Very sad news. I am so sorry to have to post this.

It appears that Franco Corelli has passed away, and this time it is not a
rumor.

A few posts have appeared on Opera-l about this, with a link to the Italian
paper
La Reppublica's article concerning this dreadful news.

At least his suffering is ended, and he is in a better place. May God bless and
rest his soul.

It's true. Corriere dell Sera is running this announcement:

29 ott 20:35 Musica: e' morto Franco Corelli, voce italiana al
Metropolitan di NY

MILANO - Il tenore Franco Corelli e' morto a Milano, in un istituto dove era
ricoverato da tempo. Aveva 82 anni.
(Agr)

And so a true giant has passed from us.
Ironicaly, I've been listening almost exclusively to Mr Corelli's
recordings the past couple of days, and as usual, I never cease to be
amazed at the superhuman beauty and power of his voice.
How thankful we are that he was with us, and left us a rich legacy of
his unique artistry.
Thank you, Mr Corelli, and rest in peace...

Ed-
As I came across your post, I was in the middle of listening to the new EMI
release of previously unreleased Corelli recordings. In fact, as I'm typing,
I'm reveling in his glorious rendition of "O Souverain" from "Le Cid."
There was only one Franco Corelli. Thank goodness we were privileged enough to
hear him.
Best,
Ken

As some of you know, my screen name commemorates the place and year of Franco
Corelli's birth.

I will no longer be posting under that name. I will be using my primary screen
name: Pop Schneider.

Beautifully said, Roger. Amen to that.

This was not at all unexpected at this point, but is saddening
nonetheless. Though mortal, he was indeed superhuman on many a level and
will always remain supreme in the memory of all of us fortunate enough
to have heard this Operatic titan.

Yes, thank goodness indeed, Ken.

I also have this newly released CD, and it is awesome.

I am playing only Corelli tonight, and have on right now the "Heros" CD on EMI.
What a marvel. Just incredible singing that we will never hear again.

Thanks, Ken, for remembering this great man.

I am so sorry for you, Ancona, and for all Corelli fans, which means all opera
fans.

The man was untouchable. You have paid him your unique tribute tonight. Thank
you.

Ditto. An amazing singer who will NOT be forgotten. I'm amazed to hear from
people who saw him in recent years that he worried about being forgotten.....

Karajan said it all so beautifully, "A voice of heroic power, yet with great
beauty of tone; darkly sensuous, mysteriously melancholic....but above all, a
voice of thunder and lightening, fire and blood." Who else but Corelli
combines so awesomely both power and gentleness?

RIP, Franco.

Just read Ed rosen's post. I feel orphaned again, as I did when Richard Tucker
died. These were my two favorite tenors, and though new hopeful's arrive on
the scene from time to time, I suspect no one will ever take their place. I
don't know where the years have passed! Two years ago, at the concert in
Firenze to honor Tucker, the guest of honor was Renata Tebaldi, no longer the
majestic presence I remembered from the stage, but a frail old lady who could
barely walk. And now Corelli, that lion of a tenor, dead at the age of 83.
I'm devastated.

Part of his unassuming nature, - so much the opposite of stars with far
less to be proud of.

I have 30 signed 4x7" promo photos from Angel records of Franco Corelli. He is in  costume for Andrea Chenier, I think. (brochaded coat, ruffles, not my favorite photo of him).

I was a friend of Franco Corelli, some 40 years ago, and I think that Loretta must have given these to me to hand out.
Anyway, I would like to give these to fans who might appreciate them but I am not sure how to go about it. Are there any unselfish suggestions?  I just hate them going to waste........

Please do not offer money, that wasn't the original intention, nor is it now.

He was thrilling to see and to hear.........An absolutely, uniquely, beautiful voice!

A feeling shared by countless many of us.

There is, btw, a wonderful book, more of a praising than a biography
per se, - but for that very reason, specifically enriching and of some
comfort now, to all who have loved his indescribable vocalism.

Its title:
"Franco Corelli: A Man, A Voice" by Marina Boagno. A CD is included with
representative selections from his live performances.

If I'm not too late, I would certainly love one of those signed photos. I have
a framed photo of Corelli as Dick Johnson over my desk. Thanks either way.

Alex, I would *love* to own one of those. Living in South Africa, without
the financial means to indulge my passion for opera by travelling abroad,
I contented myself with FC's amazing recordings.

I can say that I met Franco Corelli once, about 3 years ago, in NYC.
He was a most gracious and accomodating man, who still at that time,
carried his little dog in a shopping bag, the cute animal peering out
at everyone making such a fuss over his master.

And what a master of the voice he was! I love his singing and will
always regret not being able to hear him just once in the theater.
RIP Franco Corelli...

That was an exciting day for us, wasn't it, Ron? As much as my
friends and I tried to prepare for his passing it was still
devastating news. Franco Corelli was the reason I became passionate
about opera and his voice opened the door to so many things for me.
His voice brought me together with people I have the privilege of
considering as dear friends and for that I will always be grateful.
He will be in our hearts always and I hope he knows how so very many
people loved him.

I'll never forget that day, Dee. And yes, you are absolutely right,
how many of us share a passion for a great singer and become
friends...it is another legacy that they leave, besides their
recordings. "tu lo sai."
