I am in the suggestion stage for having the David Nelson Band play a small
NYE gig. . .what I need help with is finding a small hall in the Bay area. .
.there was a small Womans League Hall in Berkeley that Wavy Gravy had a gig
in years ago. . .need to be able to have music so advance permits prefered.
. .any suggestions send to my home email garr...@pacbell.net. .

I have it on good authority that one of the members of DNB has a certain
appreciation/mania for Marin County wildflowers, as in stalking the wild
and rare Tiburon Mariposa Lily, and he might be outraged at the suggestion
of trampling my habitat restoration project.

And, the thing is...I'm not joking.

as much as a small party with DNB on NYE sounds like much fun. Too bad the
powers that be don't have them on the stage on NYE with The Dead. Of course
they might be frightened they get shown up. LOL And lose the crowd for the rest
of the night

. DNB opening for the Dead for a tour would bring back great memories of NRPS
opening for the Gratefulfucking Dead. Now that is a tour I could travel for.

Plus it sure would be nice to have so many ears turned on from throughout the
country.
So let us all say it loud and proud

LET THE DNB PLAY WITH THE DEAD AT LEAST SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE!

Well, what the deal is...

David, Barry and Billy all live in Northern California.

Mookie and Charlie live in Baltimore. The original DNB drummer lives in
Portland.

It's a sad state of affairs. Due to tiny crowds, and the cost of
transcontinental flights, they can't really afford to fly the keyboardist
and drummer to the Bay Area. Which is why we've had the Trio for the past
18 months or so. As it is, Pete Sears and Jimmy Sanchez also live in the
Bay Area, and that's how they became "The Friends."

Charlie Crane is only a part-time drummer. His day job is as a house
painter, and things started unraveling maybe 18 months ago, when Charlie
had a big painting job...and he made so much more than he would have made
with DNB. In addition, he has some health problem, so this summer's few
DNB dates had Arthur Steinhorn on drums.

Likewise with Mookie...he had a back operation maybe 18 months ago, and
was side-lined for maybe 6 months. So, that's when the Trio started.

It's so bizarre! DNB is so damned hot, yet they can't really afford to
play together. The usual attendance is about 50 people, and I've seen them
with as few as 10 in the audience. And, it seems to me that they mainly
play within driving distance of one of their houses, so the rest of the
band can "crash on the floor."

Yet, as odd as it'll sound, there is an upside to all this...

The band knows their entire fan base, by first name. When they played in
Oakland a few weeks ago, Garry was stunned that the bass player hugged him
and welcomed him back. It's like we are all family. When I walked into the
Oakland Metro last month, I jokingly told my 2 flower girls that I knew
everyone in the audience.

Quite often, they kick off their show with "Long Gone Sam," a song which
starts with. "Well, I ain't standing here for the money..."

Ain't that the truth!

Anyone (Garry, Joe) want to convince Hope and I that this is the thing
to do on NYE with a quick B&P/trade? Our DNB exposure has been
limited to the few tracks I've downloaded, but we've never heard an
entire show.

We'd both be interested in coming up (from Half Moon Bay), but aren't
really willing to make the decision without a little substance behind
it...

Anyone want to help us out?

I was just listening to 4/11/03 (4/10/03?) coming into work today. It is
basically a psuedo-electric show with Dave playing acoustic. A wonderful
'Peggy-O' followed by a still more wonderful 'Rakish Paddy'.This show
also included a 'Dark Hollow' and a blazing 'Cumberland'. If I had the
choice to see the Dead, P&F or DNB, DNB would be the easy choice. In my
view, they are carrying the torch of the GD.

Agreed. The rightful heir of the Grateful Dead legacy.

If you have 4/10/03, the second CD opens with an incredible "Any Naked
Eye" and it's truly amazing what David and Barry can do with acoustic
guitars. In a few of their recent Bay Area shows, that song was the high
point of the night for me. Acoustic space jams! Wow.

Barry can play better space music on an acoustic than just about anyone
else with an electric guitar.

