Minor list: Mozart, Byron, Keats, perhaps Beethoven, certainly Schumann,
Hugo Wolf, van Gogh, Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Plath, Abraham Lincoln, Winston
Churchill. Enough for a start?

How do we know they were actually bipolar... I always hear about these
great people being bipolar but wonder if that is just wishful
thinking...

Does anyone have facts about this, not just bipolar rumor? Is Robin Williams

Don't know for sure but I know for a fact that he lends his name and
support to Tourette Syndrome (got pix to prove it) which is another
spectrum disorder with overlapping symptoms. If he doesn't have one or
the other, he certainly does a good imitation!

I see that it is time to head on into the Boulder Army Store (all my
almost-PhD budget will allow) and buy some large reflective sunglasses to wear
at night, a low slouch hat (what do you think, a sorcerous fedora?), and
maybe a sweeping black cape (would fit with the wizardly persona, no?), so
that I might keep my now-confirmedly famous bipolar personage hidden whilst I
walk amongst the throngs of bipolar groupies.
I was actually born in Aspen (before the rich showed up, but that is a minor
point), so I have seen my share of the filthy rich and famous. From this
experience I think that I have mastered the delicately snarled upper lip, the
stiff yet insolent walk, and most of all the gag-me-with-a-shovel attitude.
At last I get my birth right. I knew all that Aspen training was for a
grander purpose than mere humility making (naw, could it? naw).

I am waiting to hear from someone who knows about this stuff. Those lists
that I have checked which document their sources do NOT show Robin Williams as
bipolar (Kay Jamison, Joy Ikelman at
http://www.frii.com/~parrot/living.html#bipolars).
Robin's mentor, Jonathan Winters, is definitely out of the bipolar closet. I
have heard that there is a spectacularly funny stand-up sketch in which
Winters talks about being bipolar, hospitalizations etc. Anyone here know
about this?

If Robin W. is NOT BP...than he sure puts up a damn good front. He is
aamzing. I saw him on a TV special where he was entertaining kids...they
and I couldn't stop laughing but I was SO exhausted watching him change
characters in a nanosecond that I felt like I had been on speed!!!!

Here is a long list of bipolars. I have no idea how valid
the list is, but it is interesting.

I have a mental illness. Why do I find it so hard to tell
you this? Why are my throat constricted, my palms sweaty,
and my fingers
trembling as I write this? I don’t have trouble telling you
my eyes are not perfect and that I need to wear contact
lenses. I don’t have
difficulty telling you I have arthritis in my left knee that
sometimes limits my physical activities. Why should I mind
telling you that I
have something wrong with my brain and how well it works?
It is because of the shame and stigma associated with mental
illness.
Why should this be so? Mental illness is common, very
common. One out of ten people will have a mental illness
during their
lifetime. Most people think mental illness means someone
hallucinates and is not in touch with reality, but mental
illness is much
broader than that. It includes a range of illnesses from
attention deficit disorder to severe depression and anxiety
disorders. Many
people with mental illnesses are highly successful and make
significant contributions to society. Here are the names of
a few: Mike
Douglas, Walter Cronkite, Ted Turner and Robin Williams.

It is also entirely possible that many non-bipolar individuals exhibit
emotions, creativity, and general craziness. How on earth could a Doctor watch
Robin Williams on TV and diagnoses him with a bipolar illness -- that's total
incompetence. BTW, Ted Turner got a second opinion and the MD concluded he was
not bipolar (a good article about his life in a recent Reader's Digest
article). Nietzsche suffered from syphilis, which certainly contributed to his
later insanity. It's an unrealistic stretch to pin this insanity to bipolar
illness.
I'm sorry for the ranting and raving, but I constantly fight this illness. I
don't suffer from the extremes of mania and depression, but I do struggle with
dythemia and depression. I think am normal --- my psychriatrist thinks I'm
bipolar. When I was initially diagnosed with a bipolar illness, I thought I
was in the company of great thinkers, artists and so many that left a mark on
the world. I always wanted to be one them. Now I was. Unfortunately, it
wasn't that simple. My life turned upside down and I've never recovered. I
thought it would be easier to blame a chemical imbalance for my live's ills ---
it's not. I am slowly learning to once again take responsibility for my life
and not blame a illness.

This doesn't prove anything, of course. Nietzsche could have
had a hidden sexual encounter. He did propose to a woman as
a young professor, and he had a long term friendship with
the wife of his friend. here's the link:

of course he was intimate with a woman, when he was 20 or so, and he the badluck

details on this here, but if u look for it u'll find it, it has been published
years ago, in german, then, in the early '80, in french translation.
and btw keith, being a fan of Nietzsche is quite a paradox : Nietzsche was a fan
