I read recently a good study about the cyberpunk movement which you
may have missed. It's from the well-known S.F. writer Norman Spinrad
(author of Bug Jack Barron, Russian Spring, etc.) in his book "Science-
Fiction in the real world" which is really worth reading as a whole. The
study itself is called "The hard stuff" or something like that. I have it home
so if you're interested please e-mail me for more details.
Btw, if you're interested in the beginings of the cyberpunk wave, you should
read "Dr.Adder" from K.W. Jeter written in 1978 but published only in 1984
(you can find it in Bluejay books). The author himself denies it's cyberpunk,
but I think you can find the really basic cyberpunk preoccupations in it...

Actually, I think it was written in '72 (I'll check when I get home; I don't
have my copy here at work).

His other books (_Glass_Hammer_ & _Beyond_Horizontal_) are also quite good.

Yeah I think you're right. "Dr. Adder" was written around '72 when K.W. Jeter
was in Berkeley. It is the postfacce by Philip K. Dick that was written in '78.
As you say, his other books are *really* good. You may have passed over these:
-Death Arms, Morrigan (1987)
-Infernal Devices, St. Martin's
-Madlands, St. Martin's
-etc..
K.W. Jeter wrote also some good horror books (The Dark Seeker was selected
for the Philip K. Dick award) but I don't know if anyone reading this newsgroup
wants to hear about it... You can read (if you find them) some of his early
writings published in Laser Books (mid '70s).
Well, anyone interested in K.W. Jeter or his writings can e-mail me for more
informations...

On a side note, if you're a real tech weenie, check out COMPUTERS UNDER
ATTACK: intruders, WORMS AND VIRUSES, edit. Peter J Denning. It has various
articles snarfed from about 1984 to 1989. It describes the robert t morris
virus (the misnamed Internet 'worm' that blogged the net over 4 years ago).
This is a must-read for technological background into Internet, as well as PC
and network security measures.
