Hi,

We just got back some weeks ago from a vacation in
Italy. After sampling the stupendous gelati there,
we wanted to be able to eat more without having to
wait until we went all the way back to Amalfi. So
does anyone have a recommendation for the best gelato
in NYC? We tried what was available at the Bella Bate
bakery in Brooklyn, which makes great Italian pastries,
but the gelato there wasn't, to quote Congressman
Lazio in another context, the "real deal".

Thanks for any suggestions.

Good question--I have yet to find true gelato in New York.
They make it in Columbus, Ohio, of all places, but here?
Not quite. I am fond of Ciao Bella, when I can find it--it's
not perfect, but their banana is heavenly, and the blood
orange sorbetto is also quite good.

Remember, though, NY is a place where people
willingly eat Carvel. I read about it for 30 years,
and when I tried it, I could not believe how
thin and artificial it tasted. Yuck.

I love Carvel! I grew up on it, and even tho my tastes have evolved to
appreciate the finer things, like Dr. Mike's rich chocolate (possibly the
best chocolate ice cream I've ever had) and fabulous gelato in Milan, I
still love a good chocolate brown bonnet.

I can't recommend good gelato in New York, but Cafe La Fortuna makes a
fabulous chocolate ice. Like granita di ciocolate. You can have it plain
or served in a tall glass of iced capuccino (decaf or "leaded"). They have
a nice garden seating area, and play opera indoors. 71st between Columbus
and CPW.
