I recommend two books: Weapons and Fighting arts of Indonesia
by Donn Draeger (published by Charles E. Tuttle, 1972, 1992,
ISBN 0-8048-1716-2). You should still be able to locate a
paperback copy. A better one (IMO), but one VERY difficult
to find is "Pentjak - Silat: The Indonesian Fighting Art" by
Howard Alexander, Quintin Chambers, and Donn Draeger"
(published by Kodansha International Ltd., 1970, SBN (pre
ISBN) 87011-103-3).

Draeger's "Indonesian Fighting Arts" is good.

He also wrote one on Shantung Black Tiger that was more Javanese than
Chinese and same-o Phoenix Eye Fist. The practitioners and the setting
lead me to believe that they are more kuntao and silat than mainland
practice. I found them informative and instructive and expansive to my
own training.
There's a good short section in Haines 'Karate: It's History &
Traditions' on Indonesian art; some in Draegers other book 'Asian
Fighting Arts', many of the principles in Danny Inosantos' 'Filipino
Fighting Arts'(title ?) book are the same, 'Indonesian Fighting
Fundamentals' by Bob Orlando from Paladin is instructive and
informative.

Check out my page at: http://www.xs4all.nl/~avdeelen/pukulan.htm .
Look under Books, and maybe Henry De Thouars
has written something. He certainly published a few articles.

By the way, I have the Dutch translation of the above book by the great
Donn Draeger, and it is the best I have come across yet, but it is a very
basic, seventies introductory text.

I remember one book on Perisai Diri, but I don't remember if it was in
Dutch.

Sincerely,

Alex van Deelen
