Hello all..

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with windshield (auto) repair. I
have a crack in my windshield, and I wonder if it's more economical (and
feasible) to have it repaired vs. replaced.

I was looking for info such as cost, and who around here is reliable.

I'd like to hear your experiences.. both positive and negative!

Thanks!
Mo

You don't say where you are.
There's a very good place in Merrifield, along Lee Highway (US
29), just West of Gallows Road, on the left going out, called
I think Cherry something. We've had two or three jobs done
there over the years, and always been well pleased.
All our work was completely paid for by out auto insurance
(check yours! I wouldn't've expected that.), and they billed
the insurance company, so I barely noticed and don't remember
the cost. But the work was done right the first time, on
time.

Every insurance policy I've had has had windshield replacement as part of
the coverage--without any deductible. That's because it's usually a safety
issue, and (in VA, at least), your car can't pass inspection if there's a
crack in the field of view.

The last two windshields I had replaced (one a year ago and another about
10 years ago) were both done in my driveway at appointment times that were
kept to the minute. The replacement in both cases took less than an hour.
So, it was pretty painless. The guy even peeled off and successfully
reapplied my county and inspection stickers. Best of all, all of the little
scratches and blemishes I'd been putting up with, disappeared. It was like
getting a new pair of glasses.

Damage repair can be a little faster. However, the repair is only cosmetic.
If there is a weakness in the glass--due to a crack or a chip--the repair
won't make the glass any safer. Replacement, however, will. For that
reason, some insurance companies will pay for replacement, but not for
repair.

I don't remember the names of the companies that did the repair. In both
cases, the insurance company gave me some names.
