I just retuned from Ghana, West Africa where my wife and I lived for two
years in a rural village. There was nothing around us so we stayed in touch
with the world by using the 9600 birds - particularly KO-23. HF packet may
have been cheaper, but given the solar cycle, I worried about HF's
reliability. Amateur operators in the U.S. transfered email from family for
us. It worked out great. BTW, we powered everything by a solar
(photovoltaic) system. Let me know if you want more info. Good luck.

Your best bet would probably be to access a number of the "flying mailbox"
PacSats that fly over each point on the globe twice a day. It's
sufficient to relay BBS messages back and forth. You'll probably find
some useful info at http://www.amsat.org.

Unfortunately, that's not legal on the UK licence.