Hmmm....maybe it's really Barry who's channeling Jerry, and not Wendy
Weird ;-)

The same, indeed! Thanks, Joe!

And as a hidden B&P offer for those this far into the thread: Eric
Clapton & Duane Allman, 24 hours after they met, got together and
jammed in a studio in Miami, FL. These are the (edited?) sessions.
I'm under the impression that much of the second disc is filler from
various sessions, live & studio (maybe Layla outtakes?).

Regardless of from whence the filler comes, every note kicks ass. I
highly recommend this show. Highly. The "Why Does Love Got To Be So
Sad (Live)" is worth flying out to my house and picking it up in
person. Which is OK, really, just give me a call first.

Show is 2 discs. I'll take anyone who wants it. It came from SHN,
but I've since lost the SHN discs... .

For once I have to agree with Joe, this is a great band, and should
have a lot more fans. I've been a fan of David Nelson since seeing him
with NRPS more than 30 years ago, and more recently as DNB or DN+F at
shows in northern CA.

Well then, why didn't you come over and say hi? You should have

Yeah, it's ironic and sad that there are so many good musicians out
there that don't get the recognition they deserve, while some
midriff-flashing, shrieking airhead bimbo can make millions without
knowing how to play a note.

You expect me to believe that there's a right wing nitwit dead head
contingent right here in the San Francisco Bay Area?

We are everywhere.
While the bay area is mostly liberal, it is far from unanimously so.
In San Francisco, for example, about 55% of voters registered as
democrats, 13% as republicans, the rest are "decline to state",
libertarian, green, and various other minority parties.
So, republicans are a minority, but in this country, minorities have
rights too, and it's not considered a crime to be in the minority.
And that 13% republican registration works out to around 73,000
regisistered republicans in San Francisco.

Think of it Joe, 73,000 registered republicans right in your own back
yard!

But I don't live in the bay area any more, though I used to. San
Francisco is still my favorite city, beautiful, diverse, tolerant,
(well, most of the people there are tolerant), and has lots of great
music. I still have friends and family there and I visit the city and
the bay area often, and catch shows there whenever I can. So you never
know, when you go to a show, if that long-haired, tie-died hippie
dancing his ass off next to you might be me, or one of the other
73,000 republicans in the area.

Ron

Let's call a spade a spade...you were exiled from the Bay Area for being
a right wing dead head.

I can't blame you for not living here. After all, even small children
must have laughed at your republicanism.

Small Child: "Look, Daddy, that man over there has blood on his hands."
Daddy: "Yes son, that's because he's a Repulsive Republican."

Have no fear though. It's a disease, and it's treatable.

No need to go through life bearing such a horrible stigma. It's never

Seek treatment, my man. For your own good, please ask Hateful Mark for a

(I am posting this against my better judgement, but I feel that I need to.
This isn't meant as a flame)

Joe,

At the risk of ruining the Detente that you and I have established, I have
to say that you are WAY over the line here. Just because someone disagrees
with your politics doesn't make them evil, stupid or repulsive. (Hell Joe,
you and I disagree about lots of political stuff, and I don't think that you
are any of those things, and I hope that you don't think that of me)

My father was one of the most moral upstanding men that you would ever want
to meet. We didn't agree about a whole lot when it came to politics, drugs,
religon, premarital sex, music or much of anything FTM. It didn't make him
evil. He came from a different time and place. He was a Marine, a lawyer and
an executive in several Fortune 500 corporations. We fought for the first 30
years of my life. He gave me shit about my hair, about why I didn't do more
with my life, why didn't I go back to school and get my degree and about all
sorts of other things that I can't even remember.

He also taught me to be honest, take ownership for my actions, treat people
the way I would want to be treated, to help those less fortunate than myself
, and to do my best in whatever it is that I do.

He was a man who was generous to a fault. He gave away huge sums of money to
all sorts of charities. We had inner city black kids from NYC, who came to
live with us so that they could attend the local High School (New Canaan,
Ct, for those who care)

He stopped practicing law, and became a mediator/arbitrator, because he felt
that there were too many lawsuits jamming our court system, and that many
disputes could be handled in arbitration, rather than in court.

