Hello!
We are going to a concert this weekend at the Old Town School of Folk
Music, 4544 N. Lincoln (near Wilson). Can anyone suggest any good eateries
in that vicinity.

got a price range? She She is almost right across the street. we liked
the food there a lot when we ate there about a month ago, but it's not
the cheapest meal in town.

raspberry-basil sorbet - it sounds odd but is delicious.

Café Selmarie also has good eats and the bonus of a fantastic assortment of
pastries for dessert.

(I'm still bummed out on the menu changes at the Daily Bar & Grill - used to
have great comfort food and home-made ice cream. Now it seems that its just
standard bar fare just like a thousand other places, although the pot pie is
good)

If you're going to see David Johanssen then I'll see you there. We're
eating at the Chicago Brauhaus in Lincoln Square, just north of OTSOFM.
Big food, big beer, the only place I've ordered steak tartare off of the
menu.

My favorite in that neighborhood is Spoon. It's a hole-in-the-wall, but
I've never had a bad dish there.

Very "chic" kinda place -- small, with a bar in the back (garden in the back in
season). Not cheap -- about $50 + per person...popular with the lesbigay
community. IIRC one of the owners used to work at Tomboy in Andersonville....

Reservations a must.

CHICAGO magazine did a good review of them this last July. It's on
google.com....

Are you thinking of Roseded? Roseded is on the north side of Lincoln
where Lincoln turns west into Western at 4700 north. Roseded has good
basic Thai in simple, but clean, surroundings. Inexpensive, BYOB.

You may also be thinking of Opart Thai House, I prefer Roseded.

Trent,

Have you tried the liver dumpling soup? Brauhaus has great liver
dumpling soup, I like to go there once in a while sit at the bar sip a
DAB and eat a bowl of liver dumpling soup, great on a very cold day.
The occasional live music is a treat as well, typically not the most
polished band in the world, but everyone sure has a good time.

> the only place I've ordered steak tartare off of the menu.

You are a brave man, a pound of bacon and a liter of Jolt cola for
breakfast 5 days a week and now steak tartare, it's been many a year
since I have had steak tartare. Coarse chopped raw beef, raw egg,
anchovy, dark rye and onion, man was that good.

I order (and we cook at home) most everything rare to medium rare,
beef, lamb, fish, duck breast, even pork, but raw beef would be
pushing it these days, at least for me. The exception to rare is
chicken, no underdone chicken for me.

Heck, I can remember as a kid opening up a package of hamburger meat
on the way home from the store and taking a bite or two. If a kid did
that today his mother would take him to the emergency room to have his
stomach pumped.

Enjoy,

<snip>

Butch,

I am a fan of La Bocca Della Verita, both that and their sister
restaurant Pizza DOC. The potential problem with La Boca is that it
might be difficult to keep within Xetr's $25 per person price range.

In addition to La Bocca and the other good suggestions that Xetr has
received I would suggest Simplon Orient Express. Simplon Orient
Express derives it's name from the train that runs from London to
Istanbul and has dishes from many countries with an emphasis on
Serbia.

Simplon has an interesting family style dining option for $14 per
person that offers a sampling of many dishes. I had originally gone
there after reading a World Eats column about cevapcici which is a
garlicky grilled sausage made with beef, lamb and/or veal, but have
since gone back with my wife and friends for fun, casual meals.

One of the charms of the place is the owner, who is very Old World
European, and can be quite the raconteur. There is also music on the
weekends and some weeknights.

Speaking of cevapcici, the best cevapcici that I found were at
Bosanski Okusi, which seems more like a place for Serbs to get
together, drink coffee and smoke cigarettes, than a restaurant, but
nonetheless, has excellent cevapcici. They are served on a pita shaped
slightly puffy bread with sour cream, red pepper spread (ajvar) and
onions, slightly greasy, but very good. The other place that was
mentioned in the article was Balkan Restaurant, but I have not been
there as of yet.

I have also purchased cevapcici at Lalich Delicatessen, a sausage shop
on Lawrence and Joe's sausage on Western, they are excellent grilled
over charcoal. Interestingly some cevapcici are made with a bit of
baking soda and this will make them puff up when grilling. Be careful
not to grill them too quickly, if they puff up and then deflate, so to
speak, they can become quite dense and develop a slightly bitter
taste. In this regard Joe's gets the nod, as they do not use baking
soda in their cevapcici, though I believe baking soda is traditional.

Enjoy,
Gary

My girlfriend took me there for my b-day two years ago. I was up for a
nice meal and the oom-pah band, instead it was a surprise, about fifteen
of our friends were waiting in the bar. There was a lot of menu
"exploration" that night. That is how I discovered the tartare and the
liver dumpling soup, as well a a few other goodies. We had a huge table
in the back with a great view of the band. Our only obstruction was the
alderman sitting with his cronies at the next table- and they were just
as lit as we were. I'm sitting there with my happy birthday
propeller-beanie, some stupid birthday t-shirt and half of the
restaurant singing happy birthday auf Deutsch. I would have been two
inches tall if I weren't laughing so hard.

On those really tough mornings I also throw the clock radio in the
bottom of the shower for a little "pick-me-up." ZZZZZZZAP! When I
lived in the Gold Coast we had Purtill's- always the freshest possible
meat. One of my neighbors made steak tartare every year for the
Christmas party. After the /second/ year I was hooked.

Mmmmm, rare pork. One of my friends in school was from a /huge/ hog
farm- he learned me good. Have no fear of undercooked pork. Chicken on
the otherhand... I'll leave that to the Colonel. Actually I make a
pretty mean roaster, but I'm really just cooking it so I can make soup.

In the suburbs. In Iowa they'd talk behind your back for not sharing-
good carnivores, they are.

I'm not much of a Thai fan, but I am a noodle fan so I do eat it. My
favorite is Roongpetch on Montrose. It's the standard stuff, but IMHO
the ingredients are fresher and they cook with less oil.

I learned from a chef friend of mine that you don't have to cook the fook out of
pork. I like mine "medium", even slightly pink -- it's much tastier and more
succulent (especially considering the low fat content of pork these days....).

Besides, when was the last time you heard of a case of trichinosis? IIRC, stats
show that a LOT more people get sick from bad chicken than from pork. Chicken is
a real breeding ground for all kinds of nasties -- this was in the news a whiles
back....

The foods not bad at Opart but the place is just dirty. I think they keep it
dark so you can't see the floor or the walls. One block south on the same
side of the street is Spoon Thai which is at least 2 notches up from Opart.
They have some of the best Tod Mun (Fried fish cakes) and Mie Krob_sp? which
has a passing resemblance to Rice Krispie treats. It's best when it's still
warm which is how they serve it.
