Yes I have it posted online at gencircles

Do this already. Not too many of the older generation still alive,
but I live next door to my uncle, and I can bribe him with ancestors
who are veterans of the Colonial Wars.

If you use pencil be sure not to press.

Yes I belong to surname lists for Fay, Chandler and Newton

On a note related to the kinship issue, I am "my own cousin" through
my Fay and Newton Lines. Susanna Shattuck married first Joseph
Morse, and had a daughter Susanna Morse, who married a Newton. She
married second John Fay and had a son Gershom with him. Susanna
Morse's descendant Darius Newton was my GGgrandfather. John Fay's
descendant Harriet Augusta Fay married him.

I have another similar link through my Fay and Rice lines. I made
up the "own cousin" thing, but how would you analyze that?

I have gotten a lot of information from my Ggrandmother's letters to
her husband, and back. For instance, there was a couple in photo
albums named Doughty, and I didn't know how they related to my
grandfather. It turns out (from various messages requesting that my
Ggrandparents put in some ice) that I determined that they were
neighbors.

At my Ggrandparents 50th wedding anniversary, my Guncle had
guestlists divided into family and friends, with sigatures. I have
been able to follow a lot of links by this. He also included a
photostat of a clipping about the other Newton couples who had
fiftieths from the generation before. Very helpful.

The letters actually make these people very real to me, in some ways
I know them better than my own parents because I read their private
thoughts.

I think I may go to those archives that a previous response
recommended, because I could get windfalls of official information

Is this like the sex linked DNA studies? My Rice ancestors are doing
this, but I obviously can't participate.

This is like Chandler

I have ancestors named VAGUE, which makes doing searches online hard
because it brings up so many "usage" vagues instead of surname VAGUE

Have you tried using "VAGUE family" in quotes? I have a similar
problem with my HEARDs. When I do a search for Mary Ann HEARD I get
heard used as a verb a lot.

Some search engines permit you to specify that you want your search
limited to a specific Surname field. The RootsWeb/Ancestry Message
Boards, for example, permit an advanced search which is limited to
this field. Other databases with Surname fields would also permit
surname specific (as opposed to to every word) searches. Always
look to see whether an advanced search feature is offered when
searching on surnames which are also common words or given names.

Also, when you are posting a query on a Message Board about a
surname that is also a common word or given name be sure you
complete the Surname field if one is available--because the purpose
of providing such a field is to enable a surname only search to help
others find you as mentioned above.

My name BEST is hard to search also. I try two tricks: search for
the whole name with quotes in google
Ex: "William Best"
When searching a web site I check the case sensitive box and search
for Best or BEST thus avoiding best.
