A virulent antibiotic-resistant form of the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, better known as staph, is rapidly spreading among Los Angeles gay men, baffling local physicians.
Since the fall of 2002, the number of gay men in Los Angeles County suffering from boils, inflammation and abscesses on their hands, legs and genitals has risen sharply, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Worrying doctors is the fact that the new strain of staph thwarts drugs like penicillin and other commonly used oral antibiotics, including the more powerful fluoroquinolones. This is forcing medical authorities to prescribe much more expensive drugs like Zyvox, and antibiotics taken intravenously, such as vancomycin, in order to treat the infections.
"The concern is this organism could spread to and cause disease in the community at large," infectious disease specialist Dr. Peter Ruane told the Times. "It seems to be able to attack normal skin in healthy people."
For years drug-resistant staph has been a problem in nursing homes and hospitals, but recently pockets of infection have been found outside medical institutions. At this point doctors aren't exactly sure how the infection is contracted, but some say the rising rate of infection among gay men indicate it may be passed by skin-to-skin contact at clubs or gyms, and during sex.
"It's serious because there seems to be a preponderance of cases in gay men," Dr. Robert Bolan, medical director at the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center, told the Gay.com/PlanetOut.com Network. "It has a lot of similarities to other epidemic infections in our community -- HIV, syphilis, hepatitis; it's the same old broken record story. You have a bacterial infection that can be easily transmitted from one person to another that can have serious consequences."
The county, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is trying to figure out how exactly the infection is spread in order to find a way to better combat it. Bolan and other front-line medical providers are being asked to track the number and severity of cases they see in their practices.
The exact number of infections for the city has not yet been determined. At the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center's clinic, there were six cases in December 2002, compared with none for the month of November. (January statistics were not available.)
Bolan said the majority of cases he has seen involve patients who also have HIV, but he added "I don't know if this problem is exclusively in the HIV-positive population, or across the board. Either way, the boils and ulcers that form on the skin are severe.
"They are nasty, and can be vigorous and persistent," he added, encouraging anyone who exhibits the symptoms of a skin staph infection to seek medical attention immediately.

Apparantly, their AIDS injections via Hepatitis B vaccine testing, did not succeed in killing off all the "smart" queers (in response to the burgeoning queer rights movement of the 60s & 70s).
It needs to be a highly/easily contagious germ...which is a GREAT way to create panic in the hetero majority, which then will run all over us queers, like a stampede of demon bulls.
I believe this is a genuine conspiracy against gays, to create terror and an anti-gay holocaust. I believe disseminating such a terrorist-meme (in the form of the IDEA that queers are truly toxic to children and other living things)...is part of their blueprint in dismantling democracy and any other remnants of individual freedom.
Of course, we are the most obvious scapegoat, as our people are more widely hated and stereotyped than any other...this evil anti-gay meme even infiltrating all OTHER oppressed minorities.
How does one bust an evil meme? Education? Not really, not when we need much more rapid response time, in order to fight back and win our rights in the long run. We need to disseminate our own original memes that reveal the lies in evil memes...and are more catchy, thus more memorable, thus more POWERFUL. I call them "meme-busting memes", or "the Mighty Mouse Virus"...because they are really GOOD memes busting BAD memes.
This meme methodology, I have been using most effectively for at least several years. And now, all my writings are infused with powerful memes, which then are released via my website and newsgroup/list participation.
The best memes are those that are most rapidly and widely dispersed, due to the controversy/titillation they create. So the BEST audience to target are young teens, whose juices have just begun flowing, and thus find provocative, sexual-innuendo-type memes HIGHLY INTRIGUING and of PRICELESS VALUE when it comes to sharing such material...for MISCHIEF is a very alluring game for these youngsters. (That is EXACTLY what the enemy is doing, so we got to fight fire with fire in this case...by building BETTER fires than theirs.)
Since being gay remains such a "forbidden fruit" in our society, then a "forbidden fruit" approach to these memes works most excellently. A "hot" meme in their eyes would be something like:
"Don't be sorry,
don't be shy.
Jesus is gay,
and so am I."
(I believe this meme is at least as powerful as one from our enemy, e.g.: "Silly f*ggot. Dicks are for chicks!")

You bet young adults and teens have lots of fun spreading around such "forbidden" material...especially if you turn it into a noble adventure full of mischief, rewards and laughs.
The more powerful/numerous our memes, the better our odds.
It takes only ONE person smarter than any from the enemy camp, to win the entire war. That is the law of the spirit ("psychic") realm. Once again, QUALITY wins out over (hetero) quantity.
Meme implanting and dispersal is a very amenable mission for armchair hacktivists...and others who'd like to DO something, but can't find the time to leave their home to do it. Create/spread pro-queer memes in all newsgroups that would reach young folks, including the Christian ones.
