I like to use the kwikinf tool that comes with the toolkit, but
every time I start it, I get a message to the effect of "HELPNDX
not found". From the name, I gather it's an index of sorts or
all the INF files (or at least some of them), similar to what the
whatis and windex files are to man pages in unix.

Does anyone know how to create the index? Or otherwise, how to
avoid getting the dialog box every time kwikinf is started?

Thanks.

HELPNDX is an environment variable with a list of the *.ndx files separated
with plus signs. I have no idea what put it in my config.sys.
Probably the install of the toolkit.

Well, it runs ok for me in 16MB of RAM. I've not seen the above
error messages at all, tho' I have seen others when it couldn't
find the bookshelf directory or ndx files. You need bookshelf
and helpndx defined in config.sys, and the .ndx files somewhere
where they can be found (I'm not sure where, you'll have to check
the docs). There were problems with the 2.1 toolkit index files,
some of which were badly formatted. I used them with EPM, not
kwkndx, so I don't know if it also barfed. But if you look at
the files with an editor, the misformatted lines are pretty obvious.

Which version of the toolkit ? 2.0 ??? (At least, that is where this "error"
occured; it was because at that time kwikinf was compiled with MSC 6.0...)
I've never seen that problem with toolkit 2.1 and know of nobody.

If it is toolkit 2.0, this is my advice:
Don't use software that has been superceeded by newer versions
for quite some time now.

Seems as if the above applies as well. :-)

Try "dir /s *.ndx" (poor man's find)

KWIKINF and EPM are picky about case in the HELPNDX string.

My experience is: it works fine after using the install program.
When I had problems I always have done some changes by hand and usually
changed the case of the filenames.

Shouldn't be a problem in an OS that doesn't distinguish between case
in its filesystems but it is. :-(
