Live coverage of Everest climb

If a carpenter, a registered nurse, a ski instructor and a teacher
reach the summit of Mount Everest today, they'll do it on live TV. The
Outdoor Life Network (Time Warner Ch. 122) plans to broadcast the last
leg of their ascent starting around 3:30 p.m. - as long as the weather
holds.

The broadcast is part of the adventure series "Global Extremes." Since
January, the show has followed an original 50 contestants, including
woodworker Jesse Rickert, through a series of endurance challenges
that included walking through Africa's Kalahari Desert and
rock-climbing in Iceland. Only four remain to attempt the final climb.
Each will get $50,000 for making it to the show's final challenge.

Yeah, I meant to mention this a couple of days ago! Evidently a Chinese
team sent live coverage of their summit success yesterday. OLN is also
available on DirecTV on ch. 608, and on Dish Network on ch. 151. Also,
because it's a Canadian station, it's available on Canadian cable and
satellite TV. Even if they don't make it all the way to the top (and
I hope they do), the Global Extremes team should be interesting to
watch as they slog their way up the mountain.

An update from OLN: The Global Extremes team won't be trying for
the summit today. The climbing leaders decided to help five climbers
from another expedition who were stranded above 27,000 feet after
nightfall. So the group is retreating to Camp III to rest up. They
hope to try again on Friday or Saturday.

Hmm.. must be a for-pay channel? There is no ch 151 on my Dish with
the "Top 100"; there is a 150 (SPEED) and the next is 153 (OTDCH?)
which is in red (meaning it's a subscription channel that hasn't been
turned on).

Everything on Dish and DirecTV is a for-pay channel. :-)

That's interesting. On my DirecTV receivers, I can see guide information
for all channels (except ones that are in out-of-area spotbeams). I guess
the same isn't true of Dish.
