I'm posting here as a last resort. I'm not some net noob who doesn't
know to do some research on his own first, I have... just please hear
me out >8)

Having been away from flight sims for a long time, and I mean a LONG
time... the last sim I played was Sid Meier's F-15 Strike Eagle II
from 1989... and on a 386 with no flight stick either... phew... I
decided to take a peek and see what was new in the sim world lately,
due to the fact that I'm almost done building a new P4 2.4ghz rig. I
did a little poking around the net and found a LOT of people talking
about IL-2 Sturmovik, so I downloaded the demo to play around with.
Now, keep in mind I have never seen the full game or the new IL-2:FB
that's out (it is out now, right?), yet this "little" demo is
single-handedly responsible for turning me into a full-fledged WWII
Flight Fanatic. I'm having WAY too much fun with it, and I really
can't wait to finish building my new machine so I can run out and buy
both IL-2 & IL-2:FB and start playing. I know there are other sims out
there, but I think these two would keep me quite happy for a long
time... But here's my problem...

I don't know how to fly very well. I'm sort of groping in the dark,
you know? I understand the very basic operation of the planes (rudder,
trim, ailerons), but I'm having a tough time finding information on
HOW to perform some basic flight maneuvers. Take a Split-S or an
Immelman, for example. For the most part, I know what these two moves
basically are, and I've seen diagrams on them and such... but, I'm
having trouble finding a FAQ or tutorial on what I should physically
be doing with my stick to actually perform these maneuvers properly.
Is there some web site or book where it will tell me, "To perform
maneuver X, get to X speed and X altitude, then pull back on the stick
while applying up ailerons, flaps and full right rudder, and..." as
you can see I'm just making this up, but I think you understand. I
need some sort of reference for the fundamentals that I suppose are
already very obvious to the seasoned pilots out there.

Here are some sites I've been reading through. They've been very
helpful and are full of information on the stuff on would eventually
like to be doing, but seem to assume that you already know the basics.
Are there any similar places I can go to find information on the
things that I should learn first?

And, I know the BF109 seems to be the plane of choice out there,
but... am I nuts for falling in love with the P-39? It's a tough plane
for a rookie like me to keep in the air even with no enemy in site,
let alone in combat, but... I just dig that plane! Nice Guns >8)

Check out GreaterGreen.com. Sammie's listed info, books to read,
sites to visit and the like. As for the P-39, there are some pilots
who are quite deadly with it. The plane of choice? It varies, but
in our squadron (GhostRiders) most of us fly the Yak3, you might try
it out, it's one of the easiest handling, maneuverable planes
available. When yu get set up, come and visit the GR142 server which
you can find thru Ubi. Tell them Haukeye sent you. ;)

I agree with you, I prefer the P-39 myself, and so do many of my online
friends in this game. One comment though, there is no point buying both
IL-2 and IL-2FB, everything in IL-2 is in the new FB, so just buy that.

Hope to see you in the digital skies soon (you are going to fly online, I
hope?)
