There is currently showing on British TV an advertisement
for Carlsberg Lager which shows an extract from the old
movie "Ice Cold in Alex", in which John Mills, Anthony
Quayle, and Sylvia Syms, having trekked across the
Western Desert, are lined up behind a bar in Alexandria;
John Mills savours the moment before downing the beer.
I remember the movie, the title refers to this moment,
which the team hold before them as a sort of Holy Grail
to inspire them in their epic journey - but was it really
Carlsberg, or am I watching a very clever piece of image
processing?
Incidentally, I learn that Syms is making a reappearance
as Margaret Thatcher in a "faction" recreation of the
events leading up to Thatcher's resignation, to be shown
shortly on Independent TV.
I also learn that MT is to be elevated to the peerage shortly.

This is the actual footage (I have it on video), and I believe in some
versions of the ad, a caption says as much. Carlsberg did the ad because
Holsten Pils were using footage from the same film for one of those
Griff Rhys Jones (sp?) ads, and some bright spark at Carlsberg watched
the film closely. Sylvia Syms mentioned this on Wogan, and said that
they couldn't possibly be seen drinking a German lager during the
war!

This is far from certain. When a politician becomes a peer it
is in effect a retirement from serious politics since peers
cannot be MPs, and the House of Lords has no real powers.
Thatcher has yet to indicate whether she will stand down as an
MP at the next election, there are indeed suggestions that she
will carry on under the delusion that the Conservative Party
will ask her back to be leader. Remember that Edward Heath, the
Conservative leader whom Thatcher overthrew, is still an MP
sixteen years later and was never reconciled to Thatcher's
leadership.

If the Tories lose the next election, it is guaranteed that
there will be a large campaign mounted by the Thatcherites
to bring back the leader "who never lost us an election".

There is no way she will allow herself to be booted upstairs
until after that.
Bob.

In fact she has announced she will not be standing at the next
general election. She has not resigned her seat. Had she done
so there would be a by-election in Finchley.

Oops.. Matthew is, of coarse, quite correct. But, in the traditions
of the Thatcherite press, why let the facts get in the way of a good
story!! :-)

Dave Kennard.
