Action Alert & Update: Matthew Shepard
What follows is two-fold. First, I would like to outline and recommend a
course of action in the aftermath of the attack on Matthew Shepard. This
will be followed by a report from Denve...@aol.com from Colorado. This
report includes a medical update, along with information on how you can
monitor Matthew's medical status.
It also tells you how you can help directly, both by your contributions and
presence. Finally, it concludes with an open letter by Matthew's parents.
Hopefully, by the end of this read, Matthew Shepard will be more than just a
name to you.
Today is National Coming Out day. It is also a day proclaimed by our
detractors as National Coming Out Of Homosexuality day. One of the anti-gay
sponsors of the latter event, the Family Research Council, has sought to
exploit that attack on Matthew Shepard. They proclaim their deep regret for
the attack on Matthew, while at the same time spouting their mantra that
hate crime victims are no more special than anyone else. They then use
twisted logic to say that glbt advocacy groups are just using the Shepard
case to exploit our own 'agenda'. And to a certain extent, they are right.
If our agenda is that gays, lesbians, bisexuals and the transgendered
community have a right to live free of fear for their personal safety. If
our agenda is to be able to enjoy the same rights and freedoms as
hypocritical homophobic bigots, such as the FRC. If our agenda is that love
is not a crime. Yes, they have a point.
Recent issues, such as same-sex marriage and gays in the military have
received most of our attention over the past several years. I hope that this
brutal attack will bring a new priority....our safety. Protection against
violence and the ability to live as a gay person without fear needs to be
our top priority, along with elimination of all existing sodomy statutes. It
is hard to think about marrying one's partner, when you are lying in a coma.
There are too many parts of America where being gay is as dangerous to live
as it is in Zimbabwe. Many of us don't see it, because a lot of us inhabit
areas that appear to be very gay-friendly and progressive. But as long as
there are areas such as Laramie, where a legislator can compare gay people
to gay bulls who need to be sent to "packing plants" (from Saturday's NY
Times), there will be more threats of violence. And even in alleged bastions
of gay freedom, hate crimes are escalating. The recent spate of attacks in
Greenwich Village is a prime example.
What should happen next?
First, on a national level, there needs to be an organized and
well-publicized protest march through the streets of Laramie. As you will
see in the second part of this report, rallies are planned. But I am talking
about a high-level, organized affair, similar in scope to what happened in
the aftermath of the recent pickup dragging death that shocked the nation.
If Matthew Shepard was a black man and this attack was racially motivated,
the response would have been immediate and powerful. We should demand no
less from our advocacy groups. If we cannot organize a major event in
Laramie in the aftermath of this attack, then we need to
regroup. I think we can do this and I hope that some of our advocacy groups
take the initiative and make a stand here.
Additionally, on a national level, we must make our top priority passage of
Federal Hate Crimes legislation that includes sexual orientation. The time
to strike on this is now and this is where the bulk of our energies should
be directed. I will do the best I can in coming weeks in giving "direct
action" assistance in helping to make this a reality. But, in the short
term, grill your local candidates on their stance on that legislation and
make sure that the information gets out to your local gay organizations and
media.
On a local level, we must demand coverage of this story. For example, in the
NY Daily News, this story has been ignored. They were the only NYC newspaper
not to mention it in their Saturday morning edition and they continued
without coverage on Sunday. What does this say to gay people? It says that
we don't matter. Again, if this were a racial issue, or an attack on a
person based on religion, the answer would not be silence. And in this case,
to reprise the ActUp slogan, Silence does equal Death. While many media
outlets did report the story on Saturday, many of those same outlets ignored
the story on Sunday. We must keep this alive.
I implore all of you, whether or not you have ever done this before, to
write at least 1 letter to an editor, or be a caller on a local talk show.
Do not think that someone will do the work for you. Additionally, make sure
that the local coverage is fair. And if there is no coverage, prod the
papers to explain why? I invite anybody who spots
useful (or bad) coverage on this story to email me either the entire story,
or the URL so that I can access it and I will then forward the news in my
daily news feed with the appropriate contact information so that people can
write letters to the editor. Unfortunately, at this time, I can only
redistribute online materials, unless you type the entire story in.
