You may want to rethink that....... The Military was under control of a gov't
that was not interested in a victory (especially a military victory). IN
1969 The VC and NVA was defeated. Our gov't disregarded this, and allowed the
VC and NVA to regroup and re-ingage in the war.
( the anti-bating statement) I am not saying that the NLF were whimps, Even
the women had brass balls. They were committed. I would like to see that
spunk, loyalty, commentment, and vertibrae in our gov't.
Er, well, if said life guard were to have sneaked out to the boonies and joined
a line company, he probably would have just gotten article-15'd, so that
wouldn't work, really. I am just trying to get my mind around the idea that
guys with jobs not directly involved in combat are to be held to such a
standard as you suggest here. I mean, I feel a certain amount of projection is
going on. I do remember a swimming pool built at Qui Nhon for the 173rd
Support Battalion, by the engineers - it was surely only a couple grand - and
it had a plastic liner to hold the water. A boonie rat slashed it with a
bayonet and I never knew if it was repaired or not, but in the 173rd, at the
time, if there had been a life guard, it probably would have been an 11B who
extended his tour, so why the fuck not?

Please see my Web Site: http://come.to/CIABASE for details
of my tour in Vietnam with the CIA and with studies I performed
re "People's War" while still in the Agency. At the web site I also
discuss other experiences and studies re the same subject.

Hell, that would have been one of our LP's and Cleared Hot in 65'. No
place to be at all. We lost a lot of people and equipment to mines in
that river that ran up from there. Can't remember the name of it.

Ralph was there - CIA. Check "Deadly Deceits", his memoir. He does have a
particular take on the war that lots of folks don't agree with, but which
was held by some analyist like Sam Adams. Basically the same issue as the
CBS - Westmoreland dispute over the "uncounted enemy",
This theme is also carried by some academics, such as Marilyn Young.
At any rate, McGehee was there, Indeed, he even has an oral history
interview at the LBJ Library.