Oh yeah, he was also a Republican.

He ran NOAA under Bush Sr and was very involved in lots of environmental
issues regarding the fishing industry, acid rain and global warming. He was
very concerned about all those issues, and certainly wasn't interested in
raping the planet and polluting the air and water.

Anyhow, your generalization that "all republicans are scum" is a foolish
generalization. There are lots of people who define themselves as
Republicans for no other reason than that is what there parents were. In the
1950's the Republicans were the party of Abraham Lincoln and the Democrats
were the party of Jim Crow and racism. It is all a matter of perspective.

I believe that the current Bush administration is a disaster, and that we
need to get him the hell out of office. I think that the Patriot Acts, TIA,
The Dept of Homeland Security are all attacks on the Constitution and that
we are less free now than we were before Bush took office. I think that the
war in Iraq was a vendetta on the part of Dubya to finish the job that his
father didn't. I think that he lied about WMD and that Iraq was never a
threat to the United States

BUT,

There are just as many slimy Democrat politicians as there are slimy
Republican politicians.
IMO, it isn't about party, it is about politicians. Power corrupts, and
absolute power corrupts absolutely. That is the issue, not party

(BTW, my father was NOT a politician, he was a political appointee, and his
three and a half years in Washington dealing with politicians left him with
a very sour taste in his mouth regarding how our government is run. He said
that 95% of all politicians forget why they were elected and who sent them
there within months of being elected. He became convinced term limits were
the answer after he left NOAA. And he had dealings with most of them from
both sides of the asile)

Politicians are by and large scum.

Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that labeling people with a broad
brush is something that diminishs whatever valid points you have to make. I
shake my head when I see some of the things you write, because I admire your
idealism, yet I am bewildered that someone who is obviously intelligent uses
so many sweeping generalizations to make their point.

Plus you end up sounding like a left wing version of HatefulMark, and I KNOW
that you don't want that.

Peace,

Scot
(still not looking for a fight)

Ironic how Joe and Grtflmrk use the exact same rationalization when
called on their shit : "I'm being funny, you must not get humor". Joe,
you're such a gutless wonder, you've sure got a lot to say but how come when
volkfolk tries to engage you in reasonable discourse about your more
egregious statements you just hide behind the curtains. Just like grtflmrk,
exactly like him in fact. The observation that you act just like grtflmrk
is very accurate. You're a shrieking windbag and a coward and you do no one
any good with your blathering. And when you're called on it, you evade and
deny and lie.

I can't believe some of the "regs" here who are your friends, they all
turn a blind eye to your horseshit. I'm on the same side of the political
fence more or less with you and I think you're a shrieking douche.

For what it's worth, I am on the same side as you joe (on most things

When you want to post about people who you think of as friends "with

keep a post for a few hours to see if you really want to send it like
that.

Careful, you are exibiting signs of common sense, something Joe is
sure to disagree with, and you know what happens when someone
disagrees with Joe.
Actually, I only call myself a republican to piss Joe off. There is no
political party that precisely supports my point of view.

I strongly support protection of the environment and development of
alternative energy, like wind, solor, biomass and geothermal. I
believe it is vital that we, as a nation and as temporary residents of
this planet, wean ourselves away from the use of the planet's limited
natural resorces.

And, while I believe in a strong military, I abhor the patriot act and
it's infringments on our liberty and privacy.

The death penalty is a tough one for me. While I doubt it has any
deterrent effect on crime, my gut reaction to those who commit some
crimes, especially against children, is that the relatively quick and
painless methods of execution now employed are too good for them. On
the other hand, the possibility of executing an innocent person by
mistake is horrendous and must be avoided at all costs.

But, enough of my point of view.

Idealism is admirable, but Joe is not an idealist, he is a fanatic.
The differance can seem subtle sometimes, but it is significant. And
as such, his ranting does more to divide people than bring them
together to find solutions to the problems we face, from local to
global.

It is unrealistic to charcterize people as one dimensional,
cartoon-like in their political beliefs, as Joe does.

