Hi,

I just bought a Samsung Q10, a really nice and slick subnotebook.
Unfortunately I don't have a clue how to get debian on it.

It boots fine from the woody cd-rom and let's me format the drives etc.,
but when it comes down to load kernel modules it doesn't know where to turn
to. When issuing "mount" I don't see the cdrom connected(?) by firewire. I
haven't been able to google something useful.

I am completly willing to download an image of unstable it that would
help?

Do I have to fallback to Knoppix or Redhat? Linux-laptop.net seems to
suggest that.

But if Knoppix is up to the job, why shouldn't work this with debian... ?

Any help is strongly appreciated...

Cheers,
Mariano

If I understand correctly, you are installing from an external
(firewire) cd-rom. When you get to the loading modules step, you need
to read data from the cd-rom, but don't have support for it yet. You
could try to see if knoppix supports the drive, and then see what
modules are loaded. Whatever information you could get from a llinux
system that works with that drive could be helpful in setting it up in
debian. Also, you could try installing from a different source. You
could do a network install or load the modules you need from a floppy.

To provide any more specific help, I would need to know more about the
drive you are trying to get support for. Perhaps someone else on list
knows more about firewire drives than I do though.

Exactly. Actually it happens when "Installation of Kernel and Modules"-Step.
When I select this step the installer asks me from which media I'd like to
load the kernel etc. Usually (with other systems) I am not queried for the
media. The available options include floppy drives (which I don't have), the hd
(which is empty) and "mounted", the already mounted fs ... The installation
media is not among the options.
I don't know if that is of any interest, but mount gets me that:
/dev/ram0 on / type ext2 (rw)
/proc on /proc type proc (rw)
/dev/hda3 on /target type reiserfs (rw)

Thanks for giving directions. I am downloading knoppix at the moment and
will feed back later.

I tried that already, but with not much of a success.
First I tried the net installer for sarge/sid. It started out fine and I was
already wgetting all the neccessary stuff, but after no matter what module
selection I do (tried a couple of them) I always run in this kind of errors:

/home/martin/projects/debian-installer/tools/cdebconf/src/frontend.c:133
| (grondend_new): Cannot load frontend module
| /usr/lib/cdebconf/frontend/newt.so: libnewt.so.0.50:

Actually this is not from my output, but from google, but is pretty
accurate. It always complains about
/home/martin/projects/debian-installer/tools/cdebconf/src/frontend.c:133 and then complains about different modules. I tried
sarge and sid.
The website says the installer is just for testing purposes anyway. So I
figured it is too much to ask for help with it...

I also downloaded two unofficial images which I understood would be
netinstallers (woody-i386.iso) and (bootbf2.4), but they work just like the ordinary
installation,

How do I know what drive it is? lspci is not available, but /proc/pci gives
me something like this:
Bus 2, device 3, function 1:
Firewire (IEEE1394): PCI device 1180:0551 (Ricoh Co Ltd) (rev 0)
IRQ 11.
etc....

I'll feedback when I downloaded Knoppix, which is likely to be ended tonight
(CET).

Is this the right mailing list or should I go to debian-user?

Cheers,
Mariano

Try if you can load the following modules (from debinst or the
commandline)

ohci1394
ieee1394
sbp2
sr-mod

This might help... (though i'm not sure, as I don't have bootable
firewire hardware)

Hi Mark,

how do I do that?

I am not sure what you mean by "debinst"... Is that the installer? The
installer won't let me "load and configure of driver modules (translated from
the german output). It says I should first install them ;-) Which I don't know
how without the ieee1394 driver.

When changing to a console and issueing: "modprobe xyz" I just get
"modprobe: Can't locate module xyz".

When launching the install I go for the bf24 selection. Is this ok?

Even if I can download Knoppix and find out what the module is named ...
how would I use that information?

You are the best test person for the testing boot-floppies with Firewire
source support. Please get the netinst CD image from:

http://people.debian.org/~blade/bf3024/

and report the results!

