Hello all- any help is much appreciated from you preeminent gurus...

I'm running NT Wkstn. SP3 on a Dell PentiumII 333mhz, 128mb SDRAM. I had a
crash about a month ago, after which I did a check and replace of the system
files from the NT disk. Then I reinstalled SP3 and IE 4.0- but I get the
initialization of the dll errors on rasman.dll and rasscrpt.dll- process is
terminating abnormally. Repeating the process gets the same result. So no
internet access except via AOL, which logs on fine, and McAfee won't run
automatically (ie- it's in the tray and I can scan, but it won't auto-scan).

Also, recently (in the past week), I've had this popping up at startup and when
the screensaver tries to start- 'Hidden console of WOW VDM
SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers. VDD. VirtualDeviceDriver
format in the registry is invalid. Choose close to terminate the application'
with the close and Ignore buttons. If I click Ignore (without moving the
mouse)the screensaver starts up without problem.

I'm no tech wizard and am at a bit of a loss- the system is functioning fine
apart from the above problems, and so I'm reluctant to do a full reinstall of
the OS unless absolutely necessary. Any suggestions?

Thanks in anticipation...

I'd recommend uninstalling and reinstalling RAS.

About the Hidden Console... maybe this'll help...

Thanks for the answers Frank- took me a while to get back and check- it's been
a busy week. The only question I have is how do I uninstall/reinstall the RAS?
I've tried the system file replacement from the NT install CD- and that didn't
seem to help. If you could point me in the right direction, I'd be much
obliged. (I checked add/remove in the ctrl panel but no luck).

The WOW VDM problem I had mysteriously fixed itself- why, I have no idea.

Thanks again for your help!

To uninstall RAS go to Control Panel, Network, Services and highlight Remote
Access Service and choose Remove.

Thanks again Frank- I tried it, but things seem to be a considerable mess. I
went to CtrlPanel-> Services, and had no Remote Access Server listed. I went to
CtrlPanel ->Network, and got th efollowing messages.

WindowsNT networking is not installed. Do you want to install it now? -Yes

WindowsNT needs to know how this computer should participate on a network. - I
picked Remote Access to the network, since I need TCP/IP, modem access, and
unchecked the Wired to the netwok option, since I don't have ISDN, and I don't
think I have a Network Adapter (it came pre-setup and working, so who knows?).

It searches for Network Adapters and finds none. I select from list MS Loopback
Adapter, since I think this is the right one to pick when you're are just using
a modem for the internet. Am I wrong? I'm using a Sportster 56.6k modem. (I
tried the USR Allegra 56 Adapter as well, with the same results).

Next I pick the protocols for TCP/IP and NetBEUI- I've tried only TCP/IP but I
end up with the same response. (See below).

I leave all the Network Services as they are (all on), put the Windows NT
Workstation disk in the drive, indicate the drive letter, and leave the frame
type at 802.3, since I have no idea what this is.

I get the following messages...
TCP/IP protocol v4.0 already exists on the system. Please [Update] to update
the software.

NetBEUI protocol v4.0 already exists on the system. Please [Update] to update
the software.

Server v4.0 already exists on the system. Please [Update] to update the
software.

Workstation v4.0 already exists on the system. Please [Update] to update the
software.

NetBIOS v4.0 already exists on the system. Please [Update] to update the
software.

RPC Configuration v4.0 already exists on the system. Please [Update] to update
the software.

Remote Access Service v4.0 is already installed.

WinSock 1.1 to 2.0 Migration failed ( 0x2)
Binding Review and Configuration will continue, but your networking components
may not be correctly configured.

I click through the bindings, and then as it is going through Bindings Storing,
I get a little error window with just a yellow triangle sign with an
exclamation point, and an ok button.

Click ok and get error Service Dependency update failed.

The Network Setup Wizard stays open and I have to close it with my Task Manager
since the cancel button is greyed out.

That's the full roster. HELP! Am I doing something wrong? I've asked a few
computer programmers I know, and they have no idea. I really want and need this
to be working- since AOL doesn't support NT, I keep having trouble with it. I
can't switch to another ISP until this is taken care of, not to mention
programs unable to access the networking abilities.

You're not really on a network in this sense if you're only connecting
to the Internet. I don't think you should choose either. See my next
comment.

You don't need any network adapter for connecting to the Internet with
a modem. Anything that gives you that dialog sounds like the wrong
choice.

You only need TCP/IP if you're just connecting to the Internet.

Maybe you should start over. Remove RAS from Network|Services and
install it again. If your modem is not listed on the Add RAS Device
dialog, click Install Modem.

Make sure you select 'Dial Out Only' in 'Remote Access Setup|
configure Port Usage' and only select TCP/IP in 'RAS Setup|Network
Configuration'.

I'm just another end user, but I'd be glad to TRY to answer any other
questions.
