I have a Dell Dimension desktop XPST450, 128 MB, 13.6gb, Windows 98se, Zone Alarm Pro
3.5, IE/OE 6 sp1. Cable connection. When I turned on the computer this morning I got
"Memory Parity detected System Halted" Then it went into safe mode, I tried to open
Zone alarm so I could uncheck the box for it to startup with machine and system
froze. Turned it off. An hour later I tried to turn it on without the Cable
connected - Invalid VXD dynamic link call from C1855084 to device "0028" Service
800A. Your Windows configuration is invalid" etc To continue running windows may
cause your computer to become unstable. (no kidding Sherlock).
3rd time I tried to start it - A fatal exception OE has occurred @017F:BFF9D7FF?
Closed that box - got Webscan X caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE
@0001.000003d2.
Then another box Zapro caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE @
001:000003d2.

I suspect this is all being caused by Zone Alarm Pro. This morning I bought a Belkin
router. (I have only one computer in my home) because someone told me it will do the
same thing as a firewall. Is this true? Should I uninstall ZAP and put this on? Does
a router need you to put firewall software in to protect you? Thank you for your
help. Ginnyrn

Hi,

Memory Parity errors would not be caused by ZA. However if you deleted a
driver file in Safe mode, then ZA could cause the invalid VXD error on
reboots, simply hit Enter to continue. You have a registry entry pointing to
the firewall driver file but the file was removed. I would get the hardware
checked first, it could be a bad memory module.
Also, the Belkin provides inbound protection only (which is still a good
thing). But it doesn't provide the outbound anti-Trojan protection.

BTW ZA works great with hardware firewalls too!

I have McAfee vs. Do I need outbound protection? Does LinkSys have both?

Hi,

McAfee is decent antivirus protection. Most antivirus is not really
designed to detect Trojans easily, as they are very different. I still
recommend good aoutbound protection of some kind, whetehr a personal
firewall or anti-Trojan software (I like Trojan Hunter and BOClean, both
work well). The Linksys does not have outbound control either, what it has
it a way to enforce ZAP is running on any machine trying to access the
Internet.
