Buy.com offers this 15PPM Duplex printer for $278.95. Does anyone have any
experience with this printer, in terms of actual speed, reliability, noise,
duplex feature, ease of use, etc.? It offers exactly the features I'm
looking for in a personal laser, especially 15ppm and duplex, but this price
seems too good to be true, and I'm wondering if there's a "catch" somewhere.

General rule of thumb is "if it seems too good to be true, it is."
They don't make money on the printers, they make it on the consumables.
Price the consumables, if you can find them. Non HP printers consumables
generally aren't stocked, but have to be special ordered. Also it falls into
the category of "disposable printer". If it breaks, no way you're going to
get
it fixed in a timely or cost effective manner. So you buy the extended
warranty.
Good luck getting it back in anything less than 6 weeks. So now you have to
buy
a replacement printer to tide you over. You would have been better off just
tossing it and buying a new one. Back to the "disposable printer" concept.
Another rule of thumb is "You get what you pay for".

Do you work for HP or do you just have something against non-HP printers? I
appreciate your general comments, but they don't answer my question on this
SPECIFIC printer. HP makes some fine printers. In fact whatever new printer
I purchase will replace my ancient HP 4P, which has worked well for over 8
years. And nearly every firm I've ever worked for has standardized on HP
printers. However, they're a lot more expensive than comparable printers
from other makes, so I figure that even if the consumable are more
expensive, I'll ultimately save money by buying a non-HP printer. This will
be for light to moderate (non-business) home use, so I'm not going to be
going through toner like there's no tomorrow. My main concerns then are not
about price, but of noise, reliability, speed, features, ease of use, etc.
Not everyone buys something because it's cost-effective, although, for my
needs, this printer will probably be more cost-effective than a comparable
HP.

Incidentally, I did some research and it turns out that this printer's toner
is rated at 4000 pages, and its drum at 20,000 pages, costing around $52 &
$110, respectively. Assuming that they're even halfway close to real-world
results, these figures seem fairly reasonable.

I was looking at this printer too, but could not find much info. At
least it is PCL6, while the cheaper KX-P7100 is a GDI printer. In
general, the Panasonics seem to be rarer in the US, and Moe's
comments, although somewhat HP-centric, have a ring of truth to them.
I have ultimately been disappointed with equipment purchased that
speced well past the point of reality.

I did turn up an admittably more expensive Brother, the HL-1850 that
specs and rates well. The previous printer in that line, the HL-1650,
has also received good marks. Office Depot and Staples both seem to
carry supplies for the Brother line.

Unless I hear that this is a piece of crap from someone who's used it, I'll
probably spring for this printer. Yes, it might very well turn out to be too
good to be true, but at this price (nearly half that of the Brother), it
might be worth taking a chance. Plus, Panasonic laser printers have always
been a bit "off", in terms of looks, features and price. They used to have a
line of vertical lasers that looked funny but apparently worked pretty well.
So perhaps it's true, and they really are "just slightly ahead of out
time"... (Or is that another company?)

I do not know this specific printer but I have a long history of buying
various electronic Matsushita (Panasonic) products and have generally
found them to be no frills, down to earth products well engineered.

Let us know of your experience anyway :-)
