Hi,
I've posted a fulled version of the ms-dos compatibilit mode problem I've
been experiencing with my hard drive, though I don't know if or when it
will show up here...

At this point, I think I've traced the problem I've been experiencing to
the Esdi_506.pdr protected mode driver...Bootlog.txt shows the following
message:

000B31FD Initing Esdi_506. pdr
000B3209 Init success esdi_506.pdr
000B3209 Initing Esdi_506.pdr
000B30B Init failure Esdi506.pdr

After finding this KB article
(http://www.microsoft.com/kb/articles/q150/0/56.htm) "Version Conflict
Adding Components or Reinstalling Windows95," I believe I now understand
what went wrong. The ms-dos compat mode problem was indeed precipitated by
running win95 setup from the CD supplied with the machine (win95 was
preinstalled). This is win95 ver a, so the service pack has been
installed---I'm assuming it's the version on the CD too.

Now, maybe it's just me, but I find these KB articles a little difficult to
understand. But if I'm getting this right, when I told setup to keep the
'newer' version of the file (this dialog came up several times during
setup...I'm assuming one of those times involved esdi_506.pdr) this is what
screwed things up? So what I need to do is go ahead and extract the proper
version of the file into the IOSUBSYS directory to put things right again?

According to another KB article, this file should be located in the
Win95_05.cab file. It should be dated 7/11/95, and it should be 23.758K.
The esdi_506.pdr file currently in my IOSUBSYS directory is dated 12/31/95,
and is exactly 24K in size (though I may have explorer set to round off
file sizes?).

OK, how do I extract the proper cab file, and from where? I have the cab
files on the CD, I also have them in the C:\windows\options\cab directory.

Thanks for any help!
Mickey
