Just completed the CompTIA Linux+ certification (I passed) and have the
following comments for anyone considering taking the exam:

First, let me note that the exam is specifically geared toward beginner
level users (6 months or less experience). As such, it should focus on
fundamentals, and nothing but fundamentals,IMO. To some extent, it does
this, but there were also numerous questions that I would not expect a
beginner to know, e.g. regarding unusual hardware problems. Additional
examples of this included a question on sendmail configuration, another on
troubleshooting BIND, and another on reconfiguring (or adding a second?) a
IP address to your NIC. The latter appeared to be using incorrect
syntax--at least I did not recognize it, nor was I able to locate anything
resembling it in the man page (ifconfig) afterwards.

Overall, the exam was not difficult, but I've been using Linux for over 2
years (in a non-professional capacity). I thought the exam asked a few too
many questions that I would not expect a beginner to know, and a few that
were too obvious, even for a beginner. A few questions seemed poorly
worded, or too artificial. Overall, the exam felt more like a "beta"
version than a finished product. In all, there were 95 questions and the
examinee is given 2 hours to complete the exam, which seemed more time than
should have been alloted. I completed the exam in less than an hour.

Perhaps the worse aspect of the exam was that you were forced to fill out a
survey. In addition, you were forced to agree to give CompTIA rights to
publish all personal information it had collected from you, rights to your
firstborn, etc. I entered false information and told the person at the
front desk what I thought about their policy.
