FIRST CALL FOR VOTES (of 2)
rec.skiing reorganization

Newsgroups lines:
rec.skiing.alpine downhill skiing technique, equip., etc.
rec.skiing.nordic X-C skiing technique, equip., etc.
rec.skiing.snowboard snowboarding technique, equip., etc.
rec.skiing.places places to ski, incl. snow cond., facilities, etc.

Votes must be received by 23:59:59 UTC, 7 March 1994.

This vote is being conducted by a neutral third party. For voting
questions only contact rdip...@qualcomm.com. For questions about the
proposed group contact Crispin Cowan <cri...@csd.uwo.ca>.

CHARTER

rec.skiing.alpine:
This group is for the discussion of equipment, techniques, and issues
relating to alpine ("downhill") skiing.

rec.skiing.nordic:
This group is for the discussion of equipment, techniques, and issues
relating to nordic ("XC" or "Cross-Country") skiing.

rec.skiing.snowboard:
This group is for the discussion of equipment, techniques, and issues
relating to snowboard skiing ("snowboarding").

rec.skiing.places:
For the discussion of the merrits of various places to ski, including
but not limited to:
-current snow conditions
-grooming practicies
-weather
-lift equipment
-restaurants & accomodations
-social setting
-crowding
-etc.
rec.skiing.places is for places to do all kinds of skiing, downhill,
nordic, snowboard, backcountry, whatever, if the topic is the quality
of the place.

rec.skiing.announce:
Consistent with present net-practice, this is the low-volume, moderated
group for announcements. It will carry the periodic posting of the
FAQ, race & other competition results, and possibly some selected
automated snow reports. Glen Baker (gl...@sr.hp.com), present
maintainer of the rec.skiing FAQ, has volunteered to moderate
rec.skiing.announce.

rec.skiing removal:
The above groups are supposed to replace the need for rec.skiing. If
users still feel the need for a miscelaneous skiing group, then they
should vote "NO" to removing rec.skiing, and it will become a
miscelaneous grab bag for topics that don't fit in the above
catagories.

However, if rec.skiing is removed, many topics that relate to more than
one of the above groups can be freely cross-posted. For instance,
discussion on the state of relations between snowboarders and skiers
could be cross-posted to rec.skiing.alpine and rec.skiing.snowboard,
and additionally cross-posted to rec.skiing.places if it related
specifically to a social problem at a particular resort.

Why is this reorganization being proposed? Because the volume on
rec.skiing in the winter is well over 100 messages a day, which can be
difficult to deal with. Splitting the traffic into sub-groups will
allow readers to more easily select and prune their reading according
to relevance to their interests.

below the bottom "-=-=-=-" line. Do not erase anything between these

Afore anyone jumps to the conlcusion that I am trying to vote via
the newsgroups, don't worry, I know and used the proper drill. But
there is something I wish to state about the offered options. NOT
complaining (since everything is going by the rule), but stating a
subjective view.

[yes ] rec.skiing removal
[yes ] rec.skiing.alpine
[yes ] rec.skiing.announce (moderated)
[yes ] rec.skiing.nordic
[abstain ] rec.skiing.places
[no ] rec.skiing.snowboard

Reason for my one no vote. The suggested snowboard newsgroup is
based on too narrow an outlook and thus superfluous. It should be
covered by rec.skiing.alpine.
Besides I would have prefered rec.skiing.downhill to
rec.skiing.alpine. There is a slight predjudice in the word
'alpine' about the exact nature and the location of the terrain.
Downhill would have been more neutral and more general. But I am
familiar with the voting procedures. The official discussion is
over, and that is that. However, it does not prevent me from
stating that I am not happy with the alternatives finally offered.

Potential followups directed to news.groups.

All the best, Timo

Well, Timo, I'm sure glad that you had this opinion and posted to
rec.skiing. I don't know the procedures and I would've missed the
vote. Thanks.

Here's my vote:

[yes ] rec.skiing removal
[yes ] rec.skiing.alpine
[yes ] rec.skiing.announce (moderated)
[yes ] rec.skiing.nordic

[yes ] rec.skiing.places
[yes ] rec.skiing.snowboard

I'm sorry to ask but I didn't follow the discussion.
Which newsgroup will be for the discussions relating Telemark skiing?
Although this belongs to nordic skiing, Telemark has now become more of a
downhill type of skiing.

The discussion seemed to lead toward: discussions of telemarking at
resorts will be in .alpine ("What kind of skis should I get for lift-served
telemarking?"), discussions of telemarking in the backcountry
will be in .nordic, discussions of telemarking in general (technique,
etc.) will be in .nordic, possibly crossposted to .alpine.