The talking points you need to make:
1) Hate Crimes legislation must be passed to stress that crimes targetting
gays are unacceptable in a civilized country.
2) Anti-gay rhetoric, including the 'ex-gay' ads (which imply homosexuality
is something one needs to come out from) foster a climate of anti-gay
violence. There will be a new NGLTF study coming out shortly on the ex-gay
ads. I will report when it is available. Access it. Various studies are
available on the Internet on the correlation between hate speech and hate
crime. Do some research on this so you can intelligently relate the facts.
If you have found especially useful research in this area, please forward to
me, so that I can direct people to it online.
3) Let the media know that the situation will only change with action at the
polls. Stress that you want to know candidates views on gay issues and that
THAT will be one of the main things that impact your vote.
4) Make the point that our 'agenda' stops at the point when we have the same
rights and freedoms as the heterosexual majority.
We will not live in fear. We will not go to a hiding place. We will stand up
to our oppressors and demand respect. We will insist on safety for all of
the GLBT family.
If we don't we do dishonor to Matthew Shepard and all of our brothers and
sisters who have been brutalized before him.
The time to mobilize is now. The time to act is now.

Some of you may have known Matthew Shepard through his presence here on AOL.
Unfortunately, the two men who beat him, cut him, tied him to a fence and
burned him with cigarettes, continued to torture him while he begged for his
life, then crushed his skull with the handle of a .357 Magnum and left him
tied with utility cord, crucifixion-style on a wooden fence outside Laramie,
Wyoming, are alleged to have lured him to this fate through an online
chatroom/e-mail exchange.
Your thoughts and prayers are deeply appreciated by Matthew's family and by
those who knew him, whether online or in person. Please take this message
to heart and remind yourselves that even the Internet isn't wholly a safe
place for gays and lesbians and those who celebrate diversity.
While Matthew clings to life in a Fort Collins, Colorado, hospital bed,
supported by a ventilator and the best that modern medicine and technology
can provide, let us acknowledge collectively that it is a simple and
heartfelt prayer that we can best offer this very gentle and peaceful young
student.
Doctors report that Matthew has a massive brain stem injury. His temperature
has fluctuated to 106 degrees over the last 24 hours. An intraventicular
drain has been inserted into his brain to relieve pressure by draining
spinal fluid. He remains in critical condition, and his overall condition
has said to have deteriorated during the past day. Matthew has welts on his
back and an arm, bruises on his knees, and deep cuts on his head and face.
He was hypothermic when he arrived at the hospital. Doctors note that in
cases of traumatic brain injury, it is important to receive medical care
within one hour to improve chances of survival. Matthew remained exposed on
the fence between 18 and 20 hours.

concerned persons throughout Wyoming, Colorado, and the country. The family

NEW DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

I hereby declare war against the United States
Government, and to all its people who support the federal
sanction against same-sex marriage... which may be a majority.
The moment government permits any state to officially and
intentionally deny a gay citizen's right to the pursuit of
happiness--as indeed marriage is a blissful goal--the door is
open to establishing all homophile women and men as second
class citizens in perpetuity.
I perceive this unconstitutional, ungodly sanction as the
first step towards eradicating all known homosexuals in our
sorry nation. The bombing of the Lesbian lounge in Atlanta is
just the beginning...unless the federal government and
mainstream Christian churches--including African-American
congregations--immediately step in and aggressively fight back
against the jihad these homophobes have declared. (I'm not
holding my breath.) Their continued silence and foot-dragging
on the noble issue of same-sex-lover rights, puts blood on
their hands as surely as if they were right-wing fanatics
themselves!
I urge all lesbians, gays, bisexuals, gender changers,
their supporters, and other so-called queer types to bear arms
and take to the streets...and push back the beast of
homophobia that now rears its ugly head in the eyes of the
majority, who prowl this gutted country like ghouls from The
Night Of The Living Dead. For all intent purposes, President
Clinton has nodded his head in approval of a nationwide witch
hunt to kill us anywhere and everywhere we are seen or known
to abide...or at best to deny us jobs, shelter, friendship,
and equal treatment. Our President's wavering on the "gays in
the military" issue, along with the signing of DOMA...places
him in direct responsibility for exacerbating the hostility
against a basically harmless, and decent, group of citizens:
gay women and men.
