Hello OS/2 net gurus..

I have just recently gotten SLIP access, and would like to take advantage
of it and my OS/2 DX2/66 to call in to my local host with X. Can anyone
tell me how to get started? ie. what to get, what NOT to do, etc...

I already have a 14.4 v.32bis modem, so that's taken care of.

Thanks in advance,

Well, now that we have gobs of "me too"s (DON'T DO THAT ... BAD DOG ...
DOWN) I guess we can address the actual question.

First, you want to get IBM's TCP/IP v.2 for OS/2 with the X Server kit. I
also recommend the DOS/Windows kit. That's three products (Base, X
Server, DOS/Windows). The latter lets you run winsock clients. The
recommended vendor would be Indelible Blue Inc, of course.

Then get tcpstart.txt and slip2xv1.zip off ftp-os2.cdrom.com
(pub/os2/2_x/network). You may as well use the slip driver that comes
with the base tcpip suite, but slip2xv1 has some documentation in it that
will help you out.

You then install your tcp/ip suite per the docs. One installation snafu
is that it will tell you need laps; you don't. Laps is for network cards.
You will probably have to edit your config.sys file and add the INET and
IFNDISNL drivers.

The relevent lines from my config.sys are:
device=e:\tcpip\bin\inet.sys
DEVICE=e:\tcpip\bin\ifndisnl.sys
DEVICE=E:\TCPIP\BIN\VDOSTCP.VDD
DEVICE=E:\TCPIP\BIN\VDOSTCP.SYS
RUN=e:\tcpip\bin\CNTRL.EXE
RUN=E:\TCPIP\BIN\VDOSCTL.EXE

You will probably want to hack tcpip\bin\slipup.cmd, and then attach it to
slip, but to start with you should manually connect.

That's about it. A comment about slip and x, though. 14.4kbps is too
slow for "real" x. It's ok for xterm or something like that, but don't
get your hopes up about xdesktop or xmosaic or anything like that. If you
really want to have fun, try running IMSL's Exponent Graphics sample
programs ... downright painful! (It's not IMSL's fault; it's just that
real graphics plots have a *lot* of information and 14.4bps is actually
quite slow for real-time processing.)
