Summary:
Chap. 13. The Nativity

Mary and St. Joseph recited prayers together. Then St. Joseph filled the
manger with straw and moss and placed a cloth over it. St. Joseph withdrew
to the entrance of the cave and upon seeing that Mary, who continued praying,
was surrounded by flames of dazzling supernatural light, he threw himself
to the ground with reverent fear. Then he fell into an ecstatic sleep.

Toward midnight, a channel of brilliant light came down from heaven and
settled in a sparkling fire at the Blessed Virgin who was transfigured and
spiritualized that she did not seem any longer human or an earthly creature.
Then the infant-God was born, glorious and transfigured as on Mount Thabor.

The angels sang canticles in adoration to the God-Man who lay, naked
utterly clean and pure, radiating in marvelous light and splendor.

Mary perceived that she just delivered the Babe but without pain or injury
to her. So she immediately bowed her head in His honor and covered His tiny
body with clothing. She adored Him respectfully, saying, "Welcome, my God,
and my Lord, and my Son."

(exact quote follows)
Then the divine Child suspended the effects of His transfiguration and
assumed the appearance of one capable of suffering. The Babe now moved,
shivered with cold, and stretching forth His little arms, cried out.

Bending down, Mary tenderly clasped Him to her heart and with great joy
warmed Him against her cheek and breast, while thousands of angels knelt
and adored their Incarnate Creator. (end qoute)

Mary called St. Joseph nearly one hour after the birth. St. Joseph perceived
his Savior in Mary's arms and so he prostrated himself on the ground to adore
Him. When Mary bidded him to rise, he kissed the Babe's feet and held Him
in his arms while tears of joy flowed from his eyes.

Some sheperds' animals came and knelt before the manger after Mary wrapped
Him carefully in the swaddling clothes she prepared for Him. This scene
caused more tears to flow from St. Joseph's and Mary's eyes upon seeing it.

Then St. Joseph took some blankets and placed them near the manger so Mary
could rest on them.