But then, I guess Joe's perception of other people can only be a
reflection of his own personality, which is obviously not based in
reality.

But back to where this thread started:

Generalities, as Joe uses, just don't apply to most people. I have
been labeled, sometimes by different people all in the same day, a
hippie, a deadhead, and a biker, but I don't think any of those labels
describe me very well. I am a veteran, but I also protested against
the Viet Nam war. As a father and grandfather I have been careful to
educate my kids on the dangers of drugs, but I have been a pot smoker
for almost 40 years.

Damn, I didn't intend to get into all this when I started!

Enough! I will resolve to (mostly) avoid the political threads here in
the future, and stick to the music, which is why I started reading
this newsgroup in the first place.

Finally got the chance to sit down and watch the whole Winterland DVD
the other night, and it was great!

Ron

Huh?

I'm well aware of your well thought out posts, and where you are
politically, and never directed any of my missives your way. If you
ever thought that, my apologies.

It's the pro-Bush faction of wannabe-Dead Heads that are the object of my
ridicule. And, rightly so.

And, in an attempt to get to the bottom of all this, I contacted Wendy
Weird, who in turn contacted Otis the Dog, who in turn, contacted Jerry to
ask him what he thought about the whole concept of "right wing dead
heads."

Not surprisingly, Otis shed light on the issue. His reply, of course, was
somewhat predictable. All he could say was, "woof, woof."

So, there you have it. Straight from Jerry!

Thanks for the generous offer, but I haven't seen my old friend Fred (who
you've met) in a while, and am gonna stay at his new place, near LAX.

I think I'm gonna drive down on the 25th, but with tix for Kimock and
David Nelson, have to leave early on the 27th to get back here by 9PM.

Sounds like you're pretty busy, so if not in SoCal, I'll look forward to

The reason I am against the death penalty is that I don't want to give
the government that power. A government that regularly screws up my
drivers license is not ready for it. Just look at the recent cases where
DNA proved 30 people in Suffolk county innocent after 7-10 years in
jail. Maybe a "victims visiting day" every year for the real psychos,
but I would never vote for the death penalty.

What kind of bike? and where do you ride?

Most of our rides lately are around NYC and down to the Jersey Shore,
there were hundreds of bikes at the Allmans shows at the PNC and Beacon.

Well, neither David Nelson nor the people who run the Avalon, have a
watch, so chances are it won't start at 9. Never has; probably never
will.

Avalon from Nob Hill? 5 minutes by cab. Maybe 4...

It's $25 for both David Nelson & Friends, and the headliner Steve Kimock
Band.

A nice place to see a show. Vegas nightclub horseshoe style room with
two tiers of tables and then a larger bar area in back. Two drink
minimum, good sound. Maitre'd works on tips for the better tables. If
the show is sold out or fairly full, make a dinner reservation for the
best seats. Is this Arthur Lee and a pickup band?

I have an '00 Harley Road Glide full dresser, and my wife rides a
Sportster. We mostly ride in southern CA, but take lots of trips up
the coast to SF and beyond. Last summer we took eight weeks off and
rode a rough loop around the country, following part of the tour, saw
the Dead in Tennassee, (Bonnaroo) twice in in New Jersey, then in New
York, then back for one more show in CA. Along the way we hit 35
states and covered 12,000 miles. Fantastic trip!
Ever get to CA?

I have a 96 Dyna now, its comfortable for a few hundred miles. Last time
I was on the west coast was before the wife and baby, 8 years or so.
Before that my favorite ride was from LA to Vegas when summer tour
kicked off. I borrowed a bike in Co. (3 years ago) when I saw the 75
mph speed limit and made a trip up to Boulder to see the Crash Test
Dummies and Donna the Buffalo.

Nowadays most of my trips are around NY and down to the Jersey shore, a
few toy runs and day trips out of my local bar. I went to 2 of the
Gathering of the Vibes (then came back here to read about how bikers
ruined the event) those were good trips, brought a tent and cash didn't
need a thing all weekend.

Your wife must be tough as nails to make go cross country on a
Sportster, more power to her.

