And if you think that's bad, wait until we get the "Homecoming" episode
with Ricky and Bianca. Saw in the paper the sob story about his career
being on the slide but how much better her's has been because she's
starred in "Macready and Daughter" (which, IIRC, was canned after one
series - which they failed to mention) and released an exercise video
(one of about 20 released in Xmas week, I kid you not)

The article must've been written by someone from the BBC because it said
how they think the public can't wait to see the magic of the couple
again.

Crap. Is there anyone who wants to see those two again?

It's got a *lot* worse since they tried to force out four episodes a week.

It's like making a two hour film in seven days, and it can't be done. The
scripts are amateurish, the acting is appalling (bar Perry Fenwick, who is
great, but the material given him in EE does him no justice) and the less
said about the direction the better.

Frankly, they'd be better to go back to two, or even one episode a week.

Eastenders really is a programme past its sell by date. Its just that the BBC is trying to ram it down
everyones throats nowadays.

The problem is it won't be a soap then. If the program featured more action, less talking, less whingeing about
the same old issues again and again and had some meat to it I might start watching it. The trouble is these
days is that the BBC seems to favour tasteless, two-dimensional repetitive programmes where nothing happens you
haven't seen before.

Eastenders is not even representative of life of modern Britain today. Its so
fictitious, unoriginal and synthetic it makes Harlow look impressive. Infact
calling it Eastenders is inappropriate. The people from the East End nowadays
are nothing like those in Eastenders.

What I think is needed is a soap centring around middle class British people
who are generally happy and actually have jobs and reasonably good ones to say
the least.

That's an awkward blanket statement, in that there /are/ pockets of London
that are like that. Although, I agree that it's hardly representative of
the whole East End.

I'm sure one or two are. ;-)

Happy people in a soap sounds like a non-starter. Where will the issues
come from? And besides, properous, middle class areas are full of misery.
No more or less than areas of a different "class".

"Middle class" can be a veil of deceit anyway. I live in one of those
neighbourhoods and behind the front of two parents, two cars, a 4x4, a
double garage & two kids are mortgages, debt, and remortgage's. Families
living beyond their means with absolutely no place to go, but work
everyday...making them rather working class if you ask me. ;-)

I am not saying the people would be over the moon but they wouldn't be
complete misery guts like what presently appears on British soaps.

What I am saying is that they would have their problems and their dilemmas
but would be a lot more happy in general. More like in the Australian soaps
which IMO are - or used to be - not half as miserable as the ones from
Britain.

OK. I don't think that's class related. :-)

OMG, please no! Aussie Soaps = TOTALLY unrealistic kids TV. Certainly
Nobbers & Home and Away anyway. ;-) The reason they're so bloody happy
is because they're so flamin' false. The area where the real Ramsay Street
is located in Melbourne is the scourge of the city. Rife with hooligans
and general doorstep misery. Neighbours is hardly any more representative
of suburban Melbourne than Eastenders is of East London.

In fact Home and Away is set in the rather exclusive "Palm Beach" resort.
The rich persons playground. Realism? Put it this way, you couldn't
live in a house like Irenes if you worked in a diner, let alone if you
had half a dozen screaming foster kids to feed & clothe (and somehow,
even they manage to get designer gear)! ;-)

What we really need of course is LESS soaps. Regardless of where they
come from, they're mind-numbingly awful when they come in such quantity.
I'm rather looking forward to Brookside being removed next year if it's
ratings don't improve and hopefully it will be just a start. :-)

It signalled the entrance of "the son" who actually had something to do
in this episode (or some-one as it turned out, although how could he pull
her when he looked so fucking docile?), although he nearly didn't have
anything to do: as soon as he turned up, Rula Lenska said "Oi, business"
and ushered him out, or something similar.

Then there was a classic "Shaaaat aaaap!" from Henchmen 1.

Where do you get this information from? It doesn't come across at all as
obvious satire. I'm half tempted to write to EE and ask them because
it's not difficult to make it work. Crossroads manages it on a budget of
50p an episode for gods sake. ;-)

You are a philistine Zsa Zsa, just like the rest of the newsgroup that
didn't see the 'obvious' comedy. Ben has obviously been invited into the

Or The Vinnie Samways brothers as I prefer to think of them, since they
have a startling resemblance to ex Spurs player, Vinnie Samways.

Except that the BBC hardly shows cartoons nowadays. CBBC really has changed since the 1980s and mainly for the
worse.

Here's my tuppence on this weeks EastEnders (sorry if I'm going over
old ground here, but I'm sure Google have missed out a few posts):

- My thinking is that the only reason these episodes are on at all is
because this is the first year EastEnders in on four times a week. I'm
guessing each episode is filmed about a month or so in advance - this
week's episodes are being shown because no episodes were filmed over
Christmas week - normally the extra week's worth of filming would be
absorbed into the rest of Demember, but with the extra time to fill,
they preferred to pre-record some episodes earlier - using just the
one regular cast member, and shove those on while the rest of the cast
retire for the festivities (or, of course, panto). That would explain
why all of the other storylines were left up in the air while Peggy
buggers off to Spain for a bit.

- Someone at the Beeb found a whole stack of Eldorado scripts in a
skip, and thought that they may as well use them. Or the Beeb are
planning to bring Eldorado back by stealth, and these are the pilot
episodes.

- Blimey, when they replaced Daniella Westbrook's septum, they just
kept on replacing bits of her, didn't they? What's that? Different
actress? Oh, right.

- This weeks episodes have been incredibly bad, haven't they? I've
only recently been re-converted to EastEnders since about November (I
hadn't watched it for months, but recently I've been hooked - and I
generally loathe soap operas), hope it isn't becoming crap again.

- Nice to see the Frank Butcher method-acting-method is still intact -
if anything important happens, look down and grip the bridge of your
nose between thumb and forefinger, while muttering in purest mockney.
Me old sparrow.

Cheers,
Mark.

Damn, I hope so. The repeats on UK Gold are great.

The other day there was an uneasy exchange of dialogue between Fizz and
Maria in a street, while a fly crawled up Fizz's face and she tried to
ignore it.

And of course, the doctor from Eldorado played the nightclub owner in
Eastenders this week.

Spookily enough, doesn't Vinny Samways still play in Spain - for
Oviedo or someone like that? Funniest bit of last night's: Frank
shouting 'Get aaaaaht the way you Spanish pilchard!' - that works on
so many levels.

Cheers,

Who else was in it?. I remember Julie Covington I think, then , as you say,
Rula Lenska, and There was another one, cant remember the name.(I think she
appeared later on in 'bad girls'..or was it 'widows'?'..)

strawberry one), shirley? (sorry Lee, I just can't help it!!!)

Tell us the songs on the album, my memories may come flooding back!!!

You sure about that? I'm sure I saw it a few months ago on one of the UK
channels (Gold or Drama?).

As Tripitaka has already pointed out, the other one was Charlotte
Cornwell.

Of course there was also the frightful Rox, who ruined the Little
Ladies and ended up shagging Brian of Nazareth.

Go damn! Had I got here earlier I could have impressed you with my
knowledge of the songs/albums. HUGE fan!!! Even bought the reissues
CD when they came out a couple of years ago (afters earching endlessly
for the vinyl since mine melted in a house fire about 5 years ago)

Can't wait for the DVDs!
