Friends--
I would like to instill a little discussion regarding the work
of that great Bavarian wunderkind Rainer Werner Fassbinder. I recently
saw a restored print of _Beware of the Holy Whore_ an early film from
1970 that was truly wonderful. Fassbinder's vision, IMHO, is truly
unparalleled. As he made some 40 films in a decade or so, there is
much fodder for colloquy. Come on out Fassbinder mavens!!!

What Fassbinder film is it - a one-armed man walks into a flower shop and says
"What flower expresses days go by, and they just keep going by, endlessly,
pulling you, into the future...days go by, endlessly, endlessly pulling you -
into the future" and the florist says, "White Lily"?

Well, I'm no Fassbinder expert, but I have seen two of his movies recently
(the only Fassbinder I've seen).
"The Marriage of Maria Braun" was quite good--very fresh, very entertaining,
and packed an amazing amount of plot in two hours... By the end of the film,
I thought back on all the events that had led up to this point, and was
amazed at how much had been crammed in. The *only* thing that bothered me
was that damn radio playing in the final scene--I'm sure it was making some
artistic statement, but it just grated on my nerves and made me want to
shout "TURN IT OFF."
"Satan's Brew" was quite different. Whereas "Maria" seemed to be a fairly
conventional, albeit adult, drama, "Satan's Brew" was a bizarre farce that
made almost no sense, and frequently tested the extent to which one can be
offended... I guess I didn't find anything really "offensive" <I'm not the
kind to be offended by penises flashed about> though some scenes and images
were definitely disturbing <the most memorable being the weak woman with
those goofy glasses and the egg spit on her face>. The story was terribly
uneven though, and it was hard to laugh at times, and it could have been a
lot better had it either been outright funnier, had bothered with a plot, or
had perhaps a more redeeming sort as a main character. I dunno. I just saw
it last night, and my thoughts are still pretty random.

I believe, but am not certain, that that is "The Merchant of Four Seasons."

The only Fassbinder story I know - from Paul Johnson's "Intellectuals" -
concerns our hero's adolescence.
He was eversoprecocious, and (of course) had to have s "shocking"
homosexual affair. He fell in love with a butcher's assistant, and
announced it theatrically to his father:

"Father, I have fallen in love with a man, a butcher's boy."

His dad - with a very German attitude - grunted and replied:

"Well, if you must sleep with men, can't you choose someone from the
University."

A good putdown, and sums up Fassbinder's life and work: trying eversohard
to shock the bourgeousie, most of whom could'nt care less.

Robert Mapplethorpe is one of the same.

So what *has* Laurie Anderson been doing lately anyway? Anyone know?

ObMovie: Maybe she's editing together a film release of United States?

I understand it's obligatory to mention Kibo somewhere in one's postings.

Hello friends: Anyone with any comments about the above's *Beware of the Holy
Whore* please jot them down. I am trying to write an essay encompassing
this film with some of his others. I could really use some input
on this on however. Thanks a load. Len
