I also had a question for the netters: I am still relatively new to UNIX.
I wish to put Usenet newsgroups on my 8-bit BBS's. I don't think anybody's
tried this before (if anybody has, please e-mail me!). I can handle the 8-
bit end of it, but am totally lost on the UNIX side. I used to run a network
of Carina I boards many years ago, so I understand in general how I want to
do it, but need some help. Namely, how do I:
Post a news message to a given group, from a file which has been uploaded
with, say, X-Modem 1K. The name in the From: line must somehow be changed
to the BBS user leaving the message, so e-mail will get to the right user
on the BBS. I have the same question regarding sending mail and am quite
lost on reading mail. As far as x-ferring messages, I have that completely
figured out: I will use fgrep on the active file to determine the highest
message in a given newsgroup, then send each 'new' file directly from the news
directory with X-Modem 1K or y-batch.

Here's something that's from even earlier than 1991, that's still on-line <http://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/1/pg1-images.html>
I notice that only two NYC BBSs were listed. In 1991, there were
plenty more than that.