Likewise for our so-called "liberal" straight
friends...who are too cowardly to display a pink triangle on
their own clothing, or a T-shirt or bumper sticker
proclaiming: "Another Hetero for Lesbian & Gay Rights". Yet
they proudly wear slogans and icons promoting the rights of
African-Americans, women, children, trees, animals, and so on.
The Danes in World War II sported stars of David to conceal
Jewish folk from Nazis...but I hear of none who displayed the
pink triangle.
If you are heterosexual, and perceive yourself as a true
"progressive", then you would have no qualms in taking up this
noble banner of Homophile Liberation in the ways I have
suggested...else you, too, have blood on your hands. But if
heteros at large still refuse to see this as their fight,
too...we homosexuals can flood the straight bars, clubs, and
other hetero hangouts. Our presence, with pink triangles
emblazoned on our shirts and jackets, will turn these straight
clubs into targets of the Army of God and their ilk. Then, of
course, we'll have a lot more allies in the resistance--albeit
unwilling.
Be it known that I am God's Son. Be it known that I am
proudly homosexual, that I am a Christian who respects all
other beliefs as equal, that I presently go by the name
Ezekiel Krahlin (formerly Gene Catalano). Be it also known
that I propose the new label "Thracian" over "gay male," to
symbolize the new-found empowerment of the homophile community
in this century's closing decade. The word "gay" perpetuates
a stereotype of ourselves as flighty, emotional, and
frivolous...not to be taken seriously, as a citizen, as a
human being, or as anything else! (Surely, women have a
similar complaint against male chauvanists.)
"Lesbian" is a beautiful term for the homosexual female;
as its name comes from a Greek Island with a rich, classical
history. The region of Thrace also has a great history, and
likewise plays an honored role in Hellenic culture...hence I
coin the term "Thracian" for those who are commonly thought of
as "gay male". Ancient Greeks first called their northern
neighbors "Thracians," and later, "Macedonians"...the people
from whom arose Alexander The Great. "Hellenic" can be the
general term for both homophile women and men, who are sick of
the belittling and ineffectual descriptor, "gay". This caps a
nice balance on the other two Greek words, to form an elegant
triad: Hellenic, Lesbian, Thracian. It also does away with
the chauvanistic stance of using "Gay" to represent both male
and female members, as well as males only. (Credit for the
idea of "Hellenic" to replace "Gay" goes to Fireweaver, an
Internet friend.)
Heterosexism, chauvinism, misogyny, mysandry, homophobia,
pedophilia, racism, and bestiality are all blasphemies in God's
eyes, and in mine, and in the eyes of all good people. Under this
inspiration, I declare Northern California a safe haven, and
demand protection by the United Nations Global Peacekeepers. I
also call for the secession of this region, and its establishment as a
government solely for and by Hellenes...where all beliefs are to be
equally respected. Let this new nation be named "Athenia," to
honor woman's suffrage as well as symbolize wisdom and valor. As
a body politik, we are as the victorious David against Goliath: the
giant of homophobia shall be toppled and slain in our time.
Let it also be known that not every gay person is a
friend. Like any group of human beings, they have their ranks
of evil forces. True hearts are few and far between...love
and be constant to such friends--if indeed you have even
one--for you are well blessed. For wherever there are two
kindred hearts, there Your Angel will be also, in spirit. Do
not judge any person by any category (such as gay or hetero,
Jew or Christian, ugly or handsome, poor or rich, white or
black, etc.) But do judge her by what comes from the heart, as
expressed in words and deeds.
Civilization (for what it's worth) is about to go
berserk; the capitalist world as we know it is doomed. I
trust that those whom I can reach through this letter, already
are taking action. If you are wicked (homophobic), it is not
yet too late to change. I stand by you in prayer, and hope
you will join the valorous. For until the last enemy is fallen, it
is my duty to fight for every lost soul until the final moment.
Yes, I pray most ardently for the lost, not for the risen.
In closing, I humbly attempt to give solace to my
Hellenic sisters and brothers, with this quote from Psalm 35
(1-8):
