This is the highest asking price for an Eico HF-81 on record. Congratulations
on making it into the Guinness Book of HiFi records.

Actually the Australians own the record on this one c.1993. Nigel Lambley
of Perth had one out there for $600 AU (~$425 US) w/o warranty!

I saw one of these in Atlanta at the Antique Radio spap-meet a few
months ago...the guy wanted $30 for it. It did need cleaning up be he
had all the original manuals and stuff.

And I picked one up in mint condition at a thrift store last year for
$20. It's a really nice sounding piece (love those EL84s) but it is not
worth $350, even with free shipping.

And it's worth twenty. Maybe.

I have been reading this thread concerning the Eico HF-81 for $350.
There have been replies knocking the guy who is asking that much for the
amp and replies from people who think that the Eico is only worth $20 to
$30. But if someone wants to ask $350, so be it. I agree that the
"market" value of the HF-81 is realistically between $80 and $175.

I can vouch for the fact that the HF-81 is a very special amp (within
its 20 watt per channel power limita). I had one about a year ago and
liked it very much. In fact, I recently tried to get another one, and
had to settle for a Scott 299 instead. The Scott is better built and
better looking, but the Eico was better sounding--especially in the area
of soundstage size. When I owned my Eico, I demoed a pair of speakers
for a friend and he asked me if I had a surround sound system on. The
soundstage was that enveloping!

Hell, maybe it IS worth $350?!?!

Hi John,

Well, it seems you've got yourself a chance to buy another Eico HF-81;
and for ONLY $350. Such a deal!

There is no question in my mind that this is a nice sounding integrated,
since I have one. I think however that you missed the point that I and
others were trying to make. This amp has been available in the 20-30
dollar range.

Now I have to ask you, how would you have felt had you just spent $350
on one of these only to turn around and find them selling in the $30
range? Not very well I bet.

But, of course, you are a regular seller of audio equipment on the
internet and it might be beneficial to someone in your position to allow
this kind of pricing to go unchallenged. But for a newbie, or anyone
else for that matter, getting burned can ruin your whole day.

Audio is supposed to be an enjoyable hobby and I believe the purpose of
rec.audio newsgroups are to allow us the means to enjoy it. Furthermore,
this is the 'Information Age' and I think that it is only right to
provide people with correct information. It's as simple as that.

So, John, did you buy the HF-81 yet?

Regards,

I can attest to the fine sound of vintage Eicos. I use a pair of HF-35's
as my reference amps. In fact, when my dealer hooks them up in his
showroom to audition different speakers for me, people start looking away
from the shiny new tube gear on the floor costing xtimes as much, and ask
what the hell that glowing scrap metal is on the ground producing such a
wondrous sound :)

$350 sounds steep for the 81, unless the whole thing has been reworked to
spec, etc. My 35's have been totally rewired, caps replaced, Vitamin Q's
dropped in, and boy oh boy... but it did cost me a few bucks to get the
work done right.

worth every penny...

Well, I also have been following this thread with some interest, as I am
another happy HF-81 user. They really are nice-sounding amps. As for
price, I'd LOVE to find another at $20-50. $350? Well, love has a
price, but I don't think it's quite that high.

I will buy all the EICO hf81 amps that anyone is selling for $100 US.
lets go folks.
That is in my experience with tube equipment, <over 1000 so far> the nicest
stock amp ever built...actually eclipsing a marantz7 pre with an 8b.
it you havent heard both, side by side, recapped, then dont waste your breath
flaming me.
the only thing the EICO needed was a copper plate seperating the rectifier
tubes from the curcuitry, and nearby tubes.
I know of collectors paying....wait for it......$1000 for that amp.
so ...get me those big old piles of 20 and 30$$ amps, and make yourself some
cash!!!
you dont think they are worth $350, then you should be happy to sell me your
old ones, at a healthy 300% profit.
I will pay the shipping.
anyone checked the price of chassis, and transformers, and brass etching these
days?

Hi, Larry:

I have an HF-81 which is not in very good condition. You might be able to
restore it and get it working again. This one has a broken "bat", or switch
on the back side of the main volume control. Scruffy, not too clean, but hey,
it's reasonably priced, if I can find all the screws and put it back together
again.

If you don't want it, others might. $25 plus shipping.

Sorry, folks, but the HF-81 has been "claimed".
