Greetings:
As I have detailed before, retail sales of recorded music in the United States
are tracked by a company named SoundScan. SoundScan uses data acquired from
thousands of retailers. These sales figures are compiled, in aggregate and in
details of dozens of demographics and markets, and then are made available to
SoundScan subscribers.
Virtually all US sales figures quoted by record companies, Artists, or as
reported in the media are from SoundScan. However SoundScan does not report
upon music sold directly to consumers by methods other than by retail, such as
the titles sold by post by Barfco-Swill.

According to SoundScan, the thirty biggest selling Frank Zappa titles in the
United States for 2002, in order, were:
1. STRICTLY COMMERCIAL
2. CHEAP THRILLS
3. APOSTROPHE
4. OVERNITE SENSATION
5. JOE'S GARAGE ACTS I, II & III
6. SHEIK YERBOUTI
7. HOT RATS
8. SON OF CHEEP THRILLS
9. FREAK OUT!
10. WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY
11. ONE SIZE FITS ALL
12. ZOOT ALLURES
13. ROXY & ELSEWHERE
14. HAVE I OFFENDED SOMEONE?
15. FILLMORE EAST JUNE 1971
16. THREESOME NO. 1
17. WAKA/JAWAKA
18. BONGO FURY
19. ABSOLUTELY FREE
20. WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH
21. GUITAR
22. BURNT WEENY SANDWICH
23. JAZZ FROM HELL
24. THREESOME NO. 2
25. SHUT UP 'N PLAY YER GUITAR
26. ZAPPA IN NEW YORK
27. JUST ANOTHER BAND FROM L.A.
28. UNCLE MEAT
29. THE BEST BAND YOU NEVER HEARD IN YOUR LIFE
30. TINSELTOWN REBELLION

As before when referring to SoundScan sales reports, I do not include any
actual sales figures. However STRICTLY COMMERCIAL sold about seven times as
many copies as TINSELTOWN REBELLION, CHEAP THRILLS sold about twice as many
copies as HOT RATS, APOSTROPHE sold about four times as many copies as JUST
ANOTHER BAND FROM L.A., JOE'S GARAGE ACTS I, II & III sold about three times as
many copies as JAZZ FROM HELL, FREAK OUT! sold about twice as many copies as
BURNT WEENY SANDWICH, and ABSOLUTELY FREE and WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH sold
virtually an equal amount.
Only two FZ titles sold more than 10,000 copies. The total sales of all FZ
titles reported by SoundScan as being sold in 2002 are down about 8% from sales
of all FZ titles in 2001. And FZ sales in 2001 were down about 10% from sales
of all FZ titles in 2000. This means the retail sales of all FZ titles in the
US have declined about 18%, almost one-fifth, in two years.

Cheers,
Zoot

So we got ourselves a math problem: how many copies of JAZZ FROM HELL were
sold in 2000?

Anyone?

Thanks zoo, i've been searching for this type of info for years. I don't
suppose there are numbers for worldwide sales? Per country for example?

How many JFH sold. We know (approximately) JFH=JG/3 and JG<10000.
Hence, JFH<3333 copies.
