Eurodicautom for EU-translators only?

que se organizan en mi Facultad de Las Palmas, y ha venido uno de los
terminólogos responsables del Eurodicautom, Pollux Hernúñez
(http://europa.eu.int/eurodicautom/contact.jsp). Y dijo eso, que debido a la
gran avalancha de preguntas en el servicio (más de 200 mil; la máquina
aguanta 160 mil), se ha optado por cerrarlo definitivamente el no de marzo,
en principio, porque a veces se bloquea (aunque dijo que no suele pasar en
Europa...). Y añadió dos cosas:
1. Es posible que se prorrogue esa fecha porque de aquí a marzo no van a
tener tiempo de terminar el objetivo en el que están inmersos: agrupar
todas las bases
de datos (Euterpe, Tis, etc.) en una para que sea más completo y siempre se
acuda al mismo
lugar. Pero por vía Intranet; es decir, que solo tendrían acceso a ello los
traductores intérpretes de la UE.
2. Si algún representante político levanta la mano y dice que el
Eurodicautom lo pagan todos los europeos y es un servicio muy bueno y casi
imprescindible para traductores, estudiantes, etc., el Eurodicautom, y
luego la nueva base terminológica (no sé si se seguirá llamando
Eurodicautom o tendría un nombre nuevo), seguiría siendo público. Eso
espero. A ver qué pasa, pero, como lo quiten, creo que habría que hacer
algo. O antes de que nos dejen sin el servicio.

This text says that a E.U.-terminologist came to the University of Las
Palmas on the occasion of the Third Reunion of Young Translators with the
message that the EU-databases are going to be regrouped into one database.
So far, so good, but it also mentions that in the near future (March 2003 -
it may be later because the aim of regrouping terminological databases may
take time) Eurodicautom is going to be accessible for E.U.-translators only.
The reason being that due to their are too many consultations per day: The
system can stand up to 160.000 per day, now it has to put up with 200.000
From my own experience: Eurodicautom does not give an exact answer to many
questions, but it has often pointed in the direction, where you have to look
and has been of great help. No more access to Eurodicautom will mean a
serious drawback for terminologists, students of translation and
freelancers.
The young student asks that you approach your M.P./political representative
to do something about that and to point out that the database is paid for by
the European taxpayor and has to remain public.