Thanks for the tip. I noticed that the venue was called a "supper
club" and that dinner was available, so I guess that's the way to go. Is
the food any good?

It's my understanding that "Love" is Baby Lemonade and strings. This is
one of the "Forever Changes" shows.

I was really surprised to see online that this has already played in 60
cities, and that Arthur is taking it back to Europe for a couple of
months.

I guess that means that anti-psychotic medications are better now than in
the 70s.

Seriously though...Forever Changes has been one of my favorites for 35
years, and the opportunity to hear it live is just too compelling. Some
things are worth traveling 1000 miles for...

Even if it means a trip to Orange County. Yikes. A trip to the belly of

Nope, that would be Joe's way of looking at it. I'm wondering how come
some of the few people Joe doesn't immediately dismiss as RWNDH never ever

Well, imagine what it's like for someone who remembers driving
through Orange County, and all that was there was mile after mile of
orange groves?

IMHO, Orange County is the best representative of "The American

Not to come to the defense of LA traffic. But it is a fact that most of the
imports for the US come into LA. That means all the trucks that contribute to
the traffic nightmare is all the fault of you all who buy shit at Walmart and
Best Buy. Perhaps they should have a tax on any goods leaving Socal and headed
for points east and north. Hmm,how about a tasting party lunch at the border of

This is gonna be a quick trip, leaving here the 25th and returning the

now, now...I lived in L.A. for over 12 years before moving to Orange County
in February...you wanna talk scary freeways? Try the 5 through downtown
L.A. into South Central...not only does it take an hour to go 15 miles, but
you're also looking for the guy that might pull out a gun and take
potshots...surrounded by people who are paying WAY more attention to their
cell phones than what traffic might be around them. Heck, even the 405 is
relatively civil down here in O.C.

I used to think I'd never want to live in Orange County. It definitely
leans toward the Republican side of things (though not radically), and there
are some noticeable "class" differentiations (socioeconomic, ethnic) which
isn't to my liking, but it's also a fairly clean area, tending toward gentle
in spirit, with a thousand stores and restaurants (and a couple major theme
parks). It definitely ain't L.A. or San Francisco...but it ain't so bad,
either :)

I lived in the ol' OC for about a year all told (mostly for surfing
reasons), and the thing that I hated most about it was the lack of
community in any of the places that weren't beach towns. Newport and
Huntington and Laguna all have central meeting spots and fairly
friendly locals, but everything inland, Santa Ana, Orange, god know
what else, is just a stack of tract-housing projects mixed in with
these goddman gated communities that spring up like roaches in a dirty
bathroom.

That being said, the Galaxy is a nice place to see a show, and Orange
County traffic is downright pleasant compared to the 405 through the
valley or the 5 or the 101 or the 10 or the 110 or the... man, that
headache is coming back...

Jerry's is good, a little overpriced. The bakery makes it all
worthwhile, IMO. If you're going to the Jerry's in the Costa

35 percent of the nations imports come through LA? I would think that adds a

For some reason, I was under the impression that you'd been a fan for
decades. If that's not the case, glad to hear that I was able to turn you

Hey thanks. Great news. I'm seeing him Friday in SoCal, and will be back
home in time to score GAMH tix. What a great place that'll be to see
them. Hope it's Forever Changes w/strings and horns.

Glad I checked rmgd. Home sweet home.

YES!

From the GAMH web site:

Love with Arthur Lee
"The Forever Changes Concert"

Y'know, I checked online a week ago to see if they'd be playing SF, and
they weren't, so I just kinda decided to go to LA to see them. Why not?
Tickets bought, plans made, and then the SF date is announced.

I've been telling the flower girls that one of the things I want/need to
learn from my wildflower restoration project is patience.

Another thing I've been saying for decades: Everyone comes to San
Francisco.

Sheesh. Oh well, if anything's worth doing, it's certainly worth doing
twice. Plus, I've waited 35 years for this...

So, thanks again for the new news!

What songs did he do that I might know? Did any of his songs get radio
play? I've never heard of him though I've heard of Alvin Lee and 10 Years
After (who never did much to me).
