Well, I am close to pulling the trigger on the big purchase
of one of the new Silverado's.

I am going for the Z71 ext cab.

Anyone have any last words of caution before I make this
purchase?

Also, I am curious to know if anyone has experiences with the
new bed lining's that are available these days?

Are they durable and reliable enough to stand up under long
term abuse?

Thanks.

I assume that you are talking about a sprayed in liner Don, because I could
not imagine anyone droping that kind of cash for a truck then putting a
cheezy bedliner in the bed.

I have had Rhino ® liners in both my '95 K1500 and my '99 Silverado. The
only time I managed to damage the liner was when I helped a buddy of mine
move an old refrigerator with metal feet. One of the feet were missing and
the sharp piece of metal still there cut into the liner a bit. It did not
cut down to the metal thou, so I didn't worry about it.

There are several different brands of spray on liners out there now, so I
would talk to someone who specializes in each. I understand that, for
instance, the Rhino ® liners are a of a little softer compound, so they will
give a little when a heavy object is dropped and tend to be a little tackier
while other liners will chip and are a little slicker. It all depends on
what you are looking for.

Do you go off-road or drive on snow a lot? If not why spend extra money for
the Z71? Unless one does a lot of off-roading, I have never figured out why
people want the 4X drive. It's your money and power to you. Just curious.

I've never had a sprayed in liner and don't want one. I've had both the bed
rubber mat and the plastic type liners. Don't care for either one. Trash
and dirt, etc. gets underneath them. I figure that things you put in the
bed won't hurt the bed. So if it puts a scratch in the bed????......that
sure won't hurt anything other than cosmetically.

Good luck to you on your new truck. What engine do you plan to get and are
you getting the 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton? If I were doing it over, I would save
my money and get the 3/4 ton with the 6.0L engine or possibly wait until
Chevy comes out next year with a new design diesel engine in the 3/4 ton.

Take care.

I live in Rochester, MN and see the "occasional" snow storm, that with the
trip up for Bear hunting, fishing, deer hunting, ice fishing etc, I think
that I
will be able to put it to a reasonable amount of use. There are lots of fire
roads up in the northern part of the state so I will be able to put it to
good
use.

I have a bed liner in my S10 and I hear the stories about rubbing etc.
however
it is real hard to see them unless you remove the line IMHO. The one
thing I do not like about the liner is that items in the bed tend to move
around, however put rock and fire wood and mulch etc. into the bed
does not cause any concern and it is real easy to clean up after.

I plan on getting the 1/2 ton with the 5.3 liter engine. After moving up
from
the s10 I am certain that I will be more than happy with the amount of
power that is available. All of the rags that I have read to date have really
raved about the new motors, so I feel comfortable that I will be ok, unless
there is a really good deal on the 3/4 ton with the 6.0, then I will have to
do some serious considerations.

If the kids would stop growing for a year, I could probably wait for another
year, but they continue to eat and grow for some reason.

Thanks for the thoughts/opinions.

Does anyone know any news about the new Diesel engine that is supposed
to be enterduced
next year? I have heard rumors that it may be an ISUZU or CAT engine for
the 2500 series. If anyone knows
better can you please le me know? Thanks!

Don: You most assuredly will get use out of the 4X in that part of the
U.S.A. I have the 5.3 in my 2X but I have the 3.42 rearend which is lacking
by a long shot. If hindsight was possible we would never make a mistake,
would we? Next time, I'll get the 4.10 ratio or the 3.73 at the least.
Probably the truck may get better gas mileage with the 3.73 than with the
3.42 since it will probably provide for the best power curve of the engine.
I had a '95 with the 5.7 and I can't really tell if the 5.3 is quicker or
not. In pickups I think speed is sorta a mute point. If one buys a pickup
for speed they have chosen the wrong vehicle. Buy a suped up Vette or
whatever.

I've had the bed liners and won't own another one. If I possibly did change
my mind it would be the rubber mat type and not the thick mat either. The
thick mat is tougher but is heavy as heck to remove to clean under it.

I know you'll enjoy your new truck. I plan to get a diesel in my next
pickup.....I haven't BEEN THERE DONE THAT yet so will have to see how they
are. I know one thing: the Dodge diesel is one strong engine and will run
like a zebra and pull a freight train. I don't see how they get that much
power/torque out of an inline six.

Good pickuping to you.

Thanks for the insight and good advice.

Will let you know what I turn up with.

Since the subject turned to diesel my dad picked up one
of the f350's with the new power stroke when the first came
out and man does that thing go.

His was the 4x4 with offroad package and he swears he
was getting 18-20miles per gallon in that monster.

The times that I rode in it, it just seemed like very little
effort was required to get it to 70 and just go!

Good pickuping to you as well.

Spoken like a true salesperson. I plunked that kind of cash down for my truck and can't imagine putting a cheesy bedliner like yours in my truck!

C ya.

Thanks for the input guys. I am going to do the spray in on the truck, I
guess
that I was curious to know what, if any, problems or gotcha might be
associated
with the new kind of liner.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

Personally, I have been impressed with the Armorthane stuff - it seems to
have some "give" to it that the other guys don't. Check out the competitors
to see for yourself. Just my $ 0.02.

As for Spray in liners, there are two main types that I have seen. One is
more rubber, the other is more of a hard plastic. I have seen 3, yes 3,
different trucks where the plastic type peeled up. I have not seen any
troubles with the rubber type.

Good luck!

Yes, most people never really need 4-wheel drive. I have a 99 Z71 with the
optional Autotrac. I live where it rains alot. The autotrac is awesome in
the rain!! If you live where there are rainy, or icy condition, I highly
recomend the Autotrac.

Also, if you do get a 4x4, make sure you spend the extra $170 for the
locking differential. It's not a true 4x4 with out a locking differential.

Good luck!!!

First off, Bowlingball, I am not a sales person, nor will I ever be.  The original post of the thread was asking about bedliners, so I responded with my experience.  IMHO, if you are gonna throw $25K to $30K or more down on a vehicle, why put something in the bed that is going to rattle, collect moisture, and increase the chances of rusting the bed of your truck?  Not only that, but then you have to put a rubber mat on top of the liner to keep crap from sliding around in the back.  I have had both types of liners, and the standard liner warped within a year.  This is not an uncommon experience, and I can walk into the parking lot at work and see 3 or 4 trucks with over the rail liners that are warping from the heat.  Definately something I want to put on my investment.
