web Page for easy
reference.

c) April/May - Each school will file three formal reports to the project
listserve, combining objective Data and subjective Narrative. Ultimately,
participants will be asked to provide utopian/dystopian visions of the
future based upon their research and discussions of the past and present.

April 12 - 1st Exchange = 'Looking Backward' ->1896.
April 26 - 2nd Exchange = 'The 'Present' ->1996.
May 10 - 3rd Exchange = 'Looking Forward' -> 2096.

d) On-going E-mail correspondence will allow students to ask follow-up
questions, clarify reports and discuss issues which emerge from the
exchanges.