> I am completly willing to download an image of unstable it that would

Using Unstable is not possible "from scratch". You should install a
plain Woody base, and before running dselect or tasksel (what the
base-config wizard suggests after reboot), change to the second console,
login as root and run
perl -pe -'s/stable/unstable/' -i /etc/apt/sources.list

> But if Knoppix is up to the job, why shouldn't work this with debian... ?

Because we do not release a new boot-floppies release every two weeks
and do not always have time to implement all the user wishes or there
are some technical limitations.

Gruss/Regards,

Sorry, but what exactly do I need to get? The floppy images are for me, are
they? I just have a firewire cdrom, not a floppy.

Should I get something from this directory?
http://people.debian.org/~blade/boot-floppies/netinst-full-pre/
Which iso-image? (Don't have CDRW and like to know first ;-)

I downloaded
http://people.debian.org/~blade/boot-floppies/netinst-full-pre/bootbf2.4.iso and selected "linux" from the initial prompt ...

The problems remained the same, as I am still asked from what medium I want
to install the system from and the options just include "/dev/fd0 /dev/fd1
and mounted", but when using lsmod I can see sbp2, ohci1394, iee1394,
usb-storage, usb-uhci, and usbcore, which I believe haven't been there with the old
version.
I guess I will have to mount the devices some way now?

You would need a way to get that particular module onto the system. You
said earlier that you tried a net install, so I am assuming that you
have networking set up. You could boot with knoppix, and find a URL to
the module you need. (If you can't find it online anywhere, let me know
and I'll put it up). Then start the debian install and switch to a
console. Use wget to download the module you need and put it into the
appropriate place in /lib/modules. This is definitely an inelegant
solution though. You should probably try the boot floppies with
firewire support that was mentioned elsewhere before doing it this way.

The far right column of the table is "Netinst-Images and others". You
can burn those to a cd-rom. Boot-floppies is a bit of a misnomer in
that case.

That is correct.

I would try this one:
http://people.debian.org/~blade/boot-floppies/netinst-full-pre/bootbf2.4.iso

Hallo Eduard,

I've tried that. Now lsmod shows me that there are usb modules, ieee1394,
sbp2 loaded, which is serious progress, still it doesn't mount them and I
don't know how to do that by hand. Actually I tried to mount /dev/sd0 sd1 sda
sda0 sda1 sbp2(or similar) ... with no success. Any idea? Anything I can watch
out for? /var/log/messages doesn't contain anything useful.

The funny thing is that meanwhile I tried Knoppix 3.1. But this doesn't
work either. I get "Can't find KNOPPIX filesystem." and am back at a "very
limited" shell. lsmod doesn't return any result, insmod ieee1394 returns "no
module by that name found" and mount triggers a Kernel panic. (FAT: bogus logical
sector size 0).

The other problem is that I have a problem with the net installer. The
"official" one yields in errors (see other posting) and I've also seen at
debian.org that you've got one. The link just got me to the same page as for the
bootbf2.4.iso. Is this also a net installer? If so, how do I use the net-part
of it?

Bye,
Mariano

Well, currently I do not have a single (good) idea. My expectation was
that the scsi driver would recognice that device as a SCSI cdrom and
lisist it in the file /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info. If it would do, the
installer also would offer it in the medium chooser. But something seems
to go wrong, do not ask me what.

Well, if someone in Germany (around Karlsruhe or Kaiserslautern) can
borrow a firewire CDROM drive, I could try to find a solution, but
without hardware it is hard...

Gruss/Regards,
Eduard.

Hi Eduard,

I'll can you send you mine by Deutsche Post Paketdienst if you give me
your address. The only problem is that I am about to leave for a short
vacation and would need to send it to you tonight, so I would need your address
soon, otherwise I'll send it to you next week.

I would also be happy to install it with the netinstaller, but didn't have
any success with that too:

still like, send you my cdrom afterwards.

Well, I personally have a firewire cdrw drive....
just a guess but I had to add it to the scsi bus manually with scsiadd....
(lately it works without doing it but it is worth a try, I think)
...but i never tried to install from it since I have an integrated cdrom
drive and also i cannot boot from my cdrw.....

I hope it helps...
